Aqua turned away, wiping at her eyes. Talking about all of this brought up so much hurt, not to mention, she was willing to let Riku go so he could 'save himself' but he was choosing to stay with her. It was a little relieving and worrying at the same time. Terra was the only one who had stood by her despite everything, but now Riku was taking the same stance. There was still the fear that Riku was lying, but she hoped time would get rid of those doubts.
"Terra... Sunshine and Shadow found his badge." Aqua whispered. "He might be... There's a chance..."
There was a chance that Terra was dead. That Vanitas had killed him. The badge was found in Vanitas' place, with Terra's blood no less. But be that as it may be, Aqua still hoped against hope it was wrong. The same thing could happen to Riku, or worse to someone Riku cared about. As long as he was partners with Aqua, he was a target by that demon. So they either take him off the streets, or die trying.

Riku hugged Aqua. He didn't know what to say. He was finding that was happening a lot in this conversation. But the chance that the person you loved, dirty cop or not, was dead? That deserved a hug. A big one. He understood that death could happen to him or anyone he cared about, but he had known this was a possibility going into the force and it hadn't changed his mind then so it wasn't going to change his mind now. He hugged Aqua like he used to hug his sister when he was comforting her. "What is, is" he murmured. "We'll just have to catch that demon and make him pay, for everything"

Aqua could feel herself choking up. She bit her lip to keep from crying. However, her eyes were already warm and misty. She let out a shaky breath. Her worst fear was that Terra was gone once and for all. The last thing he did was fight with him, all but tell him that she hated him. If that was the last interaction they had, she would never forgive herself. She had never even gotten to say goodbye. She hugged Riku back, tightly.
"How?" she whispered.
She had tried arresting him. He had just slipped out of her clutches. It was like trying to grab water with her bare hands. He was touchable, but at the same time, not. She wanted Vanitas off the streets, save herself, save her partner, save the city.

"Everyone slips up sooner or later" he said with certainty. "He's already got a warrant out for his arrest for attacking two cops, and the fact he cursed me should help. Plus if he is responsible for Terra, then that's another nail in the coffin, isn't it? He can't hide forever. Sooner or later, we'll get him, mark my words" hopefully sooner rather than later but he didn't say that. It would be enough when he was finally locked up and out of their hair.

Aqua slowly pulled away from Riku. She closed her eyes, hoping he didn't comment on how red her eyes were or how wet they looked. Riku did bring up a good point. There were a few warrants out for Vanitas' arrest. That had to count for something. Even his lawyer couldn't argue Vanitas out of what he did to Riku. Because Riku wasn't naturally warm and fuzzy like this. She just knew it was a matter of when and how. They would have to be careful. Have to keep watch.
"At least one of us is an optimist." she said.

Riku saw her red and wet eyes but kept his mouth shut. It was probably better he didn't comment on it, he knew fairies were prideful and it might be seen as an insult if he commented on her crying. He smiled. "I learned to look on the brightside because people were always being downers when I was growing up" he said cheerfully. "Somebody had to balance it all out" it had also been a stress relief for the enormous amount of pressure he'd been put under during his time in that house.

"I used to." she said. "It's just harder now."
All of this just left her feeling rather drained. She had literally spilled everything to Riku about her, about Terra. Riku had his arm broken and was cursed. He could still manage to think of something good that had come of the situation. She wasn't sure how he did it, but she was secretly very glad he did. Someone was keeping her level at least. She wiped at her eyes again, drying them for now. She would probably cry later, when Riku wasn't around because the metaphorical bandaid had been ripped from the wound that was Terra.
"But I promise, I'll make this all up to you," she assured him. "I'll get you back to normal."

