Adeline didn't even want to think about what might have happened if Pitch's gamble had gone wrong. Would he have been asleep forever? Would he have lost something, like his sight or a power of his? She shook the thought away before any what-if scenarios made her too anxious. It didn't do good to focus on what could have gone wrong. The important thing was that things turned out okay. Still, Pitch had a long way to go. Even a simple movement like moving up into a sitting position caused him pain. "Maybe I should get a nurse or something," Adeline said, glancing towards the door. Whatever pain medication they were giving Pitch, he might need more of it now that he was awake.

"No. I've rested long enough."
As Pitch spoke, he began to remove the pieces of medical equipment that covered his arms. His movements were slower then normal and he did his best to avoid jarring his side, but it was clear enough that he was still in pain. He was simply too proud to admit it. His Nightmares had watched the whole exchange between Adeline and him silently but now that he was moving, they began to give small snorts. Clearly they could sense that their master was in pain.
"Thrax is still out there in Bellerouge, madder then ever and causing who knows what kind of harm. I have to finish what I started with him."
Despite the hurt ringing through his body, his expression was one of dark determination. What Thrax had done to him was an underhanded move. It wasn't uncommon for demon's to use emerald weapons against each other, given that it was one of the few things that could deal real damage. After all, he had used an emerald bullet against Vanitas when reduced to a human-like state by Sapien, but to create a powder and use it in such a desperate, underhanded manner.....
It was very clear to the Terror Demon now that Thrax was truly losing his mind. And that made him all the more dangerous, willing to use whatever means necessary to achieve his goals even at the risk of harming himself.

"Wait, no, hold on a second," Adeline said, putting a hand on Pitch's chest. "You're not fully healed yet. You need to take it easy." She understood why Pitch wanted to go after Thrax as soon as possible. A regular demon was dangerous enough. But a demon who had lost his mind was even worse. If Thrax was going crazy from being hunted down so much, he'd want to achieve his goal quickly. And as far as Adeline knew, he was looking for someone to replace her, another magic user he could corrupt with his demon nature. But Adeline couldn't let Pitch go after him again when he was still recovering from their last fight. Knowing Thrax, he'd take full advantage of Pitch's injuries and use whatever dirty trick he could think of to exploit them. And Adeline couldn't let that happen, not when Thrax had come pretty close ending Pitch's life. If Pitch was going to take on Thrax again, he would do it when his injuries were healed and his strength was back.

Adeline clearly didn't think Pitch was up to anything at that time and put a light hand on his chest. Pitch was still in his black robes despite the doctors wanting to change him into the standard outfits the other patients wore. However, Pitch's robe was made from the shadows and removing it unless he wanted it gone was about as easy as removing his skin.
The Demon looked down at where Adeline's hand rested against him for a moment before shaking his head and lightly pushing her arm aside.
"I can take it easy once Thrax is gone."
His tone made it clear that when he encountered the crimson Demon again, there would be no option for him. No, all that would away Thrax was a one way trip back to the Hell from which he had crawled.

"You won't be able to catch him if you're still in pain," Adeline argued. "If he's dirty enough to use emerald dust, he'll aim for your injuries with everything he's got. And what will you do then?" She sighed. Was there any point in talking Pitch out of this? He could be stubborn sometimes. But Adeline felt like she needed him to understand this. "Believe me, I want him to be caught too," she said. "I want to go after him too and...I want to get back at him, for what he did to you." She still remembered that awful rage that had coursed through her when Thrax had hurt Pitch. If Thrax had fought her, she wouldn't have hesitated to tear him to pieces. Adeline had felt anger before. It was usually what triggered her demon side to emerge. But that had been different. She had felt angry because someone she loved had been hurt. Rage like that had nearly driven her to do something she knew she shouldn't have, and it frightened her a little. "But if he's going to get captured, or killed, or whatever, you need to be at your strongest. Otherwise, he may..." Adeline's voice trailed off. She couldn't finish her sentence. Just saying that Thrax may kill Pitch next time made her afraid. She wanted that to have the smallest chance of happening possible. And the stronger Pitch was, the smaller that chance would be.

