The answer was brief, almost curt. It looked like anymore questions Adeline had about Pitch's past would have to wait for another time. She was the focus here, not him. "So...what can I do to keep control of my anger?" she asked. Surely, Pitch had some techniques or something of that sort to help her feel calm when she felt mad.

"First, you must come to understand your anger. Everyone experiences rage and fury, but the cause for it differs for each individual. What enrages one person might not effect the next in the slightest. You must learn about your own before you can attempt to control it."
Suddenly, Pitch turned away from Adeline and began to walk deeper into the graveyard, away from the newer and more modern tombs to the oldest and least visited section of the cemetery. He motioned for the young witch to follow him. It was easy to get lost in the labyrinth of statues, mausoleums and crumbling trails that completely surrounded the clearing they had just stood in.
"Second, you must learn how to calm your mind and body even at the most difficult of times. One cannot stop themselves from ever experiencing frustration or anger, but they can learn to cool it and give it direction. And in so doing, they can remain in complete control of themselves and their actions."
He continued to speak to Adeline even as his long stride led them through the network of graves, his footsteps making no sound even on the stone path.
"And third, you must test yourself, for it is only in facing the challenge placed before you that you learn."

Understanding, control, testing. They almost sounded simple, but Adeline knew they would probably be the opposite for her. She knew that whenever she felt anger, there was no stopping it. It was like a volcano erupting, a river that burst through a dam. It would be challenging, to say the least. And who knew how long it would take. Thrax could show up again at any moment, although if he was smart, he would lie low until long after the ball had left everyone's minds. She followed Pitch deeper and deeper into the cemetery. While some might have found it creepy, Adeline appreciated the solemn mood it gave off. It was a serious place for serious work. And the silence allowed her to think over what Pitch had said.

"However, we must focus on each of the Mortal weaknesses that demons target. You must learn how to detect the ruses and lies of demons, must master your anger so they can not use it against you, and..."
The demon came to a pause before turning back abruptly so that he once more faced Adeline. For a moment, there was almost a hunger in the depths of his yellow eyes. However, a moment later it was gone as if it had never been present.
"You must overcome your fears. This is perhaps the most difficult challenge you will face. Fear is not logical, often it has no reason and it can change a person in ways they would never think possible. If there is one thing Thrax will try to use to bend you to his will, it is fear."

Adeline was startled when Pitch suddenly stopped walking and whirled around to look at her. His eyes were...very intense, to say the least. It almost intimidated her. But she couldn't start getting scared now. Heck, Pitch even mentioned that she had to overcome her fears, and that Thrax would probably use that tactic more than anything else in an effort to get control over her. Of course, like everything else she would have to learn, not being scared of Thrax would be easier said than done. Heck, sometimes, even mentioning his name gave her goosebumps. Regardless of whether she tried to hide her fear or not, she always felt it to some degree. "That might take a while," she said. She knew time was of the essence here, but this definitely wasn't something she was going to learn overnight.

"Adeline. You need not master this skill overnight."
Pitch said her name in a tone of perfect calm, his own posture becoming more relaxed in that instant. He knew that he was telling her a great deal and demanding even more, but he didn't expect her to instantly overcome all the challenges that now faced her. There would be time, even with the threat of Thrax lingering about them.
If the crimson demon were smart, he would lay low for awhile until the heat was off of him. And Pitch planned on using that time to the fullest extent, to teach Adeline at least the basics so that even if she had to face down Thrax again, she would have a way to defend herself.
"Part of the challenge is knowing what you face. Once the unknown is made known, it loses some of its power over us. And know this too..."
Suddenly, Pitch knelt down slightly so that he and Adeline were at the same level, there eyes perfectly matched as the yellow stared into the purple.
"There is nothing wrong with feeling fear as long as it doesn't change the person you are and stop you from doing what is right. That is what it means to be brave."

