"Good. You're doing good."
His tone remained the same as he continued to speak to Yang, but he could sense now that something had shifted in the woman. Her fear was slowly starting to ebb away and her heartbeat, so frantic only a few moments ago, was beginning to slow down to something normal. Whatever image she had focused on was strong enough to calm her down and he wondered for the briefest of seconds what it could be she was thinking of.
The sirens were getting closer to the scene now, but still a distance off. Suddenly, the shadows under the bridge moved and several of his Nightmares stepped forward, their victim motionless on the back of one.
Emerald was unconscious and had large, hoof-shaped bruises spread across her body. She was swinging softly across the back of the Nightmare at the center of the circle, the others remaining close should the woman try and escape. Her hands, arms and legs were firmly bound with black lengths of darkness that seemed to move like serpents as they encircled the unconscious figure.
The demon didn't even glance at his shadow creatures but gave a small nod of the head, showing that he was pleased with how they had handled the would-be killer.

Yang opened her eyes as two new sounds came in. The first was sirens. They sounded a long way off, but they were steadily getting closer. The second was soft hoof-beats. Pitch's nightmare horses had returned, along with Emerald. It looked like she had put up a fight, but she was out cold now. All Yang could think of was how Cinder was going to react to this. Would she be angry enough to retaliate? Or would she lie low out of fear? She had sounded pretty scared of Pitch when she and the others had spotted him. In a way, it almost reminded Yang of how she acted, after Pitch nearly busted her. Sure, she had been angry at the time, but she had mostly been scared. She hadn't gone back to any kind of underground fighting after that. It almost made Yang wonder why Pitch wanted to help her in the first place. "Why did you help me?" she asked, looking up at him. "Not just now, but...before. You let me go as soon as I mentioned my kids. Why?"

Pitch had continued watching Yang closely, but it was clear enough that she was finally managing to gain some control over her fear. Soon enough, she was able to look at him and truly see him, her violet eyes cleared of all the negative emotions that had clouded them only a short time ago.
The sirens were almost to them now and he was about to turn towards them when Yang suddenly spoke, her voice cutting through the gentle splash of the river on shore. Pitch didn't speak or turn to even look at her now, and instead rose to his feet before slowly walking over to where his Nightmares quietly stood. He looked down at the prone figure of Emerald and it seemed that he would not answer Yang's question. The silence continued to stretch and eventually the flashing blue and red lights of a cop car appeared above them on the bridge and a door could be heard slamming.
Suddenly, Pitch spoke.
"I made a promise to someone."
With that, Pitch jerked his head at the Nightmares and they quickly climbed up the steep bank beneath the bridge, delivering Emerald to the officer who had just arrived. Pitch spoke briefly into his radio, stating that two of the three suspects had escaped but the third had been apprehended and was to be taken into custody by the officer. Once this was done, Pitch silently began to walk along the shoreline of the river, heading towards a section of the bank that wasn't as steep as that next to the bridge.

Pitch didn't answer for a long time. Yang wasn't sure if he hadn't heard her question or was just ignoring it. However, he soon gave his answer, and it only added to her confusion. "What? A promise?" Curiosity got the better of her, and question after question spilled out. "To who? When? Why?" She didn't know why it was so important that she know this, but she felt like it was. For so long, Pitch had been this anonymous being to her, a total mystery. She wasn't going to pass up an opportunity to find out something about him. She slowly, stubbornly, tried to stand. Her legs weren't shaking like before, but she still felt exhausted, as if she had run ten miles without stopping.

Pitch had stopped by the beginning of the bank, waiting on Yang to follow him so that he could deliver her to an ambulance. However, his expression turned completely neutral when Yang began to question him nonstop about his promise. Many people in the BPD knew he had made a promise and it was somehow linked to his turning away from his dark past and joining the force, but there was only one person in all of Bellerouge who knew his full story and the promise he had made. And that was the Commissioner.
Just like his unknown past, he was not going to let anyone know about the conditions of the promise he had made. To do so was unnecessary and also a potential danger.
The demon turned and watched Yang as she shakily approached him, clearly still weak from her ordeal but able to move about on her own without assistance. His words of support and his strong tone of belief in her were no longer present and had been replaced by the distant and slightly sarcastic mask he frequently wore. He had helped Yang in overcoming her fears, but that did not make them friends. Demons simply didn't have friends.

Yang frowned as she walked over to Pitch. It looked like he wasn't going to say anything else about the matter. He was certainly tight-lipped, even more than she was. "Alright, alright, you can keep your secrets for now," she said. She still felt curious though, just like how she wondered who Chat really was. It seemed like everyone here liked to keep who they really were under tight wraps. She could see the ambulance in the distance, which made her stomach squirm slightly. She still had no idea how she was going to pay for any kind of hospital bill. All she could think of was possibly getting a friend to help, although she was reluctant to do that. A hospital bill was different from something like a pizza or a new dress. However, before she left, there was still one more thing she had to do. "You have a phone I can borrow?" she asked, glancing up at Pitch. Her kids would be wondering where she was when she didn't turn up tonight. She needed to get someone to tell them where she was, and that she would be home tomorrow.