"He may what?"
Pitch's pride was going strong in that moment, making him speak and act far more rashly than he usually was. The fact that he had been unable to protect himself from Thrax was bad enough, but the worst of it was that he hadn't been able to keep Adeline safe. He had failed in his promise to the young woman he had come to love and it was gnawing away at him like some vicious parasite.
He turned and looked at Adeline, a frown on his face and his expression dark. Another part of his mind whispered, reminding him that Adeline was right and that if he tried to fight Thrax in his current state, the crimson demon would only take advantage of his injuries. However, the stubborn and prideful part didn't want to listen.
He was Pitch Black, a Terror Demon and previously one of the highest ranking demons in Disparion's forces. Even with his change of heart and working on the side of the BPD, his powers were the stuff of legends and his name still struck fear in the hearts of many.
And yet somehow Thrax had managed to best him.....

Adeline glanced up. Pitch's words almost sounded cold, like he was daring her to voice what she was thinking. What was going on with him? The only other time she could recall him acting so stubbornly was after the jail break, where she practically had to gnaw away at him until he admitted his feelings for her. It looked like she may have to do that again, in order to make him see sense. "He may kill you," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "He almost did this time, and he'll try his hardest to make it happen. He'll use whatever he can find." Pitch getting hit in the face with emerald dust had been bad enough. What if he got hit somewhere even more vital, like the lungs or the heart? Would he even survive? "If you try and fight him now, you'll just end up right back here in the hospital. Or you'll be in a body bag." She gripped his hand with both of her own. "And I can't let you do that to yourself."

Pitch's face grew even darker and he looked as if he wanted nothing more then to get up and leave. The two Nightmares picked up on his mood as did the surrounding shadows. The horses snorted and slammed their hooves on the floor while the darkness could only be described as threatening. If anyone else but Adeline had been present in that moment, they most likely would have been attacked regardless of their intent.
The Demon's hand dug deeply into the side of the bed where he had been laying only a few minutes beforehand, unconscious and badly injured. However, he couldn't ignore the feeling of Adeline's hands on his or the look of concern on Adeline's face, the love in her eyes. Slowly, by degrees the tension eased from his shoulders and everything in the room began to grow calm once more. The Nightmares grew still and the shadows retreated to their normal positions.
"I can't just let him get away with what he did. Not again."
Pitch's words were still angry, but they were tired as well. His ribs seemed to be beating in time with his heart, each pulse accompanied by a deep ache.

The Nightmares were getting agitated. That much was clear. Adeline wasn't sure if they were getting riled up by her fears or Pitch's. It was clear enough what the demon was afraid of: failure. He had failed to capture Thrax and it was eating him up. It was driving him to go out there and challenge him again as soon as possible. His next words were still angry, but also tired. It reminded Adeline of when she had gotten sick as a kid, and was tired from fighting something like a fever or a cold all day. That was usually when her mom would come in with some chicken noodle soup and a potion that would help her get better and assure her that she'd be okay. But this situation was different. It couldn't be fixed with something as simple as that. "He's not getting away with it," she said. "It's not like you're just letting him go ride off into the sunset or whatever. You're just putting things off until you're better. There's a difference between giving up and waiting to try again until you're strong enough."

Pitch sat in silence, the anger still present in his posture and the set of his features. Still, he knew that Adeline was right and that going after Thrax in his current condition would not only be reckless, it would be stupid. If he was going to finally take Thrax down for good and not fall prey to another underhanded trick or a trap, he would have to be at full strength. As it was, he doubted he could even have a mock fight with Adeline and win.
Still, it wasn't easy for the Demon to admit it. He was used to being strong, powerful, unbeatable. What was he now?
"...yes. You're right."
It was hard to say so, and the words were bitter in his mouth but he also knew they were the truth. All the same, that didn't mean he wanted to just lay around in a hospital bed while Thrax was doing who knew what.
"But I can't stay here. I will heal far better in my own domain. And I should report what I know to the other officers at the BPD."
As he spoke, Pitch stood up from the hospital bed in one quick movement like it was nothing. However, a second after getting to his feet he staggered slightly and his hand once more sought out the wound in his side. His teeth were set in pain as the world shifted drunkenly around him but he forced himself to remain standing.

