The praise made Adeline beam, but what Pitch said next made her smile falter a little. In all honesty, what he said made sense. If Adeline could withstand an attack from him, she could hold her ground against Thrax. Maybe she wasn't about to obliterate him into a million pieces, but she was strong enough not to fall for his tricks. If he, or Vanitas, ever tried to mess with her again, she'd know what to do. But, Adeline couldn't help but feel a little sad at Pitch's words. Him mentoring her was the prime way they spent time together, and she liked it a lot. In a way, he understood her, and the demon part of her, better than anyone. He had made her feel strong and confident again. Maybe she would never be like she was before, but she wasn't hiding away from the world anymore. "Oh...I see."
Adeline, stop taking it so hard. You're acting like a wuss. At least, that was what she tried to tell herself. Maybe it was the way Pitch had those words that made it so bothersome to her. He didn't seem to feel happy, or sad, or anything about it. He was just...neutral. "Maybe we could still...hang out sometime? I mean, now that we're not doing lessons anymore, we don't have to meet up in this cemetery. The park's always open or any of those paths along the river..." Adeline realized she was running her mouth, but she couldn't help it. Just because Pitch had taught her what she needed to learn didn't mean they had to stop spending time together, right?

Immediately he could see the effect his words had on Adeline. Her beaming smile immediately dropped and he could sense the worry starting to take hold as her whole posture changed. Even now, he could tell that this was going to hurt Adeline on some level, perhaps quite deeply. As she spoke, wondering if they could still spend time together, he could hear the note of hope in her voice.
However, Pitch didn't waver in his resolve.
"I am sorry Adeline, but no. Our spending more time together would not benefit anyone at this point."

"But...I thought..." Adeline's words faltered. She didn't understand. Why was Pitch just cutting her off? It didn't make any sense. Just because she was strong enough to withstand an attack from Thrax didn't mean she and Pitch couldn't hang out. But, the reality of the situation tugged in the back of her mind. He was an adult, with a job and other adult things to do. He probably didn't have the time to hang out with a teenage girl. She remembered hearing his voice earlier, about how he was just helping her to catch Thrax. Was some of that true? She didn't want to believe it, but with him pushing her away like this, how could she not? She wasn't even sure if she could ask.

"You don't need me anymore."
Pitch cut across her words like a knife, sharp and to the point. He didn't understand why she was making this so much more difficult then it needed to be. He had done as he had promised and trained her so that she could face Thrax on an even footing. He had aided her and supported her and helped her reach this goal, but now she wanted more of him.
And he simply couldn't do it anymore. At least, that was what he told himself.

Adeline's shoulders slumped in defeat. Pitch certainly had a skewed view of friends. They didn't work like that. They didn't just drop each other out of the blue once they had helped the other. They stayed together through the good and the bad times. But he seemed so determined to go through with this decision. Was there any way to make him see that she still wanted him around? She could feel arguments bubbling up inside her. She wanted to tell him that of course she still needed him, that she valued their friendship, that she refused to believe that all those bad things he had said earlier were true. But, if there was one thing she had learned all these months, it was that she couldn't let her emotions get the best of her. She was feeling upset and sad and a bit angry, and it was only going to make her arguing worse. There was only one thing to do: she had to solve this problem another day.
She didn't know when or how, but she would solve it. Throwing herself in learning how to control this demon part of her had been her mission for a while. Now, she had a new one: making Pitch understand why she still wanted to be friends with him. She let out a breath before saying "Okay." She hated just walking away from this, but this wasn't a fight that she was going to win today. Even though it hurt, she needed to back away and think about this logically. "Thank you for...helping me." The words came out stiff, but it was the most she could manage right now.

Pitch waited, but when Adeline's shoulders slumped and she spoke, he knew he had won. However, a hint of defiance remained in the young woman's eyes and he realized that it was only temporary. Still, if enough time passed then perhaps she would finally move on and he would return to his natural state of being.
"Very well then. Goodbye, Adeline."
He paused for a moment, debating his next course of action, before finally extending a pale hand to her.
"And should you find yourself in danger once more.......you know where I am."

For a moment, Adeline could just gaze at Pitch's hand. Shaking it meant this would be all over, that it would end things. Sure, she wanted to make sure this wouldn't be the last time she would see Pitch, but still. It was like closing the curtain, or watching the words The End show up in a movie. Her hand reached up to take his, but then an impulse hit her, and she acted on it. She stepped forward, closing the distance between herself and Pitch, and hugged him.
It was brief, but held plenty of emotion. Normally, she'd be a little more restrained, but it wasn't like anybody else would be hanging around a cemetery. Besides, Pitch wanted this to be their last meeting. Why not go all out? It wasn't like she would have to deal with the consequences. Hugging him felt almost like hugging a stiff, cold statue, but Adeline still wanted to remember it. She knew Pitch had a heart under all that, and he smelled like a cool night when just a small breeze was blowing and the stars were out. She pulled back quickly, hoping that her fast heart-beat didn't show. She had drawn this out long enough. She had to leave, before she lost her composure. "Goodbye," was all she said before walking away at a brisk pace. Her hands were clenched into fists and her back was straight, but that still didn't stop some tears from pricking at the corners of her eyes. She was determined not to let this end here, but until then, she'd have to deal with this pain. And she wasn't looking forward to it.

Pitch often thought that he could read a person's next move even before they realized they were going to make it, but what Adeline did next was something so unexpected that he never would have predicted it.
She hugged him.
He froze, completely shocked and rooted to the spot as Adeline put her arms around him and put her head against his chest. He didn't look down at her, but he could feel the warmth of her body pressed against his, could hear her soft breathing just below his face and smell the scent of falling rain and jasmine in her hair.
The moment seemed to stretch on for an eternity as he tried to make sense of what was happening, of the young witch who stood embracing him as if he were something precious about to be lost. And as his mind struggled desperately to make sense of it, his heart beat out a rhythm he had never experienced before.
Suddenly, it was over as Adeline stepped away from him, offering her own goodbye as she turned and left the graveyard. All Pitch could do was watch as her form strolled between the tombstones back to the city that surrounded them and yet seemed to be a world away in that instant. Even after her figure disappeared, he remained as a completely new sensation settled over him.
It wasn't until he finally stepped back into the shadows of a tomb and he faded into the darkness that Pitch realized what this strange new feeling was.
It was loss.
