"He... was my last partner. His name was Terrance Nobel."
Aqua deflated a little. Riku wanted a transfer. She didn't want to lose another partner. Not so soon after the last one left. So much for her supposed natural disposition to bring good luck to those around her. So far, it seems all she had caused was hurt. She never wanted to make Riku feel uncomfortable around her. But this wasn't about her or her feelings. She had upset him. That alone made her feel like the scum of the earth. She had been so focused on the past she forgot about the present and the people there with her then.
"I'm trying," Aqua said, feeling her voice crack as she spoke. "You have to understand this isn't easy for me. Could you... Give me one more chance? If you're still not happy with me as your partner, I'll sign off on your transfer myself."

"Terrance Nobel....Alright, thank you" if she didn't want to tell him more about this Terrance Nobel, maybe he could ask about him with someone else later.
Riku looked down miserably. He didn't want to hurt Aqua but there it was. He seemed to hurt her every time he opened his mouth or did a simple action. It was terrible. He just couldn't take being the one that kept hurting her, nor could he be the one that kept being boxed into her partner's old role. He held up a finger. "If you stop expecting me to act like Terrance, then I'll give it another shot" He smiled and extended the hand out to her in a handshake. "Deal?"

"Deal." she said.
She reached out and shook his hand. This was it, she decided, she wanted nothing more to do with Terra. She was going to let go once and for all. She almost ruined a new partnership over him. She silently swore to herself to throw away the notebook that she had kept in her desk side drawer when they got into the office tomorrow. It still wasn't easy talking about him. It felt raw and too much to bear at the moment but she had to salvage what partnership she had with Riku. He was a nice man and a good officer. Aqua knew she could do so much worse in the luck of partners.
"It's not that I want you to act like Terra." she said softly, "This situation reminds me of when I was the rookie and he was my mentor, except now I'm the mentor, you see? I was never angry with you. Just sad."

He shook her hand firmly with a hint of a smile. Finally they were getting somewhere. He let go of her hand after a long moment and nodded. "I guess I understand, you were close and you missed him right? And you're filled with nostalgia over being a rookie or something similar. But if we're going to be partners I need you to bring your A Game to the table. I want to do well, and I want to do well with you" He took a deep breath. "So let's do well together and forget about being sad while we're working, okay?" A difficult request he knew but he had faith she could do it.

Aqua nodded. She took a deep breath, smoothed a hand through her hair. She had to stop talking about her ex-partner if she really wanted to start trusting Riku more. Let go. She had to move on and forget about Terra once and for all. He wasn't coming back. He wasn't calling. He was gone. She smiled the best she could at her partner.
"Let's start over." she said. "Riku, why don't you tell me about yourself?"
She knew bits and pieces. His family didn't approve of his job choice. He used voodoo magic, which she actually wouldn't mind seeing considering the fact they both had some similar magical capabilities regarding luck, charms and other white magics. She also knew that he was going to have his first milkshake once the food was brought to them. Considering that she could see their waitress carrying at tray to their table, it would be soon. She was correct as plates were then placed on their table.

"Well..." He rubbed the back of his head and looked up at the ceiling. An old fan swayed lazily over head and he hastily looked away from that and back to Aqua. "I don't really like talking about it but" He shrugged. "My family is a very old, very powerful Voodoo family from around here. I'm a LaFayette. Anyway, I was always the black sheep of the family. I wanted to be a cop, not a voodoo priest. I wanted to help people with more than just magic. So my family disowned me" He sighed. "Haven't heard a word since I started academy and they cut ties. I gave up literally everything to become a cop" He rubbed his hands when his food came and looked over at Aqua. "Want to tell me a little about yourself?"

"There's... Not much to say about me. My parents were killed in a car accident when I was five. I was placed in an orphanage after that. Eventually I aged out." Aqua said.
The little orphan Faery no human could ever adopt. By the time she learned magic to hide her appearance, she was too old for any family to want. They want children small, impressionable and cute. Aqua had been none of the above. With wings too large for her body, wide eyed and questioning everything and with her eyes, ears and wings, she didn't fit the normal standards of human beauty. When it came to Others, they tended to either adopt like kin or their own species.
"I'm sorry about what happened with your family." She said sincerely.

