"You think this is easy for me?" Moses snapped right back. "I'm throwing away everything for you. My reputation, my safe little life, probably friends when they find out. You are everything to me! And you weren't even going to say goodbye, even when you knew I was willing to throw everything down the drain for you. All for you. Always" Mose's eyes went back to normal and he rubbed them. "I don't know why I love you, or how, when all you've been is trouble for me. Maybe I like the chaos, I don't know. But I do know that I'm the only one in this city who's on your side, and I'm just trying to make the most of this. My heart...and you wouldn't even let me talk to you, to tell you, in the court..." Moses felt broken and empty and full and conflicted all at once.

"You think I don't know that? I spent days in interrogation with Pitch and the goodie-goodie squad. They were all asking why you were able to stop me."
Actually, that was something Vanitas questioned himself, but it was all starting to sink in like a sick sense of dread. Moses had him wrapped around his finger and Vanitas hadn't even known it until now. The yellow eyed demon didn't like thinking about the interrogation. But the court room hearing was the worst. Pitch had asked and pushed and pressed to find out. It took a lot of lying and his own evasion to answer the question but at the same time give the police no information.
"Everything I did after they arrested me, I did to-"
Did to protect him. Vanitas sank back into his seat as that realization dawned on him a soft silence following him as he did. His thoughts were not about how he could wiggle out of it, because he knew he couldn't, but what he had to do or say that there was no association between him or Moses. To protect Moses' reputation and his image in the community. He might have been hailed a hero because he 'bravely' went in and subdued the biggest most annoying demon in the city. He was going to leave without a goodbye because he didn't think that Moses actually cared. The whole court thing, was also another attempt to keep Moses' image intact.
"People didn't need to see us together." he decided on.

"I told them I didn't want to talk about it" Moses said with a dawning realization that because of that they'd tried to pull the information out of Vanitas. "I'm sorry. If I'd known it would cause such trouble, I'd have probably just told them the truth. Pitch knows who my father is, and figured out I'd been nice to you, among other things, when we talked, so he'd have been able to smooth things over with the others" but then Moses might have been implicated in the kidnappings, or murders or everything else. He sank in his seat.
"Did to what?" Moses asked, curious. Surely not to protect Moses. They weren't exceptionally close despite Moses's longing. "I don't care if they see me with you. I just want to be with you" Moses argued softly. "Is that really so hard to understand? I would have scrounged up the money for Parole if it was at all possible. You could have stayed at my place, we could have been...we could have been happy"

"You said so yourself." he muttered. "Just being associated with me could make you lose everything. So I cut association. You're not losing shit because of me."
His head drooped as he spoke. It was probably the closest he was getting to admit he had tried to shield Moses from his reputation as it was going to get. He wasn't going to outright spell it out or directly say he had been thinking of Moses' life first. He had tried so hard to make it like there was nothing between them. Not even friendship. Though he couldn't deny knowing Moses, since Moses had name dropped to get the chance to talk to Vanitas on the phone.
"I wasn't getting parole." he said. "I killed people."
Vanitas didn't get a 'happily ever after' because he had been the bad guy. In fairy tales, the bad guy always lost. He just hadn't expected to lose like this. He had anticipated going out in the heat of a fight and dying. Now there was no point for any of the things he had done because the tainted Sapien had been stopped and his grand exit plan had been thwarted. It just made the last ten years of his life completely and utterly pointless.

"But I don't care!" Moses nearly shouted in exasperation. "I'd give everything just to have you with me and I don't care who hears that. It's the truth" But Vanitas's admission revealed something; he cared enough about Moses to try to shield him from bad association. That meant so much. "I would have argued for parole" Moses said stubbornly. "You were hurting. And you're a demon. Killing and hurting is part of who we are. We can starve that part but it doesn't mean that it still doesn't come naturally" Moses sighed and looked into Vanitas's eyes. "My mother was a lady of the night who sold her child's soul to live a comfortable life. I'm doomed to be bad, but I try to be good. You mentioned earlier we don't know each other. So that's my biggest secret. That and I chose to live on the streets because my aunt blamed my demonic heritage for every bad thing that happened. Now you know me" he gave a wry half smile. "And I don't give a flying fuck what you do with that information"

"I do care!" Vanitas hissed venomously. "I lost everything. My home. My school. My parents. Everything because of humans. If you think I'm going to let you subject yourself to that all because of some stupid infatuation you're stupider than you act."
He had lost everything one by one. His parents lost their jobs during the Black War when people found out there were Others out there. No one wanted a incubus in the work place. The men were afraid his father would seduce their wives and the women were afraid he would force himself on them. His mother was then cast out because one of her co-workers accused her of stealing. The loss of income lost them their homes and they were on the streets when the riots happened. His parents were killed in one of them.
"That's why I hate humans! They killed my parents. So I tainted the Sapien and gave it to Grey Dawn so they would kill humans." he said.
He didn't know why he was being so personal with Moses. He hadn't told a soul this. Not even the detectives who questioned him for days. It was just spilling out of his lips. Of course there were some things he was holding back because it still hurt to talk about. He also didn't do this much honesty on a day to day basis.
"I knew how to make the Sapien because I was in the fucking lab where they discovered how to make the shit." he said.

