Pitch had expected the woman to make some kind of move to escape, but he had thought it would be more along the lines of striking out at him. However, when she did strike out with a blazing ball of flames, it wasn't at him but the roof that covered the factory. Screams filled the space as pieces of debris rained downwards and even Pitch had to jump hastily backwards, a hand raised over his head as a large metal plate hit the floor where he had been standing.
The woman had taken the chance to launch herself into the air with the force of her fire and had landed somewhat unsteadily on the rim before taking off. Pitch glared up at the hole before calling out to the officers present.
"Keep the situation here in order. I will track and apprehend the escapee."
With that said, the shadows suddenly rushed towards the demon and seemed to consume him as his figure disappeared. On the rooftop, the shadow beneath a cooling unit consolidated before he stepped out of its depths, his eyes immediately landing on the fleeing figure of the woman.
Without hesitating he began to give chase, managing to trail her closely but not closing the distance between them. It was clear that the woman possessed a gift with fire and might even be potentially Other, so it was better to follow closely but not make any attempt to attack just yet. After all, if the woman continued to run it would only be a matter of time before she exhausted herself and became a much easier target to apprehend.
All this ran through Pitch's mind as he lightly ran across the roof, a shadow that was impossible to escape.

As expected, the demon man was right on her tail. Yang cursed mentally all the same though. But, if he wanted to chase her all over the city, then so be it. She couldn't wind up in a cell, not when she had kids waiting for her. She had to be around to look after them. Her fire powers propelled her from one building to the next, but the man was always right behind her when she glanced back. It looked like he had magic to help him out as well, and he seemed just as fast as she was. There had to be a way to lose him. If she could just distract him for one moment, she could find a place to hide and disappear from sight.

Pitch was only several yards behind the woman when he saw an opportunity present itself. They were currently running across another building, but the ground beneath his feet sagged and squealed in protest despite his light step. Clearly the building was decaying and the roof was close to caving in from exposure to the elements.
He took all this in in a split second before throwing his arm forward as he ran, a black wave of sand-like substance shooting out and hitting, not the woman, but the space beneath her feet.
The shadows punched a hole through the roof, causing the support to go out of it and the opening to immediately widen until it reached right where the young woman was running.

Yang didn't see what Pitch was doing until it was too late. Much like how she punched a whole in the roof to escape, he blew a hole in another one to halt her in her tracks. "No, no, no, no!" Her arms flailed as she tried to stop herself, but it was no use. She fell right down the hole, landing inside the building, along with some debris. She coughed, wiping dust off her face as she struggled to her feet. It looked like the building was abandoned, but she wasn't exactly focused on what it looked like. She spun around, trying to spot Pitch. He had to be nearby.

Inside the building, the only light to be seen was that which fell from the opening in the ceiling and illuminated the spot on which Yang had fallen. The rest of the space was filled with nothing but darkness, drippings and shadows. There was the smallest of scurrying as mice fled from the sudden intrusion into their home but otherwise there was no sound besides the moaning of the rotting building.
The shadows seemed to circle on the woman, crawling and slithering just outside the ring of light yet drawing nearer. Pitch was no longer on the roof and had seemingly disappeared, but he was still there. The very air, muggy and hot, seemed to hum with his power. A moment later, his voice seemed to echo from everywhere and nowhere at once as he spoke.
"I didn't want it to have to come to this, but you have made your choice."
Suddenly, something lashed from the shadows behind Yang towards her figure.

Yang might have tried to ignore her fear earlier, but there was no denying it now. She couldn't spot Pitch at all and the shadows were closing in on her. How could she fight the guy if she couldn't see him? She shot a fireball or two, but they only struck the walls of the building. Where was he? One of the shadows lashed out at her, knocking her to her knees. "No, stop!" The cry was desperate. More fire erupted from her hands in a desperate attempt to defend herself. Before she could even think, she blurted out "I have kids to look after! They need me!"

His lash landed soundly, hitting her in her abdomen hard enough to send her to her knees. Pitch didn't give her the chance to get back to her feet before sending out another series of black tendrils, all of which converged on her and immediately wrapped around her upper body, binding her arms to her sides while remaining attached to the surrounding darkness.
Once it was clear she couldn't move an inch, Pitch stepped out of the shadows with his hands once again held behind his back, listening to Yang's desperate plea. He slowly walked right up to her so that they stood level, his own golden eyes starting into her purple.
"You claim you have children to look after? Why should I believe that when you could just as easily be lying as a means to escape justice?"
Pitch was speaking in a calm, quiet voice as he looked at Yang, but he was relying on another sense at that moment to determine if she was telling the truth. He was tasting her fear.

Yang's heart was beating fast as Pitch's dark magic shot out like the tentacles of an octopus. And they were strong. She tried to break free, but she could barely move. Pitch soon came into view, questioning the validity of her plea. She bit her lip. She hadn't even meant to say that. It just sort of came out. She was usually more reserved about her business than that. Usually, the only ones who knew about it were the ones who helped her with it, like Omar or Duncan. Yet here she was, blabbing about it to a member of the BPD. She swallowed, realizing she had no choice but to elaborate, even if she wasn't sure what would happen. Would Pitch show her sympathy? Would he take her kids away from her? She had no idea. "Look, I can show you where our hideout is," she said, a bead of sweat traveling down her face. "It's an abandoned movie theater, at the French Quarter. The kids I look after will be there. They're twins, a boy and a girl. They'll show you I"m telling the truth. But you can't hurt them, okay? You gotta promise me that, or I'm not showing you anything."

