"Be careful, he may very well be human. A tricky, sneaky human" Dorian said dryly and once more directed a mistrusting look at the little reptile on Anna's shoulder. He turned his attention back to the machines. "But of course. Though in the Unseelie courts we had to use magic to get the same results. I wonder if your technology is more or less reliable. Not that it matters, it'll be dust in fifty years..." he ran his hands along each of the machines almost lovingly. "Now, when do we get started?"

"You don't like humans very much, do you?"
Anna's question was straightforward but held no bad feelings within it. She merely looked at Dorian curiously as she spoke, her happy but intelligent blue eyes watching him as he moved amongst the machines he would be working with very soon. Pascal picked up on Anna's mood immediately and gave a small squeak to try and reclaim her attention, but she continued to watch the Unseelie instead.
"Well, I can't say I've had a lot of experience working with magic to solve cases, but this tech and good old hard work have seen a lot of criminals put away, cases closed and justice served."

He looked at her, rather grateful to the honest and straightforward way she asked. No beating around the bush. He liked that. "Humans destroy everything in their path" he stated with an air of finality. "And yes Unseelie are destructive but nowhere near you humans levels of destruction. You're also more...strange than us. And for such a short-lived species you are a problem over and over again. Killing dragons, burning witches, ripping wings off the fey folk and turning Huldra human on a whim. I like destruction but your propensity for it baffles and scares even I" he said honestly and in a measured, flat tone. He turned back to the machines. "A lot, not all. That is the pity. Magic and technology can only do so much..."

"Do you think all humans are like that, or just some?"
The medical examiner was still watching Dorian and her question held genuine curiosity. For someone like Anna, who almost always looked on the bright side of things and searched for the silver lining in even the darkest cloud, she couldn't quite grasp what it would be like to have such a bleak and dark view of all of humanity. She knew there were plenty of horrible, evil people in the world and they did all the things that Dorian had mentioned, but she also knew that there were truly good people as well.
It was this belief in good people that had seen Anna through some truly horrible cases.

He paused and raised a cautionary finger. "Most. Not all. There are of course exceptions to every rule and I've met a handful of good humans in my time. But they happen to be few and very far in between" He gave her a direct stare for the first time, dark blue eyes penetrating the lighter color with hard certainty. "There is hardly anything good in the world. There never was a lot to begin with and there's even less now. Hence my dark outcast on the whole shiny teaparty"

"Well then..... guess I'll just have to work extra hard to try and show you there's more good then bad!"
Anna grinned largely at Dorian as she said this, viewing his admission of having a rather dark outcast towards the world as something of a challenge. The Unseelie might see far more evil then good in humanity, but she wasn't about to let that stop her from trying to show him that just the opposite was true. After all, she was the woman who had managed to make the likes of Shadow laugh occasionally and even gotten Pitch to smile once. If she could make such 'dark and sinister' members of the BPD lighten up a bit, then Dorian didn't seem like such an impossible challenge.
"Anyways, you'll have to get logged into the system and go through some pretty basic training. Once all that's out of the way, you'll get your first case assignment and get to play 'mad scientist' with these devices to your heart's content!"

Dorian's only response was to raise an eyebrow and give her a look. She was quite stupid and deluded ,wasn't she? He shrugged. "Then let's get me logged in and undergo this training so I can play with my new toys" he patted the machine beside him lovingly. He snapped his fingers and pulled out a slightly crumpled, much creased picture of a little green skinned girl with curly hair. He smoothed it out gently and placed it by the machine gingerly. He smiled gently at the picture and nodded to Anna. "Alright, now we can start"

Anna, however, wasn't focused on Dorian in that moment but on the picture he hat just produced from his pocket. She stepped closer to it and spent a moment looking thoughtfully down at the subject of the photograph. It was a young girl with green-hued skin and a mess of curly hair. Given the tender way he handled the image and the fond look on his face, he cared deeply for this girl. And since he had been displaying himself as a rather cynical individual, Anna took note of this display of emotions.
However, she didn't bother asking Dorian who the girl was or how he knew her, instead filing away this new development for later when she had gotten to know the Unseelie better. Instead, she gave herself another moment of looking at the photograph before turning her attention back to him.
"Abso-toot-ly! We'll just pop on upstairs to one of the free computers and get you all set up!"

Dorian allowed her to look but kept close by. He couldn't afford to lose his only picture of his daughter. She was a little camera-shy. Dorian nodded to Anna and followed her. "I suppose you're going to say this place will feel just like home and what not" he stated. "But I want to stop you. 'Home' for me is in the courts, surrounded by death and carnal desires. Home is also a peaceful cabin with..." he paused and shrugged. "With a little hybrid girl. I doubt the city or the department will ever feel like either home"

Anna had led Dorian out the labs and towards a staircase. As they began to ascend towards the upper levels, she suddenly stopped and turned to look at Dorian in mild surprise, as if what he said were shocking. She considered him in utter silence for a moment before suddenly and inexplicably starting to laugh. It was a quiet thing, rather different from the flamboyant and colorful image she had given off to the Unseelie.
After a moment, the gentle laughter came to an end and she spoke.
"The BPD feel like home? No, places aren't what make you feel like you're home. The people you come to know, the ones you learn the love, they're the ones who make it feel like home."
With that said, she gave another grin to Dorian as if his words about cardinal desires and being surrounded by death didn't matter much. No, the thing that seemed important to her was his mention of the little girl, because it told her all that she really needed to know about Dorian. It told her that, despite all he had said and claimed, he still cared for someone.

He stared at her in surprise and then rolled his eyes. "I've only got one person I really care about, everyone else can rot in the dungeons. But I still consider two places to be home" He snorted. "Utter nonsense, what you're saying. The sentimentality of humans. Hmph" He continued following her up the stairs after she grinned at him despite his disturbing words and watched her with interest. She was an interesting human, to say the least. He wanted to break that happy facade she held. He wanted to rip her joy away. But that would be utterly silly to do so soon into the acquaintance ship.

"Oh, you'd be surprised what can happen. Things change all the time, after all."
Anna beamed warmly up at Dorian, not believing for an instant that he was a one note personality that only focused on the bad. No, she had seen it briefly in his eyes when he spoke of the girl in the photograph. However, she chose to leave it at that for the time being since she and Dorian would be working together soon enough. No point in rushing something that time and patience would reveal.
(End Thread?)
