"No."
Pitch said this with the suddenness of someone who has only been slightly interested and had now become completely bored. It seemed almost like a dismissal even though his intentions weren't as such. The demon merely had other things to occupy his mind and, now that he had learned what he wanted from Elsa, no longer really felt any need to engage her in conversation.
He turned back towards the river once more, his gaze focused somewhere on the distant shore across the way. Elsa might as well not have even been standing next to him.

"Good. Then I don't have to bore you with pointless stories you know are true."
The iciness was still present in Elsa's reply, but it was thawing. It was because, well, Pitch did understand the whole 'magic with a price' thing her family had gone through the centuries learning. She didn't want to judge, especially given he was an officer and not a member of the Lao - who had been uncharacterisically quiet after the Black War had 'ended', the most you heard of them wax through Ombres - but he had been involved with dealings where people traded the craziest of bargains; souls.
"Anyways," she watched a magnolia petal float lazily by the river.

Pitch continued to look across the river but was aware that Elsa hadn't moved away despite his abrupt end to the conversation. She continued to stand close by, the only person that had come near him despite the large number of individuals passing by. He also had the idea that Elsa wanted to ask him something but was being polite, waiting.
After standing this way for several minutes, watching the magnolia blossoms fall into the river and listening to the babble of people walking by, he finally spoke once again.
"You answered my questions of you, I suppose you have questions of me you would like to ask?"

"The questions I have won't be answered by you, because you won't. That and," she shrugged, "they would cost me my job."
Invasion of a personal questioning without a judge on standby was against court marshall law. If she said anyything, it would have been big trouble. Harvey had been expelled from the court for doing that, and, well, was not seen again.
"I guess the one question I can ask without being too prodding is...have you selected a partner?"

Pitch raised an eyebrow at Elsa's comment, all too aware of the recent expulsion of the lawyer Harvey Dent from practice and the crackdown that had followed in its wake. And while prosecutors, defendants and lawyers worked closely with the BPD, there could be no crossing the line between their job and personal lives. It really wasn't surprising that Elsa was so cautious even speaking out in the open like this to him.
However, it appeared there was one question she had for the demon. A partner at the BPD for him.
Pitch felt a flicker of annoyance but kept his posture relaxed and his expression calm. He'd received the announcement from the department head of the BPD only last week. Apparently the department felt it was time that he be partnered with another detective, someone who could back him up on cases and help with the ever increasing workload that was flooding the BPD......and also watch him.
It annoyed the demon to no end that they were trying to saddle him with someone even when his work performance as a solo detective was spotless.
"No, I haven't. Needless to say I find the prospect of a partner unnecessary and cumbersome."

Elsa nodded. Typical of Pitch to shrug off any socialization. Shadow Griffiths has been in the same position, confident in his skills and not wanting to be saddled with anyone. And yet, two years later, he was with a wide eyed baker and would do anything to keep her safe.
"Fair enough. Although, if I recall, some fiery personality was very interested in working with you."
She had witnessed Esmeralda's immediate gravitation to the demon. The attempt to make small talk only for it to be shot down.

"I take it you are speaking of Detective Esmeralda."
Even though Pitch had made it abundantly clear that he didn't want to have a partner and most of the detectives in the Others Unit knew this, Esmeralda had been coming around him with more and more frequency, trying to engage in small talk and learn more about him. He couldn't help but wonder if he had given her the wrong impression when he had agreed to help her learn to control her fire abilities. It wasn't that he even disliked her exactly, more that he simply preferred working alone.
"She is a very passionate young woman, gifted and driven in her work. However, our differences would most likely make any partnership strained."

"Every bubbly Sunshine needs a stoic Shadow," Elsa argued. The duo in the police department were the exact opposite of each other. Maybe that was what made them such a strong team. It seemed childish pointing to them as an example, but it would avoid beating a dead horse.
"I'm not asking you to become friends with her. Give it something to think about." She frowned at the beeping of her phone. Late for something. At least she had a somewhat interesting conversation. "I'll see you around."

"Perhaps."
Pitch didn't look at Elsa as he spoke but continued to look across the river, his arms folded behind his back. However, the smallest of frowns had appeared on his brow at Elsa's comparison to the duo that was Shadow and Sunshine. A moment later, Elsa's phone began to beep and she quickly made a hasty farewell. Clearly she had somewhere else she needed to go.
"Good day, Elsa."
Pitch looked at her for a brief moment and offered an even briefer bow before once more looking across the river before him. He knew that sooner or later, more likely sooner, Elsa would come into the BPD.

Elsa nodded at the low bow Pitch offered her. It wasn't anything she hadn't seen before; some Others were far more courteous than others. As he turned away, she could finally walk freely, rushing down the side of the riverbank away from a frigidness even she couldn't handle. ((end thread))