Adeline let out a sigh of relief. At least Pitch saw the sense in what she was saying, even if the last thing he wanted was to just lie down and recuperate. But Adeline knew this was the best thing to do. And she'd be by his side as much as possible. She felt like she owed him that much at least, for saving her. She wasn't going to let herself wallow in guilt and self-pity right now, not when Pitch needed her. However, Pitch did insist on recovering at his own place and reporting what he knew. True, the police had some account of what happened, but a second view-point might be good. Besides, Adeline had been pretty hysterical the first time she had explained what had happened, and distracted during follow-up questions since she was worried about Pitch. He might give some facts she might have glossed over. As he staggered slightly on his feet, she was by his side in an instant, putting an arm around him for support. "What would be the best way to get there?" she asked. "Should I call a cab or..." Then again, a cab seemed a little mundane for going to Pitch's domain, or whatever he called it. Were the Nightmares safe to use? Adeline wasn't sure if riding on a horse would be good for Pitch's wound.

Immediately Adeline was by his side with one arm around him so that the world was no longer so unsteady under his feet. Normally he would have found such assistance annoying at the very least, but he couldn't help and give the young witch a look of thanks.
"My Nightmares will see me there."
Even though he was speaking of his shadow horses, his yellow eyes never left Adeline's face. Despite his own misgivings about being in a relationship with her, he realized that she did truly love him. The fact that he was still alive was proof of that.
Adeline had been willing to face Thrax even when he had been in danger, had been willing to challenge a being that she feared above almost any other. She had done it for him. Despite everything, she had loved him more then she feared Thrax.
"Adeline..."
He said her name but paused suddenly, as if he didn't know quite what he wanted to say.

Adeline glanced back at the Nightmares. If Pitch trusted them to get him back, then she'd probably have to do the same. It wasn't that she didn't trust them, far from it. She knew they were loyal to Pitch. She just couldn't help but fret. Pitch was doing better now and she didn't want anything to happen that might make him worse. The sooner he was back on his feet, the better the both of them would feel. She still believed if anyone could capture Thrax, Pitch could. But he had to get better first, otherwise who knew what might happen. She glanced up as he said her name, but his voice trailed off, as if unsure how to continue. "Yes?" she said, wondering what was on his mind.

Pitch looked down at Adeline for several long moments, unable to find the words he needed to say what he was feeling in that moment. However, after a time he just shook his head and managed to give the young woman the smallest of smiles.
"I'm just trying to make sense of it, how you could be so brave. I've known all kinds of different fears throughout my existence and seen how they eat away at people, how they give into those fears and let them change who they are. But then I look at you...."
Here he paused once more, the only sound in the room that of the disconnected machinery and the distant echoes coming from the rest of the hospital. He knew that a nurse or someone would come along soon now that all the wires and tubes were off of him. The disconnected devices would be sending an alarm to them and they would want to make sure he was doing ok. And if they found him trying to leave they would most likely try to talk him into staying longer, perhaps even force him. After all, he was still injured and weak.
Still, he continued to look down at Adeline silently. He had already admitted not so long ago that he loved her, but he hadn't realized how those emotions could actually grow stronger and change.

If Adeline were honest, she'd say how silly of a question that was. She gave a little laugh before saying "Well, people do say that love conquers all," she said. "I guess my love for you outweighs any fears I might have for Thrax." While it was true that Adeline was still scared of the demon, she'd face him if it meant protecting Pitch. Her demon side had shown that much. She'd been ready to tear Thrax in two if that was what it took to protect Pitch. Part of her was still worried about that, but she wasn't going to mull over it now. She had to be strong for Pitch. If he was going to recover from this, she had to be there for him and give him all the help he needed. Even now, as nurses and doctors burst into the room and had a million questions about Pitch, Adeline gave them the low-down as best she could. Yes, Pitch had gone into a coma to he could heal himself. No, he wasn't about to die. And yes, he did really need to heal at his place because it was more suited to his demon nature. Adeline wasn't sure if they took her word for it, because they all glanced at Pitch, almost as if they needed some confirmation from him as well.
