"It's a long story. One the papers and news reporters are constantly throwing up nowadays. I dare even say blocking out the 'important election'".
The Others Unit week long ban, thankfully was coming to a close. Good thing the effects of the enhanced Sapien were wearing off, too, because that meant cops who actually did their job could get to work. The Gray Dawn was a primary target, but Shadow had another case in mind; the murder of Terra. He and Sunshine had found a clue, and when they got back to work, the first thing they'd do is get Aqua involved and get forensics from Anna.
To prove his point, Shadow handed a picture he had of himself and Sunshine. They both had their blue uniforms on, posing back to back with arms folded and confident smirks. A tiny cast iron hung off of Sunshine's waist.
"Kind of defeats the before-after illusion, huh? The Sapien effected her, too. They cut her hair, a bit turned brown and lost all of her...sunshine."

"Ah, that one... Yeah I heard about it," he commented.
Who hadn't heard about the leak of Sapien onto the streets? The media was having a field day with the 'horrendous failure' and 'tragic overconfidence that had nearly claimed the lives of the careless officers'. They were playing up the damage of the drug. Axel honestly saw nothing wrong with Sapien. If an Other wanted to be human, who were they to stop them? There wasn't any serious side effect, or so it seemed. No one died because of the drug, maybe an over dosage just meant the effects lasted longer? Who knew? Until they got a good doctor to look at it, it wasn't safe enough for streets but it could be one day. He was just surprised a reverse drug hadn't been issued for humans who wanted to be Other.
But then the man handed him a picture. Axel had to fight back a smile. For a guy who was 'only a friend' with his partner, it said a lot that he carried a picture of her with him. The girl was cute. Not Axel's type but he could at least say she was pretty. Long, blonde hair. It was hard to imagine her with anything else. Still, to make such a change to someone without consent, it annoyed Axel to the core. He might not be the biggest fan of the cops but he at least respected them enough to do their job.
"So you got hit with a dose of Sapien." he deduced. "Maybe that drink should be on the house..."

"That's the thing, it wasn't just Sapien. It was Sapien enhanced by a group that wants to wipe out Others."
That was the most Shadow could explain without stepping into confidential territory. He might not be in the force until the drug wore off, but it could explain why he was stuck as a human for as long as he had been human. The bartender offered to put it on the house, but Shadow just shook his head,
"Thanks for the gesture, but a good facility like this needs patrons. Besides, good news is the Sapien will wear of by the day after tomorrow; I've been like this for about a week."

"Human purists," Axel said.
For a police officer, he was awful forthcoming with information. It could just be case sensitive or he was a big guy who liked tough drinks but couldn't hold them. Still, the human purists were disgusting. They thought Others were impure and unnatural. They wouldn't be like this if they weren't born this way. It was as natural as breathing. Too bad they were all too willing to look past the truth. He had a few run ins with them in the past. They always learned his temper was not to push. Granted he had gone such a long time without a 'blow up' that he wasn't exactly willing to go and break his streak.
"Still, must have been rough," Axel shrugged. "Unless, you're liking the side effects?"

"Tell me about it."
Human purists was a very good definition for the Gray Dawn. There were a few Others in there, but Shadow had already given the bartender enough information. Besides, once he was back to his prickly form, he wouldn't be as friendly or talkative as he was acting now. He was curious about this bartender's attitude; the reaction hinted that he had run ins with human purists themselves, and his quick actions gave away that he was an Other. Even the venom green shade of his eyes was unnatural. But all that mattered was he was amiable and not giving Shadow uncomfortable vibes.
"The negative side effect outweighs the positive, unfortunately. Can't really defend yourself when you're used to using energy to through your punches."

"Water it down and it could be a good thing," he said. "But I mean really water it down."
Heck a lot of Others could benefit from Sapien if it was a safe use drug. Take away the danger it presented and Others who had difficulties controlling their powers their gifts could manage them. Those that looked inhuman but wanted to be human could fit in. But that was just Axel's opinion. He was a little more accepting of drug use than police officers were. He supposed it was just the occupational hazard. He was a bartender - the feeder of vices. This police officer was a protector of justice.
"You know, officer, you've never given me your name. The name is Axel," he said. "Got it memorized?"

