"When I kissed you girl, I knew how sweet a kiss could be! Like the summer sunshine, pour your sweetness over me!"
Anna's head bounced and bobbed to the music her ipod as she tapped her feet on the grass and munched away on a bright green apple. She was sitting happily on a slope that led down to the edge of the Antoinette River and reading a book. Normally she would have been down in the lowest level of the BPD building, performing autopsies, declaring causes of death and identifying badly decayed remains. However, as this was her day off she was determined to enjoy it while she had time to pursue whatever hobby or activity struck her fancy in that split second. Today it happened to be enjoying a homemade lunch on the riverfront while reading the new Stephen King book she had bought and listening to her "Sweet Treats" playlist.
"Sugar, du-nu-nu-nu-nu-nuh! Oh, honey HONEY!"
She took another bite from her apple and sang through the fruit, unaware as she always was that her singing was easily loud enough for anyone passing by to hear.
"You are my candy girl! AND YOU GOT ME WANTING YOU!"

The Antoinette River was a place Yang went to often when she needed to get away from the nit and grit of the inner city. More often than not, she brought some kids with her so they could enjoy the fresh air too. But today, she was here on her own. She had been hearing rumors that a serial killer was running around killing kids, and that made her antsy. She was reluctant to let any of her kids leave her hideout, especially once it got dark. Of course, any day in the city could be dangerous, whether a serial killer was running around or not. But still, this particular one was killing kids, and that made Yang's stomach churn with anger and nauseousness. While she was all for kicking somebody's butt and fighting, killing was something she was not a fan of, even if it was necessary. However, her dark, brooding thoughts were interrupted by rather loud singing nearby. She looked over to see that it was a young woman, who was singing to herself while reading a book. Yang couldn't help it and laughed a little. The happy, peppy song seemed to be the exact opposite of the Stephen King book she had in her hands.

Anna had just finished her apple and was waiting for the next song on the playlist to start when she a shadow fall across her from slightly above where she sat. She turned to see a young woman with long blonde hair and violet eyes laughing and Anna suddenly had a good idea what she found so funny.
"Oh, sorry! Was I singing uber loud again? I really need to work on silent singing or maybe humming."
Anna pulled her earplugs out as she spoke, smiling up at the young woman and not the least bit embarrassed that she had been caught singing by a total stranger.

Yang panicked for a split second, thinking maybe the woman might assume that she was making fun of her. But instead, she responded rather cheerfully. She reminded Yang of one of a perky bunny rabbit. "Oh, no, it's fine," she replied. "It wasn't bothersome." She glanced at the book in the woman's hands. She couldn't make out the title, but judging from the picture on the cover, it probably wasn't a happy story. Stephen King stories rarely were. "I'm assuming your book isn't quite as perky as your song," she said, gesturing towards it.

"Hmmm?"
Anna had started to rise to her feet from where she had been seated and didn't immediately see where the young woman was pointing. However, when she mentioned the book, Anna glanced down at the cover before shrugging and grinning.
"Probably not to most people and yet I love reading Mr. King's works to my 'Sweet Treats!' That's my playlist, by the by."
Anna looked down lovingly at the book for a moment, patting the cover as if it were something very precious.
"He's got a wonderful imagination. Always gives me the goosebumps! The skin thing, not the children's books."

Perky music and a horror novel...those weren't two things that usually went hand in hand. But it seemed like the woman seemed to like them together. Heck, Yang wouldn't have even pegged her as a horror fan just by looking at her alone. She seemed more like the person who would be interested in flowers and pretty pink ponies. But, if there was one thing about Bellerouge, it was that looks could be deceiving sometimes. Heck, that was pretty much a rule of the supernatural in general. "I do like a good horror movie now and then," she agreed. "Although I guess these days, all I'm reading is children's books. Helps put little ones to sleep, you know?" Yang's collection of books was small at her hideout, but it was still decent. And sometimes, the only way some of her kids could be put to sleep was if they were read to. Yang didn't mind, though. The kids needed their rest, especially in a place like this. Who knew what might happen.

"Oh, you work with kids?"
Anna seemed to bubble with excitement at the idea and was about to say she worked with kids occasionally as well. However, she suddenly sucked in her lips as she realized what a statement like that, followed with her explanation of her job as a medical examiner, would do to most people. They would be horrified and not in the good just-read-the-new-Stephen-King-novel way. She fumbled for a moment to continue the conversation without bringing up dead kids.
"Are you a babysitter? Teacher? Daycare worker? Mother Theresa reincarnation?"