He shrugged. There really wasn't much to be done about his family. They were set in their ways and he was determined to choose another path "I'm sorry about what happened to you as well" And he was sincerely sorry about it. He could guess that this appearance that he was seeing wasn't her real appearance and he supposed it would be a while before she was comfortable showing someone like him her true appearance. And that was fine, he was okay with waiting. "My aunt left me a small fortune before she died and before I was disinherited" He explained with another shrug. "I've been living off that so I've been alright. Sometimes I miss my family but Overall I'm happy with the choice I made"

"I'm glad you're here too," she said.
She sincerely meant it. Talking with Riku, though this talk was painful as all get out, was helping her more than she felt that he knew. Rather than get all sentimental on the poor man, she reached out and added some of the garlic fries to her plate. If Riku wasn't going to share with her, she would just take them home after they were done eating. Talking about her feelings wasn't easy for her, not as of late, especially now and not on an empty stomach. This talk was going to be quite draining on her.
"It's okay to miss them. They were your family." she said.

He smiled slightly at her. "Thanks Aqua" He settled into a silence and didn't come out of it until she added some garlic fries to her plate .After a moment Riku did the same. He wondered if they would go well at all with an omelette. "Yea. I dunno, I guess I thought they would be happy for me. But it was just wishful thinking on my part" His sister had been absolutely outraged and he supposed in a way he couldn't blame her. Riku tried a taste of the milkshake and grinned. That was really good! Cold but good!

"If they knew you half as well as they pretended to your choice shouldn't have shocked them." Aqua replied.
She smiled though, when she caught the expression on his face after he tried his milkshake. The little diner did have great milkshakes. The best part was, they were off the beaten path so not many people knew to go there. The placed had just enough business to keep it busy but not too crowded. She was starting to feel a little better now.
"So, best milkshake ever?" she teased.

"I don't think it shocked my parents. Just angered them. As though becoming a voodoo king is the most important thing in the world" He said, slightly bitterly. It was surprisingly easy to recount his family. He just hadn't expected to leave him feeling so angry and bitter. He coughed lightly and looked at Aqua. "Can we uh, change the subject?" He asked politely, no trace of bitterness or anger left in his voice. He nodded at her question. "Ive never had something this good before" He enthused.

As interesting as the subject was, it upset her partner. Because really, voodoo King? Was this just a title or was Riku part of a royal line? Aqua couldn't bear to cause him more discomfort so she dropped it. He hadn't gone chasing after much more about Terra so she shouldn't push too much until he trusted her more. And maybe someday when her heart had healed entirely, she would tell him the full story about Terra.
"Used to come here all the time. Really it was for special occasions, big cases won, birthdays, you know. But next time, you get to pick where we go." Aqua said. "I didn't want to go to the bar just yet... I sort of arrested Omar LaRue for a bar fight..."

"Seems like the sort of place that you would do that sort of thing" he agreed. "It's not expensive really but it's special. I like it a lot" He paused and shook his head. "No, we can come here next time, I like it" He raised an eyebrow at the little tidbit of information and smirked. "So...he sort of hates you right now, doesn't he? Yea ,I don't think he's ever been a fan of cops. Not since his family's murders went cold case..." as soon as those words left his lips Riku winced. He probably shouldn't have said that to be honest. Only close fans and the band knew about the family.

"Yeah, he hates - wait," Aqua said, dropping her fry. "His family's murder went cold?"
That was something Aqua could not stand for. Cold cases were lazy detective work to her. Someone had obviously done the crime and the family was the one to pay the time if the killer was never caught. She looked down at her plate. Her usual food didn't seem as appealing now that she had this information on her mind. She poked at her burger with the fry she had picked back up. No wonder he had disliked her from the start, and why he seemed so much more comfortable around the timid little sketch artist who's only crime in his book was association with police officers. She bit her lip and looked back up at her new partner.