Without a word, Pitch reached into the pocket of his black robe and produced a simple cell phone and handed it to Yang. By that point the officers and paramedics had spotted him and Yang and were coming towards them. He walked forward towards them, first turning to the officer and speaking softly.
"Is the suspect taken care of?"
The officer nodded and pointed to his cruiser, where the still unconscious form of Emerald could be seen in the pulsing lights lying on the backseat. Pitch nodded his satisfaction.
"Good. Take her to the station and place her in a holding cell until I get there. She should come out of her stupor soon enough, so be wary of her elemental abilities."
He then turned to face the paramedic who clearly had wanted to go to Yang but also recognized that Pitch wanted to talk with her first.
"The young woman inhaled some water while in the river. Check her over and see if she is at any risk for aspiration or any other life-threatening injuries. If not, treat what she has and release her."
Suddenly, he reached into another pocket and pulled out a small roll of bills before handing them to the paramedic. She blinked at this and shot him a somewhat worried look but relaxed once more when he spoke.
"This is to cover the woman's medical fees. Understood?"
The paramedic nodded before putting the money away and moving over towards Yang, a case of medical supplies in one hand. Pitch watched in silence. He had given the paramedic a large sum that would cover any foreseeable expenses but he wasn't worried in the slightest. While he did use money for certain things, it meant very little to him and often his salary went untouched when he received it. He didn't have to eat nearly as often as a human, didn't have to worry about medical expenses, didn't have to thinking about looking after family. The only thing he paid for with any frequency was the rent on his apartment and that itself wasn't a large amount. He had tasted Yang's brief flash of fear for how she would pay for her treatment, but now she didn't need to worry.
"Miss? You'll need to come with me to the ambulance so that we can examine you."

Yang took the phone and was already dialing a number as Pitch went to talk to an officer. She assumed he was giving them any information they needed regarding her and Emerald. No doubt he was going to have to fill out a long report later. But, she didn't need to worry about that now. The person she had wanted to call had answered his phone. There was only one other person who knew where Yang's hideout was.
"Omar? It's Yang. Look, I need you to not freak out okay? I need you to tell Louie and the others that I won't be home 'til tomorrow. I...got into a little accident and need to stay at the hospital overnight." Yang said the information as matter-of-factly as possible in the hopes of not worrying Omar, but it didn't seem to do any good. She was quiet as Omar ranted for a bit, until she interrupted him with "I didn't do anything. They started it!" She sighed, waiting as Omar asked tons of questions. "No, I don't have any broken bones. I'm not bleeding to death. I just...I was underwater a little too long." She glanced back at Pitch, who was now talking to a paramedic. "Look, I can't explain the whole thing now. Just tell the kids where I am and that I'll be home tomorrow. You can give me a ride, right?" She paused, listening to Omar's reply. "Yeah, hanging out with me until I'm released should be okay, although I have no idea when that'll be." She was quiet again before saying "Thanks Omar. You're the best. I'll see you tomorrow."
She hung up the phone just as the paramedic came over and asked her to come on over to the ambulance. She let out a breath before replying with "Okay," as she walked over. The worst of this whole experience was over. She would be okay at the hospital. She handed Pitch back his phone as she said "Thanks." And she did mean it. Not just for the phone, but for everything else Pitch had done. She wasn't sure if they were exactly on good terms, but she felt like they weren't as bad as the used to be, maybe. Pitch was kind of a hard person to read. Who knew what he was thinking.

Pitch watched as Yang finished her conversation before walking over with the paramedic and handing him back his phone. He pocketed the device as she thanked him but he didn't say anything and merely nodded his head once.
However, as the two women were about to walk away, the demon officer spoke.
"Look after yourself. And know that sometime in the near future I may call upon you to aid in the capture of the remainder of the Elemental Gang. Be wary. This is not over yet."

Yang glanced back as Pitch made one last comment. She wasn't sure how to feel about possibly working with the police in the future. Sure, she'd love to see the Elemental Gang get what they deserved. Mobsters were the types of criminals she hated the most. And she did have some friends on the force. But she was also sure that there were some officers who'd freak out if they saw her again. She'd done everything: punched them in the face, outran them, flirted with them to get out of a sticky situation. Would they want to work with somebody like that? She decided to put aside any worries or questions she had about that, for now at least. She'd cross that bridge when she came to it. That was her main tactic when dealing with unpleasant things: putting them off 'til later. "Right. See ya." She gave a little wave before following the paramedic to the ambulance. She felt okay now, but she knew this night was going to be added to her list of bad memories that were going to keep her up at night. First Thrax, now Cinder. Who was next? She didn't see much of a choice besides just dealing with it as best she could. It was all she was capable of doing, for now.
