Aqua got into the office, bright and early, but looking no better rested than she had the day before. She had been out late, talking to Janes and Johns her ex-partner used to harass for protection money. A few of them were glad he was gone, good riddance they said. Aqua tried to share their sentiment but he was her partner and her boyfriend. Someone didn't just vanish in this city without reason. She stopped at Nevermore, falling into an old habit of hers, getting a hot chocolate for herself and a coffee, without even realizing it.
As per her usual ritual, she set the coffee down on her partner's desk. It took her a few seconds to remember, it was still bare, aside from Riku's paperwork. Paperwork which was already filed and filled out in his outgoing box. He was already in the office? Before her? She looked at the coffee in worry, trying to decide whether she should ditch it or just give it to her new partner. Then she sighed. Might as well as give a peace offering. She sat down at her desk to wait for her tall partner to show up.

Riku had already been in the office bright an early to fill out his side of the paperwork. It was tedious but not bad and he decided he would get up early every morning to do it from now on, preferably before his distant partner got there .Maybe she'd be impressed by his hard work. He could only hope. He had gone to the kiosk really quickly to grab a cinnamon bun after he had finished his paperwork. It couldn't have taken more than a couple of minutes but when he got back his partner was there. Riku watched her somewhat warily. He walked over to his desk and was surprised that there was a coffee on it. A peace offering maybe? He looked at her and pointed at it. "Is that for me?" He asked, and then smiled slightly. "Thank you" He picked up his cinnamon role and ripped it in half, Offering Aqua one half. "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" He said.

"Yeah," Aqua said a little sheepishly. "I didn't know how you liked it so it's just black. But, there's creamer and in the break room."
She was a little surprised he broke his cinnamon roll off just to share with her. A polite refusal stuck on her lips. Instead, she found herself smiling rather wearily. The guy was trying. She couldn't fault him for that. The poor guy came in early to do paperwork, something every cop dreaded with a passion. They avoided it if at all possible. Perhaps this guy was just crazy, but Aqua couldn't find it in her to be mean to him. So she reached out and took the offered half of the cinnamon roll. It was from Nevermore's kiosk. They must have passed by each other while she was going in and he was going out.
"Thank you," she said. "As soon as we're finished here, we're going on a little road test, okay? We won't take anything too crazy. Fey's honor."

"I'll get some sugar from the break room" He said with a half smile, appreciating the effort she was giving. She didn't have to get him coffee. They must have passed each other without noticing. Of course, she was so small he wasn't all that surprised. Then again, a lot of people were smaller than he was. He couldn't help but grin. A little road test? Finally! Some real cop work! He tried to reign in his excitement and coughed, smoothing his face into a professional mask. "Where are we going, then?"

Aqua watched him as he went to go get his sugar. She quietly took note that he took sugar in his coffee, no creamer. Her old partner drank it black. She preferred hot chocolate and tea, though with as little sleep as she had been getting lately, she would probably have to make an eventual switch despite her dislike for it. She took a bite of the cinnamon roll. It was a good thing Nevermore wasn't near her house or she would be in trouble with those late nights she was too tired to cook.
"We're going to drive around the riverfront." Aqua said. "You're going to have to pay attention as we drive. Like I said. Road test."
An officer should always know where he was, what street they were on. If not and they got separated from their squad car or partner, it was to help them call for backup. No one liked lost officers.

He returned with two spoonfuls of sugar stirred into his coffee. He sipped on it as he observed his partner ,knowing she was probably observing him. Was it the job that had made her so watchful, or just life? He picked up his cinnamon role and took a bite of it .It was really good. "What do you want me to look out for" He asked after he was done with his bite. He knew this city pretty good. He had grown up here after all, though he had mostly spent all of his time in the rich part of town or with his family but he had tried keeping an eye out for the different streets.

"We're not looking for trouble, just showing you some ropes." Aqua said. "Things should be slow today."
She took another bite of the cinnamon roll. The sweet on her tongue chased down by the warmth of hot chocolate. She realized he was staring so she turned in her desk so she was facing the door, tapping her cup twice. She realized she hadn't finished putting her things away so she pushed her cup aside and pulled out her keys. She unlocked her cabinet draw. From her coat pocket, she retrieved the notebook from the night before. Before any questions could be asked about it, the drawer was sealed with a snap and the book was locked away. She looked back up at him after she finished.
"It's more about knowing your location in and outside of the car. If we get separated on a job and one of us are in trouble, we have to be able to get back together fast. One second makes a lot of difference." she explained. "For you. Or for me."

