Adeline gritted her teeth. This guy seemed awfully cocky, although it didn't take him long to recognize who had made her this way in the first place. "Then you'll know that I shouldn't be messed with," she said, magic power coiling around her arms like snakes. "A piece of an ancient demon merged with the skill of a smart witch? I'm a magic powerhouse." Even as Adeline spoke, she could feel her magic rising, bubbling. It wouldn't be much longer 'til it boiled over.

"Don't think for a moment you can take on the elder of demons just because you carry one within you."
His voice was soft, silky, and yet the warning within the tones was quite real. Adeline's witch blood combined with the demon inside of her would make it extremely difficult for most Others to even harm her, but demons were different. And while she could easily handle the younger ones that prowled Bellerouge like muggers and rapists, the older ones would quickly prove to her that arrogance came with a high price. Because demon or no, she was still a Mortal.

The demon in Adeline almost relished the challenge. Taking on an elder demon in a fight? It sounded like fun. But the other part of her, the good side, was freaking out majorly. An elder demon? It didn't matter if she went totally berserk. This guy could probably take her down quickly. Maybe Thrax could stand up to him, but Thrax wasn't here. There was just a piece of him stuck inside a frightened teenager. The war inside her head made her magic flicker, like a light bulb that was struggling to stay lit. Her teeth gnashed together, both sides struggling to make themselves heard.
"Don't you dare."
"Why not? It'll be fun. We haven't had a go at anyone for ages."
"I said no!"
Adeline gave a moan, both hands clutching her head as she took half a step back. She didn't want to fight anyone, but she couldn't get this bad side of her under control. Her magic power was already crackling and popping like a firecracker. She just worried about what would happen if it reached the equivalent of an explosion.

Pitch watched Adeline's internal conflict with no expression whatsoever on his face. Even as he stood in front of the young woman, he could feel the magical energy coming off of her in waves and knew that the situation in which she had placed herself was extremely dangerous. Even if only a piece of a demon's essence lay inside her, there was no doubt that said demon's plans for her were malicious and posed a substantial threat to the citizens of Bellerouge.
Before that moment he had only been somewhat interested in the circumstances surrounding the witch, but now he knew it would require his intervention to stop this from growing into a serious problem. A demon and witch's magic combined? Things could get very bad very quickly.
"If you wish to win this struggle, you must regain your focus and calm your mind."
Pitch spoke suddenly to Adeline as rain fell down over both of them, offering advice to the young witch.

Pitch's voice seemed to cut through whatever fear Adeline was thinking. It was enough to distract her demon side for a moment, and that gave her the perfect opportunity to rein it in. She could feel her magic power settling down, slowly coming under her control again. When she looked up next, her eyes were back to normal, although her legs did feel a little unsteady. This whole thing was taking a lot out of her. "How did you do that?" she asked, looking at Pitch. "How did you know what to say? Who are you?" This guy was sort of baffling to Adeline. He was a demon, and very sure of himself, but he didn't want to take advantage of her. A good demon almost sounded like an oxymoron, but that was what Pitch seemed to be.

"I am Pitchiner Kozmotis Black, Demon of Shadows and member of the Bellerouge Police Department Others Unit."
The words seemed to fill the silence of the graveyard, reverberating with a kind of secretive energy that was powerful nonetheless. His yellow eyes continued to start at Adeline, seemed to stare into her eyes and down into the very core of who she was and what lurked there, both the good and the bad.

Adeline blinked. A demon...police officer? It was unheard of, to her at least. But it certainly explained why he wasn't as vicious as she had expected. Maybe there were some good demons around here after all. "Can you help me? Do you know how to control this...demon part of me?" she asked. "I don't want to hurt anyone again and I'm just tired of...everything." It was vague, but Adeline felt like it was an accurate way of describing how she felt. She was tired of feeling alone, tired of her parents walking on eggshells around her, tired of having no friends. Adeline knew there was no way she would ever be "normal" but she would like to try and get close to it.

