Suddenly, Anna let out a snort of laughter as if Axel's words were a funny joke that she had just gotten. She quickly put a hand over her mouth to mute the sound, having learned that most people didn't find snorting very attractive. Once she had gotten her laughter under control, she took the new drink and picked a cherry out of it, rolling the fruit between her fingers as she smiled at the demon bartender.
"I should, considering I work with a demon along with all kinds of Others."
She held out the cherry to Pascal but it seemed that the little chameleon had had his fill, so she popped it into her own mouth.
"And some Gifted Humans, too. It comes with the job description."
With that, she licked her lips clean of cherry juice and positively beamed up at Axel. Demon or not, he certainly knew how to make a mean Hurricane.

She was laughing at him. Not the worst reaction. Still, it was a little odd. If he hadn't already written her off as someone a little peculiar, he might have gotten offended. He would rather spend time around a well behaved customer than one who got plastered. It was less trying on his nerves and his temper. Actually, Anna had caught him on a good day. He normally did not have the patience to deal with patrons, but that was more for the rude ones who demanded alcohol. She was at least relishing the drinks she made.
"Good to hear," he said. "So what do you do that gives you such a wide... social spectrum?"
It was curious - her occupation. She was curious as well, asking a lot of questions, trying to chat up the bartender. Normally he was just a soundboard for sorrows, offering his own advice here and there. But lots of people would talk to the bartender, tell them how bad they had it before drinking themselves into stupidity and bad decisions that they would regret later. Axel had also ordered many a cab ride for those who were too drunk to get themselves home.

"I work as a medical examiner at the Bellerouge Police Department."
She ran her finger around the rim of her glass, producing a simple yet pure note that lasted for a few moments before fading away. Her smile faltered a little as she looked down into the new hurricane she had just received, her mind slipping away for a time back to everything that was happening at the BPD. The Others Unit was preparing for a potential raid on what was believed to be the main site of Grey Dawn and while they were all trained, skilled and had abilities that would make the job far easier to complete, she was still a bit nervous.
She'd examined the bodies at the crime scenes where Grey Dawn had been connected and it worried her, something her bubbly, airheaded personality usually didn't experience.

"What? Really?" Axel asked, mildly surprised.
He would have thought a bubbly girl like her would have been a teacher or a performer. She was cheery enough. It was a little sad a happy-go-lucky girl like her had such a depressing job, but it was the field she chose. No one forced her to take the job or to follow that route. But then again, he didn't have any rights to judge. He was a fire demon working at a bar. She could do whatever she wanted to do. It was how well she did the work that would set her apart from others. However, there was a sort of somberness that struck her as she spoke about her work. He had a feeling not all was okay in paradise. This might turn out to be one of his usual hashing sessions once she got tipsy enough.
"I take it there was a rough day at work," Axel mused once her disposition soured.

"Not really. At least not on my end."
She fished another cherry out of her drink and stared at it thoughtfully for several moments of silence. Finally she nibbled at the fruit before finishing it and placing the stem on her napkin. She lightly swung her legs back and forth as she sat on the stool and looked at Axel.
"We just have a lot happening is all. And besides, most of the folks who I see aren't exactly in a rush."

"So are you in you in here to drink things away or just a drink for the night?" Axel asked.
He could always pull out the harder liquors for her at her request. A hurricane that would truly blow her away, or just straight if she took it that way. Though he was still trying to decide if her 'hurricane' was just the flavor of the night or her regular order. If she was looking to get drunk and perk up, he could help. And since she had stuck around for a bit, he wouldn't be the least bit annoyed if he had to call her a cab home to make sure she got home safe. As a demon, he knew dark things lurked at night.
"We looking for a 'worshipping-the-porcelien-god-at-3-am'? Or perhaps you're more into the 'dear-lord-what-did-I-do-last-night' variety?"

"Just a pick me up."
With that, Anna finished off her second Hurricane and put the glass on the counter, smiling warmly up at Axel even if she was a bit anxious over the upcoming drug raid. Her worries would probably amount to nothing in the end and she would get to here about it all from Aqua or Sunshine or the Colts brothers the next day.
"Besides, I'm not really into toilet worship or self-inflicted misery. Two is my lucky number tonight and I'm gonna stick with it."
She nodded her head as Pascal moved up her arm to rest on her shoulder before nodding his own head in time with Anna's. With that said, she began to dig around in her purse for her change bag so that she could pay for her drinks, but she wasn't in a rush to leave. Now that she had had her fill of alcohol, she could focus on learning more about the demon bartender.
"So what predestined meeting or chance of fate made you decide to take up bartending? I've never run into a demon who mixes drinks for the public and I know everyone in this city."
It was an exaggeration, but not much of one. Anna rarely met a stranger and usually got to know anyone she ran into, even if she wasn't likely to ever see the person again.

