Both cops communicated in stares and head gestures. Chat and Shadow working together? The mixup would have been like water and oil. But no, Chat had proven himself worthy by telling them the truth. He may have been working outside the law, but every intention he had was good.
Sunshine was about to ask what going on, but the urgency in Chat's voice brought her attention. He had managed to work open a lock in Vanitas's desk. Dust has settled, and where he swiped left a dark circle.
Sitting before them in Chat's Palm was a BPD badge. Not just BPD badge, an Other's Unit badge, highlighted by the gargoyle imposed on the star. Blood had been smudged on the medallion. Sunshine gasped, Shadow just had one thing to say;
"Shit."
Shit indeed. Terra had been a member who left the force, hurting Aqua. His disappearance had been unsolved. There were no clues as to what happened..until now.

Chat exhaled slowly. He set he badge on the desk and reopened the drawer. There was a thick unlabeled file. He opened it. Pictures of a woman with blue hair and a man with brown hair. Vanitas was pretty much stalking her and Terra it had seemed. But why? The most important question was why was he doing this? Chat looked again to the badge, stained with a blood that had long since gotten crusty and if they washed the badge, he was sure the mark would linger.
What did this mean for this Terra Nobel? Was he hurt? Was he dead? Had Vanitas stolen the badge? Found it? What did he know? Chat glowered at the badge before putting it exactly as he found it, along with the file. Sapien and Terra. Were they involved? Either way this certainly took a turn that even Chat was unprepared for. Especially as both Shadow and Sunshine looked at the badge like seeing a ghost.
"We have to put this back." he said. "We should get out before Vanitas gets back. We can talk once we're outside and away. He'll freak if he realizes someone was in here."

Sunshine and Shadow were silent as Chat pulled out the folder. The pictures were of their colleague Aqua. This brown haired, blue eyed cop was a stranger to Sunshine, but Shafow recognized him. They had never spoken, him and Terra, but he did recognize him. He said nothing, just looking away to study the barrels.
Sunshine, on the other hand, grabbed her phone set to camera mode. "I want to take shots of the evidence. Taking it out of Vaniras' hands will get him pissed off more than he is at the cops."
"Good idea," Shadow said. He was shaken. Aqua and him had talks about her partner disappearing. To her, he was much more. He had been something closer. His disappearance was somewhat answered. It had to do with Vanitas.
As Sunshine snapped pictures, he peeked out, expecting the black clad demon. Nothing so far. "Sunshine, you hurry up. He could be here any minute."
"Just one more..." She said, peeking to the Sapien warehouse and snapping a shot of the crate. "Got it."

"Okay, once you get what you need, you two go out front, get the car out of here." Chat insisted. "I'll lock all the doors we opened behind me. We can meet back up at the old water tower down the street."
He had to cover their tracks. Nothing should be out of place from when they came in or when they left. The further Sunshine was away from this place, the better. Shadow would make sure that Sunshine was safe, so that was naturally a good thing. It was actually rather interesting how protective the brooding officer was of the little ball of energy that was his female partner. He opened the front door for them, making sure to only use the latex part of the second pair of gloves. No finger prints. No tracing.

"Got it," Sunshine nodded. Her camera clicked once last time, snapping the boxes of Sapien.
Shadow gave an approving nod. The clock was ticking. They had to get out of here without getting caught. The half moon looked orange in the red sky. It was taunting them, shifting ever slightly to count down. After he saw it shift, he gently grabbed Sunshine's hand and led her out.
The doors were still unlocked that they ran through. Chat said he'd close it behind them. The last time they raced with the moon was two years ago. But now, the means of escape wasn't tampered.
"Shadow..." Sunshine stammered as she climbed into the car.
"Don't worry. I've got your back. Just drive to the water tower like Chat said!"
The black hedgehog took his jets to the street. No sooner had he took off that he was just a red and black blur, sparking at the end. Sunshine revved her engine, pulling out carefully, and driving to follow her speeding partner. They stuck to the backstreets, only swerving out to catch a main road that led to the water tower.

Chat waited until they were clear of the door before hastily locking it. He then traced their steps, making sure everything looked exactly as it was supposed to. It was how he got in and out of places unnoticed after all. No one noticed anything was missing until it was far too late to do anything about it. As much as he wanted to grab the bloodied badge and find the rightful owner they couldn't. It was the worst thing a thief like him should ever encounter - something he couldn't steal because it would make things worse.
He shook his head and hurried through the building, everything was left exactly as it was, even the door he locked on his way out on the roof. He then scaled the rooftops, leaping from building to building until he got to the top of the old water tower. Sunshine and Shadow beat him there, but that was to be expected. He carefully climbed down the side of the tower, stopping when he was in front of Sunshine's cruiser.