Water it down....the bartender was onto something. Maybe something that the idiots who made the damn drug would have to get on. Once Gray Dawn was out of the picture, the Sapien drug would go back to being over-the-counter like it was meant to be. Because the bartender's opinion of it was similar to Shadow's view of the drug. If used responsibily and not for suicides, assisted murders, or well, all the illegals, it could be a benefit. The redhead introduced himself as Axel. In response, the now off duty cop pulled out his contact information.
"Detective Shadow Griffiths. You can leave out the detective part until I get back onto the force."

"Of course," Axel chuckled, all good humor at this point. "I'll keep an ear on the ground and if I hear anything I'll let you know."
He could at least admit he had a fair bit of respect for the quasi-human officer. The guy had it rough. A girl he liked but was too afraid to tell her he liked her because he was an inhuman Other, hit by Sapien and temporarily taken off duty because of said accident. Axel heard things. Once people had a few drinks in them, they were likely to give the redhead his life story if he prompted them for it. He could hear all sorts of things. It was a little funny and sad how much trust the really liquored up ones would put with him.
"Seems like you have enough cases to keep you busy for a while."

"Apparently ever time I come in, there's someone looking out for my back. Poor Sunshine will be out of a job."
The last time Shadow came in, Omar and him had become acquaintances. Not enough to be legitimate friends, but a start to that line. Axel was the same way, just without the benefit of not earning much dough. But, Omar had said he was happy with his pay. Axel must have been, too.
"Next time I'll be in, I'll be more...um...furry and prickly. So just a heads up."

"Nah, think of me as an ear on the street. Help you and your girl out."
Axel might not take a bullet for Shadow, but he was willing to help the cops. Information was the least he could do to help the cops. He was also trying to keep his temper under control. He wasn't the type to let people just do what they wanted all willy-nilly. Especially if it was hurting people. Sapien, until drug saw, was a danger to Others on the street. The last thing he wanted was for the drug to get in the hands of kids who didn't know any better. Especially kids. That was literally the most unforgivable thing.
"Thanks for the heads up." he said.

Shadow felt his face get slightly hot at the comment 'your girl'. In a way, Sunshine was his girl, just not in the romantic way. He was beginning to view Yang like a daughter, similar to how he...maybe had viewed Maria. True, Sunshine had reminded him of Maria first, but having watched her grow on the squad, seeing more than just the bubbly and artistic side to show a girl deep down torn by a broken family, he had gotten past that. "Ears on the street work, too. Especially ones who replace people with inconsistent service."

Axel couldn't hide his grin when Shadow blushed over the 'your girl' comment. It was almost a given for guys like Shadow. He really couldn't help himself. It was almost a knee-jerk reaction to tease a guy when they admitted to liking someone. All the more fun for Axel. He did like teasing people, humans in particular because they would get so shocked over the things Others could do. It also helped that he 'looked' human enough that only Others would be able to place him. Still, the way that Shadow went on about his partner, Axel wanted to see the girl who managed to get the officer's tongue twisted.
"Can't make promises. I can only give the information to you as fast as these people drink," Axel chuckled.

"Or how fast you can make said drinks to people who waterfall them like it was water."
Shadow's dry retort was a cover-up for the light teasing. At least the guy didn't insult his job. No, instead he had just said a respectful opinion about the officers and that was it. There weren't any people blaiming him for crimes because he was a cops, and in Shadow's humble opinion, it was rare to find so many of those kinds of people in Bellerouge nowadays. It was proof that Others often looked out for each other despite differences.

"I think you get enough drunken disorderlies as it is," Axel laughed.
It was a little funny how much people were like their drink choices. Shadow had chosen a black Russian. Equal parts vodka and coffee liquor. Simple. Straightforward. A developed taste for sure but it could grow on you in time. Shadow had done just that with the demon over their conversation. Granted, it was very unlikely for them to be on the same side of the bar and sharing drinks together. The guy had it rough. The least Axel could do was be an ear for him to talk to and give his own advice.

Shadow snickered. Drunk disorder cases were only given to the Others Unit if the drink was laced with voodoo potions or a demon literally put his own blood into it. He pushed the now empty glass, which rattled as the ice cubes hit the sides, over by the happy hour specials board. Back when he was a lieutenant, some cops had taken him to study a DWI.
"Drunk Others are interesting. You're lucky you don't work at Mina. They literally drink talkative bartenders for breakfast,"