He wrapped an arm around her and nodded. "Gets hard sometimes. I took a day or two off after Vanitas broke my arm. I did nothing but scream and cry and feel bad. But it passed. I know it's hard to hear, because you were close to Terra, but this is going to pass, and then you'll feel happy again. Maybe not as happy as before, but you'll feel happy" He nodded at her promise, taking it to heart and internalizing it. "You and I will try our best. If I never get back to normal, well....Being a bunny's not the worst thing that could happen"

It wasn't quite the answer she wanted to hear, but he was right. She would get over this. Maybe not tomorrow. But eventually. Faeries were long lived. She supposed, that was what she got for falling for a human. Such short lifespans. So fragile. She shook her head despite it. She didn't want to just get over it. What she and Terra had before things went south had been good. She had been so happy back then. She wanted to have that back, have him back, but it was growing further and further from her reach.
"I suppose not." she agreed. "I'm just glad it wasn't worse. Vanitas really could have hurt you."
He could be like Terra. Missing. Possibly dead. Aqua would have just turned in her badge then and gone back to the faery courts, never to return to the humans if that happened. It was funny how just a few humans could be considered 'good' in her books. She was so used to the bad that her job brought. All she knew was how lucky she was to have had Riku assigned to her when he was. She might have already given up if he hadn't, gone to the courts and hoped that the faeries would take her in.

"Vanitas wasn't expecting blinding dust blown in his eyes. He underestimated me greatly, which is rather silly to do in this town" He grinned at her despite knowing full well she had every reason to worry. He was aright idiot for not asking for backup the first sign of trouble with Vanitas. He'd been prideful and over eager. It didn't end well but at least it didn't end worse. "I'm glad I got you as a partner Aqua, I would hate to be with anyone else. You're a good cop"

"Thank goodness you had some on you." she breathed.
She wanted to tell him to carry them with him at all times. But that would be silly. He already knew to carry them. And until he changed back, he might not be able to sue his magic, so she was going to do whatever she could to get his magic back. Until then, she would just have to watch his back a little better when they were in the field together. Or until Riku could fully control his new appearance. The ears probably took some getting used to, as well as his tail and longer feet.
"I was the lucky one," she told him. "You've been a great partner. And an even better friend."
First time she used that word in a while. Friend. It felt nice.

He shrugged. He always had some on him. "If mixed another way I could've set the idiot's hair on fire" he said with a chuckle. "So he should be fairly lucky and thanking his stars that I didn't have it mixed that way" Vanitas would have even more of a reason to want to see Riku dead. More of a reason than he did now, whatever his current reason was. Riku shrugged again. Secretly he was pleased. Aqua was probably his first real friend besides his sister and he enjoyed spending time with her. "We make a good team" was all he said.

She gave a helpless sort of laugh. Now that would have been a sight to see. Vanitas' wild hair, burnt to a crisp. He probably would have had to go to a doctor if he was seriously burned. Would have made it easier to catch him if he had to go for medical attention. For now, she could only savor the fact that she still had a partner to speak of.
"Once things calm back down we'll go on patrol again." she told him. "But with Sapien in the streets... I don't want to risk the effects it could have on you in this state."
It may be a temporary cure, or it could make the curse even worse than it already was.

He laughed with her and then nodded soberly. He was interested in Sapien but there were too many unknowns around it and how it would affect him as a giant sentient rabbit. He looked at her, remembering Chat. "So the thief Chat contacted me" he said carefully. "And he asked me to patrol where a girl named Yang is to keep her safe. I heard where she was staying got busted but if we find her, can we patrol the area when off duty? I mean, I know we shouldn't and I know Chat is a criminal, but he looked so concerned"

Chat wasn't someone that Aqua knew, but Yang. She perked up the moment the young woman's name left Riku's lips. Yang... a little girl, her parents, Aqua and Terra had been too late to stop the gang. The father had been stabbed to death while the mother - a phoenix - had been drown. Then there was the fire that broke out. Aqua's hands curled into fists. Aqua had tried to find the girl after that but she had vanished. Busted... That wasn't good. Aqua had watched the foster care system and orphanages, Yang never showed up. That could only mean one thing. Street life.
"What does she need protecting from?" Aqua asked. "Who 'busted' her?"
She felt the need to go help Yang. She and Terra hadn't been fast enough to help her the first time. They didn't have the full picture when it happened so they were helpless to stop it. Aqua would be damned if that happened again. It had been one of her first cases and it had been a horrendous failure.