Yang had to laugh at the idea of her being a Mother Theresa incarnation. "I'm not that good, trust me," she replied. Sure, she looked after kids who were all alone, but she also got into fights often and did some shady things for cash. A Mother Theresa incarnation probably wouldn't do something like that. "I guess you could say, I find kids that don't have a home, or a place to go, and I take 'em in. Some stay forever, others stay for only a few days. Either way, my place is open for them."

"Wow."
Anna looked at the young woman in amazement, wondering at what she said and how someone could have a heart big enough to take in so many kids and look after them. She was fairly certain that if she tried to do something like that, it would end with utter mayhem.
"I don't know too many people who can claim to have a heart as big for kids as it sounds like yours is. Heck, if we weren't talking in the metaphorical sense, I'd say your enlarged heart would burst at any second!"
She gave a laugh at that, unaware that her darker joke might not make much sense to anyone unless they had known her for a long time.

Yang gave another laugh. The woman seemed to think that what Yang did was pretty amazing. Although she wasn't sure what she would think if she knew the details. People tended to get a little worried, or even judgmental, when she said she lived on the streets. "So, what do you do for a living?" she asked. Odds were, she probably enjoyed her job, otherwise, why would she be so happy? Yang knew how bad jobs could bring people down sometimes. She had seen it happen before.

"Oh, I work for the BPD!"
Anna spoke brightly as she started to pick up her possessions and stow them in a bag that had been resting beside her as she relaxed. The bag was in the shape of a large sunflower with two green handles popping out of the top and was big enough to accommodate her horror book, the blanket she had been resting on, and the core of the apple she had been eating wrapped in a paper towel.
"Been working around the clock lately but finally managed to get a day off."

The BPD? Yang bit her lip, looking worried for a moment. She tended to avoid the cops if possible. If they found out she was a 17-year-old girl living on the streets, they'd probably whisk her away to some foster home and stick her there until she was 18. And she did not want that. But the woman seemed awfully nice. Maybe Yang could make an exception for her. Besides, as long as she didn't reveal she was homeless, the woman wouldn't suspect a thing. "Yeah, I guess you have," she replied. "I've been hearing people talk about the...what was he called...the La Llorona killer? Newspapers and online blogs have been going wild with it." Reporters tended to do that, though. Anytime something crazy happened here, they lapped it up like dogs did with a bowl of water.

"Yeah...."
Anna's smile became slightly strained when the young woman brought up the La Llorona Killer. After all, she had only just been examining some of the victim's remains the other day and even though she wasn't the best at keeping morbid subjects out of her conversations, she knew better than to bring up dead children around this stranger who clearly cared deeply for them.
She was just trying to come up with some clever and tactful way to change the subject without being completely obvious when a strange noise issued from her bag, a cross between a light growl and a whistle. Suddenly a small, reptilian head popped out of the bag and looked up at the two woman before making the strange sound again.
Anna's somewhat uncertain grin turned completely natural once more as she gently picked up the chameleon and spoke to him.
"Hey there, Pascal. All done with your nap? Or did you just want the chance to meet......um."
She suddenly gave a silly laugh before looking at the other blonde once more even as she placed the little reptile on her shoulder.
"Sorry, I don't think I ever got your name."

A small squeak interrupted the slightly morbid turn the conversation had taken. Yang was surprised when the woman pulled out a chameleon, of all things. She had never seen one up close. These days, people tended to like furry pets more, like dogs and cats and hamsters. "Oh, I'm Yang," she replied. She realized she had no idea what the woman's name was either. Yang made a mental note to introduce herself sooner when meeting new people. "And your name is..."

"Anna Castille! And this is Pascal!"
Anna pointed to the chameleon before offering an over-the-top bow to the other woman, who she now knew was Yang. Pascal looked at Yang for a moment, his normally crossing eyes focused on her face as he made the strange sound once more. For a moment he did nothing more than stare at her with his large eyes.
Suddenly his tongue shot out of his mouth and, crossing the short distance between them, stuck onto Yang's left arm. His tongue then pulled him from Anna's shoulder to Yang's arm where he stuck his whole mouth onto her.
"Awww, he's giving you kisses! That means he likes you."