Pitch pretty much read Adeline's mind when he commented that she didn't need to master this overnight. She figured it wasn't possible anyway. If it were, she might have done it by now. But Pitch surprised her when he suddenly got down on her level and said feeling fear was okay, as long as she still did the right thing and didn't let it change who she was. The idea of being brave seemed almost like a fantasy to her, though. Every time she saw Thrax, all she could do was cower in fear. Heck, even when the other police officers had been fighting him at the ball, all she could do was give advice on his attacks. Other than that, she had just hung back and watched, too scared to do anything. "You think I can be brave?" she asked. Pitch seemed to have high hopes for her. The last thing she wanted to do was disappoint him.

"Yes."
The answer was so quick, so filled with certainty that it even took Pitch by mild surprise. However, he didn't doubt his answer because he knew it was the truth. Adeline might doubt herself, and that was something most people felt when they considered if they were brave or not, but he sensed something in the young witch that was impossible to describe and yet truly powerful.
"You may not see it and perhaps you don't believe it yourself, but there is bravery in you."
Pitch was a Terror Demon, he was a creature that manipulated and fed off of the fears that plagued humans and Others alike and for the longest time he had relished his power and gloried in fear. However, he also knew what it meant to be brave and to face fear even while still feeling it.
And he knew beyond a doubt that courage was hidden somewhere in Adeline. All he had to do was help her find it.
Suddenly, the smallest of smirks pulled up the side of Pitch's mouth at the irony of it all. Not so long ago he had been a terror to the city of Bellerouge, had controlled and manipulated the fears of thousands of people and used it to earn a name that even now people were still afraid to speak. And now he found himself working on the side of the law, aiding and saving those he could and even helping people to overcome their fears.
All because of a promise he had made to a dying young man...
It was almost laughable.

The change in Pitch was noticeable. He was so encouraging now. It was like there was a whole other side of him. Adeline wondered if anybody else had seen it. Maybe a few of the cops had. He had to be somewhat decent to the people he worked with, otherwise he'd have gotten fired by now. Whatever had made Pitch decide to join the police and be a good guy, Adeline was thankful for it. "Thanks," she said, smiling back at him. It was nice, being believed in. Most of the time, the main emotion people felt around her was pity. Or worry.

For a moment there was nothing but the silence of the graveyard as the demon detective looked at the young witch. However, suddenly there came the distant sound of a bell chiming and Pitch's gaze broke away from Adeline as the echoing notes filled the air.
"It appears that our meeting for the day has come to an end."
Pitch rose back to his full height, his black profile darker than any shadow that surrounded them. He might be aiding Adeline in her conflict with Thrax, but he was still a BPD officer and had cases that needed to be dealt with.

The conversation was interrupted by the sound of a bell chime. It looked like their lesson was over for today. But, Pitch had given Adeline a lot to think about. She had quite a bit ahead of her, but she felt more confident that she could overcome it. Maybe she could do some research of her own until they met again. Surely in all the magic books she had, she could find some advice on controlling herself. Granted, they would probably be about managing magic power so it didn't get out of control, but Adeline felt like the same could be applied to her anger. She felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw that she had a text from her mom. "My parents are here," she said, looking out. Sure enough, she could see them in the distance, parked near the entrance of the graveyard. "I guess I'll see you later then?"

"Return to this location at the same time in three days."
The strange certainty and support that the demon had shown towards Adeline was gone now, replaced with the cool distance he always seemed to have about him. He watched her pull out her phone and state that her parents were here to pick her up, but his face was blank once more and showed no interest in this.
"Think over all we have discussed here today and prepare yourself. The real training begins now."
With that, he gave Adeline the smallest of nods before he suddenly took a step back into the shadow of a nearby tree and disappeared, a ghost that had vanished once more into the depths of the graveyard.

Adeline wasn't going to lie, Pitch disappearing into the shadows like that was kind of creepy. Then again, creepiness was just one part of the whole Pitch package. Heck, in a way, she was creepy too. She had part of a demon inside her, after all. Maybe that was why she and Pitch got along so well. But, she would do as he said and prepare herself for their next meeting. Feeling a lot more motivation than before, she was already making plans as she headed towards her parents' car. She'd start off at the library first. That might have some information that could help her. She felt determined now, and she wasn't going to let anything stop her.
