Dusk was when shit began getting real. Shadow and the blonde girl, who was humming ‘You are My Sunshine’ to herself that he decided he might as well call her ‘Sunshine’, spent the entirety of the day looking for means of escape. The ball Shadow was in was impenetrable, even from the outside when Sunshine, who walked as far as her shackle chains would allow her to scoot, kicked it. The rebound sent her wiggling her foot like it had fallen asleep, but the expression on her face said otherwise.
“So, when did vampires become good at force fields?” she asked.
“Hell if I know,” Shadow muttered.
The banter was cut off by a laugh that no one could imitate. It was a laugh that sounded like a hyena on helium combined with a clichéd wicked witch laugh from the movies. They seemed to just float into the room, even floating as they approached them both. They all looked the same; dark hair, pale skin, but the one thing that broke the mold was that they all wore white…white with splotches of red. No question where the red had come from.
The giggler, who was shorter than the other two, leered down at Sunshine. “Apparently gagging you wasn’t going to shut you up. It was only a matter of time,” he nodded in Shadow’s direction, “the coppers were going to show. Funny how one cop goes down after a hit.”
Shadow clenched his fists. A hit? It felt more like five hits. But then again, he had yet to really show them how tough his chaos powers were. Or, maybe they did know considering he was stuck in an invisible ball of glass. He punched the said wall, and much like it did with Sunshine, it sent him flying back with his fist throbbing in pain. A female vampire tittered, her cat like eyes shifting into a dangerous shade of brought yellow and her teeth lengthening as she walked over to the sprawled shadow. Her mocha colored skin stroked the ball lovingly as if she were petting a cat.
“Funny how vampire magic increases with darkness,” she taunted. Shadow wanted to smack the fanged grin off her face.
The pretty vampire slithered away to join the other two. The giggling vampire had left Sunshine’s face go, instead running his fingers through her hair. As if him touching her face wasn’t gross enough. Sunshine made a quick wiggle as his hand came close to the hair on the nape of her neck, shaking free and scowling at the vampires.
“Knock it off!” Fear wavered in her boldness, “you’ve been doing this for the last two days!”
Shadow’s ears pricked up, temporarily blocking the pain from hitting the wall. She had been stuck in Thorn Manor for two days. There had been a missing person’s call at the station before the Others had been sent to investigate the Ombre. He may not have found the Ombre, but he did find the missing person. Tough sacrifice, but one life was a good start. Wincing, the black hedgehog managed to stand up with one arm against his injured fist.
“Leave her alone.” The vampires all turned with their fangs wide and hissing, obviously pissed that he interrupted a meal slash sexual harassment. At least it hadn’t become a bit and run. “You locked up the wrong cop.” Sure, wincing amid talk wasn’t going to convince them, but Shadow knew the vanity of vampires could be an easy thing to play. “How about a little wager? These,” he gestured casually to the red metal encasing his jets, “are the combined speeds of a werewolf and a vampire. Which basically means I’m faster than you.”
The giggler let out his insane laugh. “Faster than a vampire. We’ll just prove it. But, you said this a wager…what did you have in mind?”
“Our freedom,” Shadow answered, narrowing his eyes. “I beat you and your gang in a race, and you let me and the girl go.”
The fanged grins widened. “Jasmine, let our little red and black friend out,” the giggler demanded the pretty girl. “Then escort him to the garden. We can see it play there.”
Moonlight normally made things look beautiful. But the puddle of white light only twisted the weeds and roots of overgrowth into more knots. Uncannily, some of them looked like knobs of hair. The giggler vampire was waiting as Jasmine dragged Shadow to the edge of an ungroomed path.
“Several laps,” the giggler declared, “no more than two. We stay on the path and avoid contact with each other. Does that seem fair?” After he saw Shadow’s curt nod, the sucker knelt down into a crouching position. Shadow copied his motion. Jasmine made a hideous howl – which was the signal to go.
Fire was shot out from Shadow’s jets as he willed them to ignite. The kinetic energy of his taking off and the flames forced him out onto the rocks. The glide started out easy, just an easy straight way path. But then, Shadow saw the path was sabotaged. A truck, which was in no way placed there before, sent him careening into the grass. But before he fell out of bounds, he willed the fire to send back more kinetic energy. The kick put him back onto the right path. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the giggler gaining on his path as he glided in front. Shadow made a sharp left, nearly clipping an ungroomed edge, sending leaves flying amid the yellow streak he was leaving behind. Shortcuts might have been cheating, but they brought dirty fighting into it by planting that truck. He made leaps and bounds over rubble, over branches, and over cracks. It wasn’t until he passed the bench that acted as the marker for the finish line that he realized the vampires had more in mind than just leveling the track to be in their favor.
Next thing Shadow knew, he was being tossed aside like a rag doll. The high pitched laugh gave away who it was that pushed him. Shadow gritted his teeth, and rolled himself tightly; well, he was a hedgehog, and if this fast rolling spikeball wasn’t a quick way back onto the track, it wasn’t worth the risk. His spikes met the ball of a foot, and all he heard to confirm he hit a mark was a shriek. Shadow uncurled from the ball, resuming his typical skate glide. No sooner was he turning the left bend that he felt fingers dance along his spikes. He swatted forward, releasing five yellow bolts; his chaos spears. The blasts of energy narrowly missed the running target going through smoke and fog. The giggler was now sprinting towards him at full speed, fangs outspread. To avoid any kind of bite, Shadow sidestepped. He felt a heat against his wrists and ankles. His inhibitor rings were getting the sense his chaos was going to overheat any second and were buckling down to avoid anything bad. He saw his black fur was beginning to turn red. Just give him a few more minutes, and he could unleash the blast that had started ever since that trip up. They would know what it was to race the ultimate creation, an ultimate form of whatever Other he was. But before he could let it lose, a foot swept him from his run, sending him skidding onto the ground and off the path…his nose literally at the feet of Jasmine.
“Pity,” she clicked her tongue. “If you hadn’t cheated, we would have considered your offer.”
“Cheated?!” Shadow was up now, the blood and chaos in his veins flowing quickly. “You were the ones who rigged the race!”
The giggler shook his head, his smile making the powers in Shadow run cold. “A deal’s a deal. I win, which means…you’ll be with us for a long while now. Your speed impressed me, I must admit. But even more impressive,” he gestured to the inhibitor rings. “How much power is being held back? Jasmine, change of plans. We’ll tell her that we found an Other with so much potential.”
“So, when did vampires become good at force fields?” she asked.
“Hell if I know,” Shadow muttered.
