There was a long moment of silence. A very long moment. Adeline wondered if Pitch would answer her. If not, then she wasn't going to push him. If holding him in her arms was what he needed, then that was what she would do. At the very least, it seemed to be working. She felt him relax as he held her back. This was the embrace she'd missed. Nothing ever made her feel more secure or complete than when Pitch held her close. But the silence was finally broken by Pitch's answer. Adeline's eyes widened in horror at what she heard, and it didn't take her long to put together that Disparion was responsible for the state Pitch was in. But even more than horror, she felt a surge of anger. How dare Disparion take the person that meant the most to her? How dare he hurt Pitch this way? "Son of a bitch," she cursed. "Well, he's not hurting you again. Not while I'm around." Adeline didn't care if Disparion was the Devil himself. If he ever showed his face in Bellerouge again, if he ever tried to lay a finger on Pitch, he was going to have to answer to her. She refused to just stand by when Pitch was in so much pain.

"NO!"
The single word seemed torn from Pitch and suddenly he wasn't holding Adeline in his embrace anymore but had her at arms length, staring down at her with eyes that seemed too wide, too anxious.... to fearful.
"I don't care what he did to me, what he might still do. It doesn't matter but don't you dare try to seek him out for revenge! Don't even speak of such a thing! He must not.... he cannot EVER lay hands on you!"
His grip grew tighter on Adeline's arms and it felt as though a tremor were running through his whole body, making him shake ever so slightly. However, his gaze remained riveted to Adeline's face.

The word "no" seemed to practically explode out of Pitch. It nearly made Adeline jump out of her skin. If she was honest, she'd admit that Pitch's fearful eyes and the way he begged her not to seek Disparion out made her much more afraid than the Devil himself. She hated seeing him so scared. "Pitch, I'm not gonna go on a reckless rampage or anything," she assured him. "But if he or anyone tries to hurt you again, I don't want to just sit by and do nothing. I can't, not when I love you more than anyone in the whole world." She looked up at him, trying to get him to understand. "I want to be there whenever you need me, do whatever I can to help you. I want to keep you safe and protect you like all the times you've protected me. I know you're...scared and hurting, but I'm here. And I won't leave you."

Pitch didn't release his hold on Adeline even as she spoke in her smoothing voice and the fear didn't leave his eyes either. She didn't understand, how could she? Adeline might contain demonic energy, even posses some traits of those that came from Hell, but she was human at heart and had never experienced the anything like Disparion and the realm he ruled. Even has he thought off his former Master, the wound in his side gave out a sharp pain. Humans couldn't endure what he had, but how could he make her see that? How could he make her understand that he simply wasn't worth it, no matter how much she might love him?
"Adeline.... I am the Lord of Fear, a Terror Demon that surpasses all others. I very well would have become second to Disparion if fate had not intervened in my life. Despite all that, I am ...."
Pitch dropped his gaze from her face, trying to make the words come out so that she might grasp just how dire the whole situation was. He had never said this before and had once believed it to be impossible but now he knew better. And if he were to keep Adeline safe, he would have to say them.
"I am afraid of Disparion."

Seeing that this whole thing had made Pitch afraid was one thing. Hearing him actually admit it was something else entirely. Adeline could see him struggle to say it, how he hated to admit it. It nearly brought tears to her eyes. She wanted so badly to make this better, to make this right. But what could she do? Where could she even start? "I know you are," she said softly. "I know how it feels. After Thrax made me what I am, I was so scared all the time. I was afraid to do anything, go anywhere." She looked back up at Pitch. "But then you showed up. And I started being not so scared anymore. And I know that Thrax is probably a walk in the park compared to Disparion and both of us are scared of him but...we can at least be scared together, right?" It didn't matter that they didn't know what to do, or what might happen if Disparion showed up again. Adeline just wanted to be by Pitch's side.

As Adeline spoke, Pitch slowly raised his gaze so that it was once again locked onto her own beautiful, naive eyes. And while he so desperately wanted what she said to be the case, it simply wasn't.
"I am not afraid for myself."
The words were spoke so softly if it hadn't already been as quiet as the grave she might have not heard them at all. Slowly, he released his grip on Adeline's arms and merely stood before her. He no longer tried to conceal the hurt done to him, the vulnerability that had somehow overcome him, the terror of what he had faced. And yet all that seemed to pale in comparison to what he had to tell her.
"I am not afraid of what might happen to me, Adeline..... I'm afraid of what might happen to you."

"Then I'll get stronger," Adeline desperately promised. "I'll learn how to fight better, so you won't have to be afraid anymore." She wasn't sure if that would even make much of a difference, but she didn't care. She just didn't want Pitch to be scared anymore. "Just...please..." She wiped her eyes, trying not to cry. She wasn't even sure what she was begging for at this point. What could she say that she hadn't said already? Disparion had broken and beaten Pitch and there almost seemed to be nothing she could do to help him. What could one girl even do to heal damage like that? Adeline had no idea, but she at least wanted to try. That was what you were supposed to do when the person you loved got hurt. You helped them get better, and you protected them so it never happened again. Adeline just wanted that chance.

Despite her tears and her pleas, Pitch might have continued to argue if another ripple of pain hadn't struck him. He let out a low hiss and gritted his teeth together, clamping his hands over the recently healed wound in his side. Even though Adeline's magic had healed the flesh, the pain was as intense as ever. It almost felt as if something had moved underneath the recently mended skin....
Once the pain had subsided somewhat, he looked up into Adeline's teary eyes and gave a low sigh. He simply didn't have the strength in that moment to argue anymore but he wasn't about to let her put herself in danger if Disparion was still intent on harming him. However, he didn't have to tell her that. And perhaps it was better that way if she was so set on protecting him.
"I need to rest. These injuries... it will take time for me to fully recover. Then I have to report to the BPD immediately, find out just what has happened in my.... in my absence."
After a moment's pause, he reached out a single hand and gently stroked the side of Adeline's face. Even now it seemed like this must all be a trick, just another way for Disparion to torture him for ever daring to leave the ranks of Hell.
"I am sorry, Adeline."

It looked like Pitch was about to say something in reply. Instead, he suddenly gave a hiss of pain and his hands moved to the wound on his side. "Pitch? Pitch, what's wrong?" Adeline asked, her hands reaching out to hold him. For a moment, she feared the worst, but all Pitch said was that he needed time to rest and recover. She gave a little nod. It'd probably take him a while to fully heal from all the wounds he had gotten. As for the mental stuff, that was probably going to take even longer. Adeline just hoped that she could do something to help. "It's okay, you're gonna be alright," she said, trying to reassure him. "You can rest all you want. I'm here."

Pitch gave the smallest nod of his head, his hand still gently resting on the side of Adeline's face. To feel her warmth, to simply know she was there and real....
"Once I have healed and learned of what has happened here, I will be back. I am not leaving you again. I promise."
Slowly, the Terror Demon leaned forward and kissed her softly, his lips lightly touching her own. If he'd had any doubts or second-thoughts about if anything had been worth the torture he had endured, they all vanished. The proof of his conviction lay right in front of him.

Adeline still couldn't help but worry. The person she loved the most was hurt and scared and she wanted nothing more than to just take it all away. Pitch promised never to leave her again, and even though he wasn't a fan of the idea, Adeline silently promised to herself that she'd never let Pitch be taken away again either. As he leaned down to kiss her, she kissed him back, hoping she could show what she was feeling. She wanted to do whatever she could to make Pitch feel safe again. Even if he trusted nothing else, he could still trust her.
