Moses was walking in the twilit, wet street from work and munching on a pastry from there as he did so. He was having a good day. He’d been tipped well, had served Pitch and a few other cops their coffees, and hadn’t run into anyone unsavory. It was pretty good. Moses tucked some of his long black hair behind his ear and smiled to himself. It had even stopped raining right before he had stepped outside and the air was fresh-as fresh as it could get in a city. Moses stopped by an alley and kneeled down as a cat poked it’s scruffy head around the corner.
“Here puss. Got some scraps if you want it”
“Well aren’t we the epitome of goodness”
Moses froze and looked up slowly, seeing a gaseous figure ooze out of the shadows. Hexxus. Moses got up and turned around but there were two of his father’s goons in the alley entrance. Moses swallowed down panic and turned towards his father once more.
“What do you want, Hexxus”
“Can’t a father visit with his son now and then?”
“Trying to get the father of the year award then? First time you’ve cared”
Hexxus only grinned and waved one hand dismissively.
“Don’t be that way, dear Moses. Besides, I just want to help you”
Moses narrowed his eyes and clenched his hands into fists.
“I don’t need your help”
Hexxus approached his son and used on tendril-like finger to lift Moses’ head up so the young man was staring directly into coal-like eyes.
“There’s a new drug going around, targeting Others. It’s bad for business and bad for me. You being my son means they might target you. You’re either coming to live with me in my penthouse or you’re letting some of my boys follow you, understood?”
Moses’ scowl deepened. Since when did Hexxus care about Moses’ well-being? He hadn’t even tried to help when Moses’ mother died! At the very least the demon could have helped pay child support. But he hadn’t raised a finger. It was only when Moses started discovering his demonic powers had Hexxus started to care. The mafia head boss looked at his son until Moses lowered his head.
“Okay, I’ll let some of your boys follow me. But at a distance, okay? they can’t bother me when I work” Hexxus grinned like he just won a battle and Moses swallowed again. He felt the old anger rise up and his eyes turned black. “You or your boys set one foot closer near me than I like and I’m calling the police on you understood? They have a demon who can go toe to toe and he won’t hesitate to protect me, unlike you, my own father” Moses said the last part bitterly and waved a hand through his father, forcing his way through the alley.
“Maybe we’ll make a demon of you yet, if you act this way. Maybe you’ll be more like me” said Hexxus smugly behind him, and Moses’ eyes turned to normal and he felt a cold hand of terror clasp his heart. Moses like Hexxus? Never. Not if he could help it.