"Of course! It is a magic number after all. Best not to push it." Axel said.
He would respect her drink limit. At least she kept true to hers. Some people just loved pushing their luck. Anna was just full of surprises it seemed. He work place, her knowledge of the city, her little pet... He hoped she would come back sometime, even if just for mire drinks and talking. She wasn't another sob story about an ex who cheated or someone who was going through grief by drinking it away. Made his job easier.
"Wouldn't call it that." He replied. "Don't believe in it. The bartending thing? Well a man's gotta eat somehow. You take what you get."

"True. You got your drinks and I got my cadavers."
Anna said this with perfect cheer, her features crinkled up in a rather cute smile. Looking at her, you would never think she had just talked about the dead bodies she dealt with on a daily basis in her line of work. She looked as if she were about to say something else but at that point Pascal opened his mouth and let out a little yawn.
Anna blinked and turned to look down at the chameleon. The reptile looked up at her and gave a series of small squeaks that she nodded her head to. After a few seconds, she held out her arm towards her sunflower bag and Pascal quickly descended the limb before once again disappearing into the interior of the bag. Without missing a beat, Anna picked up the bag and put it on the counter and turned back to face Axel.

"It's a living." Axel chuckled.
She was really just too nonchalant about it. He supposed he was the same with the drunks. All drunks were the same to him. Anna at least had to be mildly buzzed from her drink, or at least pleasantly tipsy. She was a nice surprise for the seasoned bartender. Perhaps he would have more surprises after this new job allowed him to settle in some more. As long as he wasn't bored, he supposed. He loathed being bored. He tended to get restless. Axel being restless was never a good thing.
"You know where to come if you want another drink."

"Yes indeedy."
Anna might have stayed longer at the bar purely to talk with Axel and get to know more about him, especially she hadn't yet learned her set number of interesting tidbits about him. However, at that moment a quirky-sounding ringtone radiated out from her purse and Pascal quickly appeared from the interior with a cellphone clamped in his jaws.
"Oh, thanks Pascal!"
Anna took the phone from her pet and flipped it open. Her blue eyes quickly read the message she had been sent and she flipped the phone closed once more before putting it back into the bag and looping it over her shoulder.
"Sorry, but looks like I'll have to put this meeting on pause and resume later. I've got a new guest in the morgue that needs to be seen pronto."

"Duty calls," he said with a chuckle.
Work. For the both of them it seemed. He had been mixing drinks for the other patrons while talking with her, but now he would have to focus on the other customers in the bar. It must have been more important for her to go back to work since it was rather late. Luckily he hadn't served her a third drink otherwise he might have tried to encourage her to sober up a bit more before she headed back into the office. He cashed out her tab and handed her back her change.
"I'll be here," he told her. "When you want that next drink."
He intended to stay working at the bar for a good long time. He didn't think his finances could handle more job hopping like he had been doing the last few years. Not many places wanted to hire 'his type' after all. Demons were called disaster magnets. If you hired them, trouble was likely to follow.

"Hey, sounds like a promise. You better keep it or next time I come in I'll considered myself put out."
She briefly let her one eye pop out at him in an evil eye gesture before giving another small laugh behind her hand.
"Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a corpse to see to."
With that, she gave Axel a friendly wave while walking between the tables and out of the bar. As she started to head towards the BPD and the newest addition to her morgue, she thought that even though they had only talked for a short time, Axel was certainly going to shape up to be a good friend. Whether he wanted her friendship or not!

Axel could only flat out laugh at that point. She had threatened to be cross if he wasn't there to mix her next drink. He honestly had nowhere else to work but it was amusing to see the human thinking her threats had any sway over him. If she did get mad, he was pretty sure she would only scare small children and little animals. It might actually by funny to watch. Furrowed brows, probably a pout, though she seemed innocent she would probably toss some caustic barbs here or there, hit you where it hurt the most. It was always the sweet types you had to watch out for.
"Wouldn't want that." He agreed.
She gave him a look. She must have thought it was intimidating, at least until she started laughing. Axel snorted. Yes, she was probably scary enough to make kittens hide from her over exuberance. Or too much play time and attention. Still, she was better than most humans he had met that night and she at least liked complicated drinks instead of beer or wine. Most of these patrons probably hadn't even tried harder liquors let alone knew how to properly pair the drinks with food.
"Go have fun at work."
And she left. Axel went back to paying more attention to the rest of his patrons who were complaining the last guy Joe was gone. At least Anna hadn't complained.
(End)