As Sunshine locked the car and Ahadow cooled his jets, the shadowed figure of Chat could be distinguished scaling the tower. Well, higher ground it was. They both scaled the ladder; Shadow with his chaos teleportation by holding Sunshine's hand to get up to meet Chat.
"Too close," Sunshine panted.
"Well, we got more evidence than we hoped." Shadow looked back over at the way they came. "Evidence on a case we thought was dead."

"A cold case?" Chat asked in surprise. "So... Terra Nobel? What's going on behind that?"
Chat had only just started terrorizing the rich and corrupt. Never in his line of work had he run into Terrance or his partner. It did concern them the amount of information the demon had on the pair. He removed the latex gloves from his hands in disgust. So close. They could have nailed that demon with the amount of evidence they had. But... It was probably for the best. A demon like that was one you had to put down because he wouldn't stop. Not until there wasn't a breath in his body. A beryl bullet or a blessed blade to the heart could stop a demon for good.

Both cops looked at each other. Was Chat really trustworthy enough to know about a case that was strictly confidential? Aqua would be livid if a thief got tangled up in a case that was so personal. Wha could they say without giving away too much?
"Let's just say the answer was right under our noses the whole time," Shadow growled in frustration. "We'd say more, but we don't want to get more people hurt."

They weren't exactly entirely forth coming with information. This was all stuff Adrien could look up himself, find the answers to on his own. It would have been easier if they had just been honest, but if they didn't want to get people hurt then... At least they had a good reason. Whatever the reason that Vanitas had that badge, it was not good. Blood was the most severe indicator of that. Even as a thief, Chat knew you simply did not take a BPD officer's badge. One, it was common courtesy and he wouldn't do it, but two, they would rather die than give up the badge. He just wanted to assist in any way possible.
"So then... Sapien?" he asked. "What's a demon like him doing with a drug like that?"
No good was an obvious answer. Chat was well aware of Vanitas' position as an information broker. He occasionally tipped the police off to things, but only if doing so was in his favor, like taking out competition. The demon was as cut throat as they came and would probably sell his own family if it meant getting out of doing time in prison. He also had a criminal record full of charges that were dropped, whether because the person accusing him of the crime was too afraid to testify or they went missing.

"That," Sunshine answered, "is a very good question, Chat"
Shadow just looked out over the horizon. "Vanitas plus Sapien is a bad equation. My guess is he wants it to wear out any Other rivals." His red eyes narrowed. "Dirty even for him."

"I... guess I wouldn't put it past him. It makes sense in a messed up sort of way," Chat said.
Still... to resort to Sapien? He shook his head. That sounded horrible. Drugging his enemies to strengthen his own hold on the city. Chat was going to have to try harder to stop him. He had these drugs, he was stalking a police officer, had the bloodied badge from another and he had helped the guy who hurt Yang get away. All of this was pretty unforgivable. A guy like Vanitas was too dangerous to be left alone.

"Pft, messed up is the nice version," Shadow scoffed. He had come from these very streets, had seen the dirt and grit people did to stay alive. Sapien was basically the same as euthanasia in some cases. But since he had no idea what sort of other he was - and hedgehog person was getting old even for him - he did not want to risk any of it. "But," he nodded to Chat, "I'm glad someone's looking out for the little people."
"Little people...you mean the kids..." Sunshine mused. It was obvious who he was thinking about. She had only seen Shadow show a sort of parental viewpoint only once, and that was with her when she was a rookie.
"Yeah. She and her little gang are all alone out there."

The moment he mentioned 'little people' and 'kids' Chat thought of Yang and the kids she looked after. If the drug somehow found it's way at Yang's doorstep... Chat shuddered to think what would happen. But there were plenty of 'kids' on the street who had it rough while Adrien Agreste sat in his mansion eating Prime Rib and wine every night. It was beyond frustrating for the thief. A drug like that impacting the city would lead to mass chaos. It's probably what the demon wanted.
"Uh, who are we talking about here?" Chat asked.

"A girl who take care of street kids," Shadow answered. "She helped us out of a bad predicament. And we helped her in return at the ball." Oh god, the ball. There was no way his amnesia could touch that. How he rushed headlong to knock back Thrax upon seeing Yang and that dark girl cornered. How she had fallen through the ceiling unconscious and was helped out by her friend. "And by the Peter Pan law, she's safe. At least, safe from cops who actually pay attention to the law."