"You actually care?" Moses asked in absolute shock and surprise. He bit his lip and listened to Vanitas's confession about some of his background. There were no words. "But Sapien drugs and kills Others" Moses pointed out. "You were hurting your own kind. It was bad enough Hexxus had to seek me out to warn me against using it. You offered me some" That revelation hurt. He used the Sapien to try and kill humans. But Moses was half-human. Half of what Vanitas hated. and he was offered the Sapien by Vanitas. Why did Vanitas have to be so contradictory? "If you cared at all you wouldn't have offered to turn me into what you hated most" Moses accused quietly.

Vanitas frowned when Moses asked about him actually caring. He shifted a little in his seat, obviously uncomfortable with confirming or denying it. He kept his gaze down. He closed his eyes, feeling very tired and very drained. He was literally confessing everything he ever did to Moses. It was both liberating and worrying. Considering that he was literally spilling everything.
"I made them two batches. One of the real Sapien and one of tainted stuff for their stunt at the water plant..."
He had made the Grey Dawn group a different batch from what he first gave them. Had to make it look like he was playing by their rules. Their little 'test' run with the police the first time was evidence enough that the group thought they could trust him. He had been the one to use them the whole time. But they failed. Now they were in prison right along with him.
"I didn't offer you the stuff I spiked." he said. "Besides, you hate demons. You... fit into the human world better than the demon hierarchy anyways."

Moses frowned. "You could have killed people who actually like Others! You were going to kill thousands of innocents because of old spite? Following that logic I could have gone on a killing spree against both humans and demons. They both wronged and hurt me. How does hurting the ones who hurt you make anything okay or right? You don't have to be a monster!" Moses sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I embraced my demon side for years. I drank, fought, smoked, survived and was angry and afraid of everything and everyone. I only had Yang to back me up. I almost killed a man one night and realized I didn't want to live that life. But if you had seen me two years ago...you wouldn't have said that"

"They've killed Others who were kind to humans!" Vanitas snapped. "If humans decide you're bad, then you're bad. There's no getting around it."
He had tried to fight back against what they thought. He tried the clean and narrow path. He tried doing the 'right thing'. All that got him was kicked, beaten and tossed around like he was garbage. So if he was the bad guy to the humans, he was the bad guy. He wasn't going to try to be something they already deemed he would never be.
"Well I didn't know you then."

"I got around it" Moses shot back. "You probably think I'm just a clean and pristine good boy but I wasn't. People hated me and I cleaned myself up and got a job. Several jobs. I move around. I probably won't even be in the same apartment in a few weeks" he sighed. "It's better you didn't. I probably would have done something" something bad, something that would get him in as much trouble as Vanitas was in now. "I just want to move on from my old life. But I can't leave it all the way behind. Maybe you can turn yourself around this time. Maybe you can be better, rise above what people say. I did"

"I have a life sentence and I doubt anyone is going to let me out for 'good behavior'." Vanitas pointed out.
He had just started a fight to get into solitary after all. That was the whole reason he even came to talk to Moses because they threatened to take that away from him. He wouldn't do well in general population because he was a demon and because people were going to target him for what he was. He didn't want to deal with the paranoia and the constant looking over his shoulder, waiting for someone to shank him with a sharpened toothbrush or something.
"I... I'm not as hopeful as you." he said.

"A human's life. You'll be out before you know it" But Moses would be old by then. As far as he knew he aged like a human as long as he didn't bring out his demonic side. Therefore for the foreseeable future he was going to age like any normal human. Making him around 80 when Vanitas finally got out. An old man. "Try hope sometimes. It works wonders" he said with a smile.

Vanitas frowned. He knew that Moses couldn't be okay with that sort of sentence. Especially if he just insisted how much he 'loved' him. 60 years was a long time to wait for a human. A halfling... Well, there was no telling. Time was strange and Vanitas was a relatively 'young' demon. It would be a blink for him. He wasn't exactly going to be the most positive about his prison sentence.
"Haven't ever had much to hope for." Vanitas said softly.

Moses sighed and closed his eyes. "Hope for a miracle" he finally said after awhile. "A miracle so you can be free and able to start over. That's all we can hope for" He gave a feeble little smile and shrugged. Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder and he jumped before looking around. It was a guard. "I should go. I...take care of yourself, okay? I'll try to come back again Vanitas"
