Aqua sighed after she finished the last of her paperwork. She glanced to the clock. It was late. She was starving. They hadn’t stopped all day. Now she realized why a lot of cops lived on takeout and fast food. It was going to kill her to do the same. Perhaps on her days off she would have to cook up a storm and prepare for the week so she could just nuke it and go. However, tonight she wasn’t going to have the energy to cook once she got home. She looked over at her partner, who seemed to be finishing up just about when she was. He threw his pencil down and scrubbed a hand over his face.
"All done," she announced.
"Same here." He said. "Quick. Grab your jacket. We’re getting out of here before they decide to make us do more."
Not needing to be told twice, Aqua grabbed her jacket and slung it on over her uniform. The two dashed out the door as soon as they clocked out, briskly saying goodbye to coworkers but not staying for any lengthy conversation. If they stayed longer, someone would have found something for them to do. After their hasty escape, Aqua looked over at Terra. It wasn’t long before they both burst into laughter. Okay, so it was kind of funny that they both fled like a pack of vampires were behind them, but paperwork was the bane of every cop’s existence.
"C'mon, let’s go grab a bite. My treat." Terra said.
"Huh?"
"Dinner. You. Me. I’m buying," Terra explained.
Terra led her to his car, his personal car, not their squad car. He had to open the door for her because it was not their custom car. He didn’t seem to mind. Now that they had talked about how Terra had low functionality without coffee, Aqua had taken to bringing coffee from Nevermore with her on her way into work. Black, no sugar. Terra had at first been wary but now he had grown dependant on it since it was much better than what the station provided. He woke up faster and was less grumpy, faster. Actually, when he wasn’t dead on his feet, Terra was pretty nice, Aqua decided.
She almost asked where they were going but then again she was trying to prove to him she trusted him so she kept her mouth shut. Terra pulled out of the parking lot. Aqua noticed that he was tapping a rhythm on his steering wheel. Was it a song? Or was it just a pattern? She didn’t want to embarrass him. It was another thing to keep silent about. Terra pulled into the parking lot of a tiny diner. Aqua looked up at her partner quite quizzically. She had never been to this little mom and pop restaurant. She liked little chains like this but was this where he wanted to take her? Terra grinned. He got out of the car and walked around to let her out.
"This place has the best milkshakes." Terra told her.
"The best? We’ll have to see about that." She laughed.
"If you didn't get one I'd be offended."
"You're lucky I’m not lactose intolerant then," she replied.
“If you were we couldn’t be partners," Terra replied with a grin.
Aqua rolled her eyes and walked up to the diner, stalking ahead so she didn’t have to be by Terra but her partner quickly reached around her when she got to the door. He hurriedly grabbed the door handle before she could open the door herself. He had all but knocked her hand out of the way to do so. She looked up at him, alarmed, wondering if he had noticed something bad happening and they both had to act like they were on duty. He cleared his throat when he realized he had startled her. He wouldn’t look at her as he opened the door wide, motioning for her to enter.
"It's uh, it's iron." He said hastily.
"Oh!"
He had saved her from burning herself on the door handle. Not once but three times already, the two times she got in and out of his car and now as she was heading into the diner. It still felt weird to have him open doors for her. She went inside; trying to brush off the weird feeling it left her with. After being seated, they sat in an awkward silence. Both of them had their noses buried in their menus until the waiter came over and took their order and their menus. They had no choice but to look at one another since they had nothing to hide behind.
"Hope you don't mind but I ordered a garlic fries as an appetizer." Terra said.
"It's fine."
"Good. You're going to help me eat it," He said, "The vampires won't be bothering you tonight."
Aqua rolled her eyes. She hadn’t dealt with a vampire yet, but she doubted that garlic breath was going to scare them away that easily. Vampires were and weren’t a problem in a city like this. Some obeyed the laws, avoided eating from humans, or found humans who volunteered to ‘give blood’ whereas other vampires took what they wanted by force. Aqua’s luck, she would run into the later rather than the former. And the worst garlic breath would do is probably be to annoy them.
"My old partner used to bring me here," Terra told her. "Ordered garlic fries, a chocolate milkshake and a burger every single time like clockwork."
Aqua looked up at him in surprise. If that was true, then this was special to the both of them, like a little secret reward after a hard day of work. Now that Terra had brought her here then… it was now her and Terra’s place to go. He was moving past his old partner’s tradition and extending it to her. She wasn’t sure what her partner was trying to accomplish by telling her this. This was really personal. It left her feeling a little uncomfortable especially since they were talking about his dead ex-partner. Aqua shifted a little in her seat. This was getting to be a little more than she could stomach, especially talking about the poor dead officer.
"Hey, you better help me eat these before they get cold," Terra said.
"Right!"