It seemed as though Pitch might not answer her plead for help at all and merely fade back into the shadows, disappearing completely into the depths of darkness that surrounded them even now and leaving Adeline with nothing.
He considered her for a long moment and thought over all the reasons he should not help the young girl. He was busy aiding Bellerouge through the Others Unit, Moses had already asked for assistance in dealing with his demonic parent, he rarely had the time to do much outside of his work and preferred it that way, the more people he helped the more difficult it would become to keep his past concealed. All these reasons ran through his mind as he looked into the girl's violet eyes, and yet.....
"It is not so simple as to control this part that lives inside of you."
He spoke softly, almost a whisper as he slowly crossed his arms in front of his chest. He was well aware of the burden this would place on him and how he could was in so way indebted to this woman. And yet he continued to speak with her, unable to stop himself it seemed from getting involved once more in something that didn't concern him.
"Each demon is unique and possessed of certain abilities. This Thrax, I recognize the name but have met him only once before and have no way of knowing what his skills are capable of. However, just as each human differs from the other in some ways, so do they have far more in common."
Finally Pitch moved from his spot beside the mossy tombstones and dank mausoleum. He strolled slowly forward until he stood directly in front of Adeline, so close his dark energy seemed to seep around her.
"If I do this for you, I must ask you one thing."
His tone was still soft, but the message was clear nonetheless; her answer would determine if he would help her or not.
"What are you willing to sacrifice?"

Pitch was quiet for a very long time. Adeline wasn't sure if he had heard him. When he spoke though, he seemed willing to help her, and that made her happy. She wondered if Thrax had ever met Pitch. They hadn't exactly talked about that sort of thing when they had met. However, it seemed like there was a price to pay for Pitch's help, something she had to give up on her end. "What do you want?" she asked. Typically, people wanted money in situations like these, but Adeline doubted that was what Pitch was after.

Pitch didn't pause this time in answering Adeline's question.
"What are you willing to give up to remove this demon from you? What are you willing to lose so that your soul and yours alone will reside in your body? What are you willing to do to be freed from Thrax?"
He wasn't in this for personal gain, although he knew that Adeline might come in useful at a later time and for certain things. No, the biggest reason he was willing to help her was because it was expected of him. That might not have amounted to much, be he had made a promise long ago and he was a demon to always keep his promises, no matter what.
However, a small part, a part he didn't even want to acknowledge, wanted to help because.....well, because he wanted to. He buried that part of himself quickly and tried to overlook it, but sometimes he couldn't help worrying about that little voice. Demons didn't feel such things as empathy or altruism, and yet that little part of him....

Adeline bit her lip. "Anything" was probably the answer Pitch was looking for, but Adeline wasn't sure how much of "anything" she had left. She had no friends. She lived with constant regret. Her parents were really all she had, but even then, she sometimes felt like they were scared of her. Maybe she didn't have much to lose if she decided to do this. "Whatever it takes," she replied. "Honestly, I don't have many people left that actually care about me. And even then, they worry about me constantly. If this will at least put them at ease...then I want to do it."

"Good."
Pitch reached into the plunging collar of his black robe and pulled out something before handing it over to Adeline. It was a card, but it was unlike any card one would normally see. It was a complete and universal black with no decoration or it seemed any writing. However, as he handed it to Adeline he slanted the card every so slightly so that a sudden flash of gold appeared along with words.
Pitchiner Kozmotis Black.
"When the time comes, tear this card in two and toss it into the shadows. Then we shall begin."

Adeline looked at the card curiously for a moment. There didn't seem to be anything remarkable about it. But soon enough, his name appeared in golden letters. Well, that's certainly a unique business card, she thought. She nodded in response to Pitch's instructions. "Thank you," she said. And she did mean it. Pitch was still shrouded in mystery, but the important thing was that he was willing to help her. It helped her feel a little more at ease.

He only gave the smallest of nods before turning away from Adeline and strolling back to the mausoleum. The shadows seemed to fall behind him and trail his feet, almost like a loyal dog that refused to venture further than arms length from its master.
In the next instant, Pitch was swallowed up by the shadows of the graveyard, leaving behind nothing to show that he had even been there, nothing except the card that Adeline now held in her hand.
Pitch had offered his assistance, but it would have to be her choice before he aided her.

Adeline was startled to suddenly Pitch disappear, seemingly swallowed up by shadows. But maybe that was a typical exit for him. The shadows almost seemed loyal to him, like a pet. The more she thought about it, the more it fascinated her. Pitch was an almost stereotypical dark creature, yet he chose to serve good. That gave Adeline a bit of hope. By now, she figured that this demon part of her would always stay, no matter what she did. But, maybe she could still good things, even if she always had to carry it around. That thought made her smile a little bit as she tucked the card into her pocket and walked off.
