Yang let out her millionth sigh that night as she walked down the street, her hands clenching and unclenching at her sides. She had finally taken Moses’s advice and had signed up to do a completely legal fight. Apparently, quite a bit of cash was being offered to whoever could survive five minutes with this big-shot wrestler guy, and even more to anyone who could beat him. And while being under eighteen raised a few eyebrows, it wasn’t entirely discouraged, so Yang had been given the approval to enter the contest. She just hoped this turned out well. She hadn’t fought in a while and was worried that she was rusty.
“Yang Xiao Long?”
Yang whipped her head at the sound of her name. A girl stepped out from an alley, with hair that was surprisingly green. And it looked natural.
She’s gotta be a nymph or something, Yang thought. "Yeah?“
The girl let out a sigh of relief. "Finally. I’ve been looking for you all night. Do you ever stay in one place?”
“Do I know you?” Yang asked, raising an eyebrow. This girl didn’t seem familiar at all.
“No, but you know my boss,” the girl replied. "You might have seen her attending some underground fights in the past. Does Cinder Fall ring a bell?“
Yang’s eyes narrowed. She hadn’t met Cinder in person, but she knew the name. She ran a gang called the Elementals, and was comprised of people who controlled any of the four elements: air, water, earth, and fire. Like most crime bosses, she liked to wager money, and what better place to spend it than an underground fight? Yang, however, wasn’t very impressed by her. In fact, she detested her. If there was one thing she hated as much as the police, it was gangs.
"She wants to talk to you,” the girl continued. "If you’ll just follow me-“
"Why?” Yang asked, her tone slightly hostile. "What does she want from me?“
"She’d prefer to tell you that herself,” the girl answered, her red eyes locking with Yang’s purple ones.
Yang sighed. It looked like she didn’t have much choice in the matter. She followed the girl into the alley, where sure enough, Cinder was waiting. Some of her brown hair rested in front of her face, but they couldn’t hide the golden tint of her eyes. Rumor had it that she could cut through people with those eyes, without even having to use her fire powers. Yang refused to feel intimidated though.
“Thank you very much, Emerald,” Cinder said, smiling at the green-haired girl walked to her side. Then, she looked up to address Yang. "Yang, so good to see you. I’ve missed seeing you in the ring.“
"Well, last time I was in the ring, I nearly got busted,” Yang replied. "I’m playing it safe for now. I’m sure you’ll understand.“
"Of course.” Cinder’s voice was cool and even. "I know better than anyone else how messy things get when the police are involved.“
"So, what do you want?” Yang asked, crossing her arms over her chest. "I assume you didn’t want to talk to me just ‘cause you missed me.“
Cinder gave a soft chuckle. "No, there is something else I wanted to ask you.” She brushed her hair out of her eyes. "We’re looking for someone, and I think you’re just the right person to help us. Have you heard of a theif named Chat Noir?“
Yang’s eyes widened. Cinder was looking for Chat? What did she want with him? She said nothing, but she didn’t need to. Her expression was answer enough for Cinder.
"As I thought. We’ve been looking for him for some time. He had the audacity to rob my place about a month ago. Made off with quite a few jewels, and a vase that was quite valuable.” She looked at Yang, her expression totally serious by this point. "You two seem to be quite close. Has he mentioned anything about a hideout, a place where he stays when he’s not thieving? Any information would be very helpful to us.“
Yang’s hands curled into fists. Was Cinder serious? Did she think she would really rat out Chat like this? She obviously didn’t know her very well.
"He hasn’t mentioned anything about a hideout,” she replied, which was the truth. "I just know him as Chat, nothing more, nothing less.“
Cinder didn’t seem very happy about that answer. Her eyes narrowed, and she took a step towards Yang. "Are you sure about that?” she asked. "I want you to think carefully, Yang. This cat burglar has to be shown that he can’t mess with us and get away with it. If your information is helpful, you get a nice pat on the back. If you help us lead to his capture, you'll get an ever greater reward.“ She reached into her pocket and pulled out a wad of cash. "I’m sure you could do with a few extra bucks, what with the cops breathing down your neck. What do you say?”
Yang’s blood boiled at that statement. "If you think I’d rat out a friend for something like money, you must really think I’m stupid,“ she snapped. "I don’t know anything, and even if I did, I wouldn’t tell someone like you!”
Emerald gasped. She had never seen somebody talk to Cinder like this before. She looked at her boss, who simply sighed as she put the money back in her pocket.
“I’m sorry to hear that,” she said. "I guess we’ll just have to move to Plan B.“ She suddenly looked up towards the roof of a building nearby. "Mercury, now!”
“Huh?” Yang spun to the right, and only had time to gasp as a boy with silver hair came flying down from the rooftop. His foot slammed into her head, and everything went black.
“Yang Xiao Long?”
