Elsa took a bigger bite of her cupcake. Crumbs rained from the wrapper, along with several of the star sprinkles. Was there an anti demon group with their hands on something unusual? Was it an adaptation of Sapien? No, that wasn't right; Anna said the. blood work showed no traces of being exactly human.
The lawyer gave a reassuring smile to the forensics examiner. When she got thoughtful, it was a sign there was a brain beneath her childish antics. Yes, she gave officers rubber ducks as souvenirs for a job well done, but she also could tell if a bit-and-run was staged or unstaged. She hid cupcakes in a morgue fridge, but vould recite the components for a Weird Sister poison.
"You'll figure it out, Anna. You always do."

Anna suddenly straightened up and turned to stare at Elsa, her eyes blinking rapidly in surprise. She wasn't used to getting encouragement and compliments at the BPD. Most of that had to do with the fact that she spent most of her time with the dead, but she also knew part of it had to do with her quirks. She knew she could come across as childish and annoying at times and had accepted that most people would only ever see her in that light.
But for Elsa to have complimented her in such a way was something of a pleasant surprise.
"Thanks, Elsa."

Anna looked surprised by Elsa's compliment. Didn't people give her a sign of appreciation when she solved a case? Several officers had said positive things, but the rapid blinking if Anna's aqua eyes said something different,
"I mean it," she reassured the officer. "If it weren't for you, the others unit would be running blind."

"Oh, I don't know about that."
Now Anna could definitely feel a flush of heat climbing her cheeks as she kept her gaze turned towards the tiled floor of the autopsy room, her toe starting to tap out a faster beat and her hands clasped behind her back.
"I really don't do that much in the end. The folks upstairs are the ones who find and arrest the people responsible. I just look at bodies."
With that said, Anna went over to where Hernando was laid out and covered his body completely with the sheet. She then turned the table he rested on and pushed it over to the morgue. In only a few minutes, his body was safely stowed in a unit. She would have to finish her autopsy later once she got the results back on his blood. Also, she very much doubted Elsa would want to stick around to see her fellow lawyer dissected.
"Speaking of, I heard they brought in a few suspects to be interrogated."

Elsa was about to object until the sheet covered Hernando. She blinked blearily, fighting back tears. Only one fell, which turned into a snowflake. It danced around before disappearing into nothing. She would never see his face again, except in photographs. Sadder, the only gift she had now was to give him were rings of flowers.
She briskly brushed back the tears, choosing to ask,
"They got the suspects, you say?"

Anna didn't miss the icy tear that slowly fell down Elsa's face and floated to the floor as a snowflake. She didn't say anything but gave the lawyer a sympathetic look as she walked back over to where she stood. She wanted to say something but wasn't quite sure what comfort she could offer Elsa that wouldn't seem false or forced. Instead, she waited on Elsa, ready to let the woman leave and have her privacy if she needed it or to continue their conversation.
She was somewhat relieved when Elsa asked about the suspects.
"Yeah, they brought them in just today."

"Normally I'd ask who they were but, you know," the laugh she emitted sounded hollow, almost unhumorous. Laughing about a close friend's death was no laughing matter. If it had been Harvey Dent, who had disappeared from Bellerouge altogether, she would have reacted differently. She cleared her throat, trying to get all access phlegm and heavness that gathered to prevent herself from crying to come out.
"I also keeping thinking about the ball. How all that...chaos, and not the type Shadow emits when he gets angered enough...had happened. How Ralph and I got that boy out, and if I hadn't done anything, his leg would have been crushed."

Anna gave a weak smile at Elsa's words but knew that there was little mirth in them. This couldn't be easy for her, no matter how cool and calm of an exterior she put on. However, Anna's sympathy soon gave way to a spike of anxiety when the lawyer began to discuss the chaotic masquerade ball that happened only two weeks ago.
"Yeah, that was a pretty intense party, and not in the good way."
Anna put a hand to her own shoulder where her injury from the ball was still healing. She knew she could have gone to Sunshine and gotten it healed in an instant, but she also knew it wasn't serious and that Sunshine had used a lot of her energy already. No point in overtaxing her when the wound would mend fine on its own.
"Still, I'm glad things weren't worse. If the ceiling had caved in or that demon had tried to force his way out of the mansion, a lot more people could have ended up critically injured."

The weak smile was returned with Elsa's own. "Ypu can say that again," she agreed. That weak smile turned into a frown as Anna winced and grabbed her shoulder. She had been one o the paramedics rushing and making sure people were all right. A shoulder injury was a bad thing for someone who used their arm constantly to have,
"Do you need something for your shoulder?"

"Hmmm?"
Anna hadn't realized she had grabbed her shoulder until Elsa inquired if she needed something for it. She glanced down at her left shoulder where it was clad in the pink forensic coat she wore while doing autopsies.
"Oh, I'm find. It was just a shallow puncture resulting in a moderate contusion of the deltoid muscle. Nothing serious."
She said all of this as if it were the most straight-forward and obvious thing in the world before addressing Elsa again.
"How about yourself? You weren't hurt in the attack, right?"

Elsa blinked. Medical terminology went right over her head. The only thing she got out of it was something damaged a muscle and that she was unable to use her arm properly. Well, it didn't matter.
"Just don't...overwork."
She tucked a hair from her braid back into place. It had amazed her that she had stood up to a demon and hadn't been touched. She looked down at her hands, which were beginning to chap due to overexposure to the cold. Humidity plus ice powers often resulted in chapping hands.
"The worst damage I had was exhaustion. I saved a young man's life, Ralph helped...well, really I helped, he did most of the work."

"Oh....Ralph."
Anna couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at that and speak in a slightly suggestive tone. She did her best to keep her face perfectly straight but could feel a smile trying to form.
She knew Ralph from the brief time they had worked together at the BPD and although they hadn't gotten to know each other like he knew Shadow, she could still recall the Giant. Really sweet and funny when he wasn't beating up criminals to a bloody pulp.
She also knew that the Giant and Elsa had gone out on a date at least once.
"So..... you guys talk much at the party?"

"Actually, I didn't expect him to be there," Elsa admitted nervously. She hadn't seen Ralph in a while. They had spoken briefly when she eavesdropped on the cops lamenting the La Llorona case, but nothing he aside from that.
"I did want to talk to him. If not at the ball, just..any time. I bear no ill will towards him. I just...want to turn a new leaf, you know what I mean?"

"Uh huh."
Anna said this but her eyes told a different story. She was certain that Elsa and Ralph's relationship was more interesting then she made it out to be, but she didn't push the subject. It wasn't her place to play matchmaker and besides, she doubted Elsa would want to discuss her love life over a cadaver.
"Well, if you head upstairs to the offices, I'm sure someone can give you the information on the suspects brought in."

Elsa looked at Anna quizzically. Of course, there was a trace of what had been hinted at in just the tone of her voice But in the forensics lab didn't seem like the professional venue to talk about the past. She could almost feel Hernando's spirit shaking his head in disapproval as his body rested in the cooling unit. She cleared her throat to cut off the awkward silence.
"Well, thank you, Anna. I'll give them your regards from down under," she said the last two words in an Australian accent, a titter escaping afterwards. She looked back over her shoulder with the door propped before saying, "Also, thank you for taking care of Hernando. And it's true; the Others Unit says amazing things about you." ((end thread))