Pitch appeared to be listening very closely to Yang's words, but it was with only half an ear. His powers had ventured out around the young woman and were beginning to dig past her mental defenses. Everyone possessed a certain level of protection around their minds and the ease with which he could navigate past those barriers ranged from person to person. Some were as difficult to break through as a steel wall while others were as simple as cracking open an egg. Yang's was stronger than the average person's mind but still offered little challenge to the demon as he penetrated past her barrier and came upon her fears.
His face had remained the same during the whole of Yang's desperate plea and offer, but suddenly his eyes closed slightly for a moment as her fear flooded him. It told him all he needed and verified the truth of her claim.
"There will be no need for such action. I believe you."
Her fear. Her fear hadn't been for herself but for the wellbeing of the children she took care of. It was an unusual fear and one he rarely tasted in people anymore, the fear not for ones own selfish interests, their own safety and wellbeing, but for the lives of others. Even now he could see her terror for the children she spoke of, that without her they would be left to the mercy of a city that didn't care if they lived or died or anything between those two points.

Yang blinked. Pitch believed her? She wondered how. Was it just intuition? She shook the questions away though. This wasn't the time to ask them. The only question she had was: What was Pitch going to do with this information? "So, what are you going to do now?" she asked, trying to keep her voice level.

Pitch frowned at Yang's question but didn't immediately respond. For several long moments, nothing changed as he stood before the trapped young woman and thought over the situation. Finally, his gaze fixated back on her purple eyes and he spoke.
"You are going to release a large burst of fire that temporarily blinds me. By the time my sight returns, you will have disappeared and there will be no trail to follow you. I will return to my fellow officers and inform them of the situation before they begin a short search of the area. They will find nothing to trace you by. Understand?"
He said all of this quietly, making it clear that he was giving her an opportunity to 'escape' the BPD and return to her children so that they wouldn't be left without their protector. However, his last words only offered her a warning.
"Know this. If the BPD find you participating in any more illegal fight rings, then you will be taken in. I have given you one chance, but I will never give anyone a second."

Yang was actually surprised. Pitch was seriously letting her go? She hadn't expected that to happen. He had seem so intent on capturing her earlier. Maybe he had a soft spot? Or maybe she had managed to gain his sympathy on a good night. She didn't really know him well enough to know whether something like this was normal for him. Of course, letting her go came with a catch. If she got caught doing something like this again, she wouldn't be let go again. Yang swallowed. It looked like underground fighting would have to be put on hold for a while as her main source of income. She'd have to find some other ways to make some cash. She'd definitely have to lie low for a few days though, just to make sure that the case surrounding her died down a bit. She wondered if any of her friends who were on the BPD, like Anna or Moses, would hear about this. She had no idea how they'd react. She glanced up, realizing she had been silent for a long time. "Sure. Gotcha," she replied. "Now, how's about letting me loose before these shadow things cut off the blood flow in my arms?" They were still wrapped around her tightly, restraining her better than a pair of handcuffs ever could. Yang hoped other officers didn't have access to these things, or she was going to be screwed.

Pitch didn't even nod his head or move in the slightest way, but the shadows wrapped around Yang did loosen by a small degree. It wasn't much but would give her the space she needed to appear to escape. He looked slightly way from her after that, his mind lost in his own past and a child he had known so many years ago. That had been during a different lifetime for the demon and yet that child had been one of the many things that had led him down his current path to become someone who protected all the beings that called Bellerouge their home.
It was strange to think on how much he had changed. And yet he knew he would never completely escape the deeds of his past. They would be with him forever, just like the shadows he controlled and belonged to.

Pitch didn't exactly say anything in response, but the shadows coiled around Yang's limbs did release her. She let out a breath, looking back at him. He seemed to be thinking about something, but she didn't have the time to ask. Her hands curled into fists as she brought up the fire inside her, ready to let it out. She did have to remind herself that it couldn't be too big of a blast. She didn't want to end up burning Pitch. It just had to be big enough to blind him for a short moment. "Better shut your eyes," she said. Then, without another word, she let out huge burst of fire, enough to encase the room with bright yellow light. Moving fast, she slipped out of the building, hitting the sidewalk at a dead run. Thoughts buzzed in her head at a mile a minute, though. The idea of Pitch sparing her still boggled her mind, and it was making her question her hatred of the police. Would other officers treat her like Pitch had? Some of her friends knew she did illegal things from time to time, but not all of them. Would somebody like Sunshine or Anna let her go if they found her committing a crime? Did this mean that she could trust the BPD a bit more? She shook that thought away. No, she couldn't, no matter how kind some of its members were. She had relied on the force once, years ago, and they had failed her. She wouldn't put that much trust in them again.

Pitch made it clear he head Yang when he turned his back onto her, not worried in the slightest that she would truly try to attack him even now. He heard the roar of flames behind him and felt the heat as a blinding flare filled the space, causing his shadows to disintegrate as the light filled every nook and crevice. He shut his own eyes at the blinding white but heard Yang's footsteps as she dashed out of the building.
For a long time Pitch didn't move. His mind was trapped in the past as he seemed to relive the last few years. No one knew about him or his full story, although some people had guessed at parts of it while others had at least a little knowledge of his life. Still, he had kept most of his past concealed from everyone, even after earning enough trust to join the BPD. He knew it was better to keep those parts of his history in the dark, but it still ate at him sometimes. And in those rarest of moments, he would wonder just for a moment what it was like to be human, to be weak in so many ways and yet strong in others that even a demon couldn't compete with.
All this ran through his mind as he remained motionless, but after nearly fifteen minutes of perfect stillness he knew it was time to return to his fellow officers and report the 'escaped criminal.' However, even as he headed back along the path he had taken through the abandoned factories and storehouses, he somehow knew that this wouldn't be the last time he ran into the blonde fighter.
(End Thread?)