"Oh, okay" He nodded, feeling a little disappointed they weren't doing more but he was understanding why. He didn't need to be thrown into the deep end, in fact it was probably better that he be allowed to wade into the action slowly. He watched her with that notebook again and wondered once more what was in the notebook that warrant such security on it. However after the chilly reaction to asking to be treated like her partner from last time he remained silent, afraid to speak up and get another non-answer. "That makes a lot of sense"

"Don't look like I kicked your dog," Aqua teased. "If there's a collar I think you can handle we'll take it."
She finished the last of her cinnamon roll and hot chocolate. Her hands were cleaned by a clean napkin she was given for the drinks. She swept her trash into the can by her desk. She took a deep breath. She could be nice but not be close to him, right? That's what she kept telling herself. Aqua's heart probably couldn't handle another lost partner. Losing a second one would make her retire early.
"You can bring the coffee with us but don't spill it in my car." She said with a smile.

He smiled sheepishly. Had he been that obvious? However he did brighten a bit at her promise and nodded happily. He could handle anything she deemed him capable of handling. Riku was greatly appreciating the kindness that she was showing. And the little bit of friendliness. It was a nice change to the previous day. He nodded and motioned for her to lead the way as he grabbed his coffee and held it tight. "No spills. got it" he said with a nod.

Aqua shook her head, fighting back laughter. The tables had turned on her. She had been the excited officer just a few years ago. She grabbed her keys, readjusted her jacket and made sure her tie was in place. Side arm was strapped in and badge was next to it. No putting this off. She had a ride along to teach. She stopped just short of the garage where all the other cars were stored and cast a smile over her shoulder.
"You spill and you're cleaning my car with a tooth brush, you hear?" she threatened.

"Which is why I'll be careful" He laughed. This was a marked improvement from the previous day. She seemed much happier and a little nicer than before and he appreciated it. It seemed her night had gone relatively well to show this improvement. "Hey, thanks for being my mentor partner" He said before she showed him her car. "I really appreciate you giving me a chance"

"Don't mention it," Aqua replied.
Really she had no choice but to take him on. If she didn't, the chief would have put her on desk duty until she got a partner. It almost made her feel bad because he wasn't her first choice in partner, just the quickest method of getting away from desk duty and paperwork. She let Riku into the garage and led him to her squad car - the one she had shared with her partner prior. Though, he never let her drive, insisted that it was his car. Aqua didn't care about driving either way but since Riku was still learning, she would wait before putting him in the driver's seat. She stopped at the car, popped the locks and before she got inside she looked up at him.
"You watch my back and I'll watch yours," she told him.

He nodded. "Of course. We're partners" The thought of running at the first sign of danger had never even crossed his mind. He wasn't going to leave Aqua high and dry at the first sign of danger. That wasn't the kind of person he was. Riku slid into the passenger seat and held his cup of coffee tightly so as not to spill it anywhere. He also took a large gulp of it to minimize the amount to lessen the chance of any spilling while they were driving. He really didn't want her yelling at him for spilling in her car and the thought of cleaning the car with toothbrush was slightly intimidating. "So, the riverfront today?"

Aqua sighed to herself before getting in but she managed to keep a smile on her face. After taking a breath she began to explain where things were in her - their - car. Her car, much like her desk, was neat and orderly. Obviously broken in but still in near factory-like conditions. Minus the new car smell. She had too many arrests for it to keep that.
"There's a first aid kit under both of our seats. Crime scene kits are in the trunk along with my rifle." She said. "Rain gear, flares, spare ammo, our visibility gear and bullet proof vests are in the trunk too. In the glove box there's a flashlight, spare batteries and emerged provisions."
The interior was like any other car, minus the CV radio and button for the sirens. Aqua glanced over at him after she finished explaining. She wasn't sure of what sort of reaction to expect from him. Awe? Fear? Excitement? Confidence? What had her partner seen in her? She wondered.
"That's right. Buckle up." She told him. "And there is a cup holder if you want to use it. Lift the console between our seats."
