Terra was in the spare bedroom of their shared apartment. It was unlike her partner and boyfriend to be so distant with her. She was worried. She bit her lip at looked at the clock once again. It was late. She couldn’t sleep since he hadn’t come to bed with her like had since they first started dating. It was an odd thing, but she had grown used to having him there beside her and she would never admit it but his presence was like a security blanket for her. She felt safer with him. But he wouldn’t speak to her anymore. Not that she blamed him. He stormed back to their apartment and locked himself away in the guest room after work. She looked at the clock, only one minute had passed. He skipped dinner, saying he wasn’t hungry.
Sighing she got to her feet. She was tired of sitting at the kitchen table waiting for him to come to her. She was going to go to him. She padded her way down the hallway, being quiet so she didn’t wake her neighbors because unfortunately the walls were thin. She shook her head. As if it weren’t confusing enough. When she reached his door she gave it a soft knock, something he would hear but not too loud.
"Terra?" she asked softly, "Terra, are you in there?"
She didn’t receive an answer. She frowned. It stung a little to know he wasn’t answering her. She knew he was in there. He had to be in there. There was no way he could have gotten out of the window. They lived too high up and of their partnership, she was the only one who could fly. Was it because she was an Other and he was human? Was that finally getting to him, finally dawning on him that she was different than he was? That was her greatest fear. That he wouldn’t want to be with her anymore because she was different.
"I want to talk to you… I well, if you want to that is," she said, "If not… I’ll wait until tomorrow."
Aqua started to walk away from the door. Suddenly the lock clicked and the door opened. She could see Terra standing in the door way. She started to smile back, delighted that he had finally come out to see her but then she paused. Her smile faltered. He had a smile on that was far too bright for whatever had occurred to make him mad before. It didn’t sit right with her. He didn’t smile like that. But his room was so dark, she couldn’t really see much other than the too wide smile on his face.
"Hello Aqua," he said softly. "I’m sorry you've been worrying about me."
"It's okay… I just…" she paused, "Wanted to check on you… You don't want to talk much anymore…"
"I talk," Terra argued.
"Just not with me," Aqua retorted.
Terra winced. It was true. He hadn’t spent a lot of time with her since his the fire. Sure they had both gotten time off work due to their injuries but Terra disappeared for long hours, wouldn't talk when he got back, kept his distance. But things were different now because now, if he thought about how he felt enough, he could piece these feelings together. He could gather them all up, and put it together, all to make one four lettered word that summed it all up. But it felt dangerous to declare this feeling, to figure it out.
"I've just been having some problems but I can take care of them," Terra said.
Aqua frowned. She knew he wasn’t going to clarify what his problems were and it hurt her. He didn’t trust her enough to see if she could help him. She looked away, trying to remain nonchalant about everything. She blinked in surprise when Terra slammed the door in her face. She immediately tried the door knob to find it was already locked.
"Fine… I see how it is… I'll leave you to your thoughts then," she said.
She turned to walk away. Her chest ached and she knew she wasn’t going to have very much sleep that night. She barely heard his door opening behind her. She turned, probably faster and a little more eager than she should have. But she had been worried about him. Terra had just shut down after the accident. She didn’t care about what the accident did to him, but it seemed that Terra did. She just wanted to help him get through it.
"Wait…" he said, even softer than before, "Don't go yet… We can talk.”"
He motioned for her to walk into his room. Aqua turned and slowly walked in, feeling uncomfortable and a little worried at the same time. ‘I wonder what he wants to talk about…’ Aqua thought, ‘It seems important to him… but… just what is he thinking?’ She thought long and hard but nothing came to mind. At one point she thought she knew what her partner was thinking, even before he thought it himself, but now, after the accident, he was pulling away from her. It made her feel so helpless, because there was nothing she could do to fight her own partner.
"What’s bothering you?"
"Eh? Aqua my issues are something you might not want to get into… Let’s talk about you," Terra said.
"No!" Aqua nearly shouted, "I’m worried about you Terra! You haven’t been eating and don’t you dare lie to me and say you’ve slept in the past three days…"
She bowed her head when she realized how loud she was getting, which was very much unlike her. She had to reign in her own emotions if they were even going to touch what Terra was going through. She took a deep breath before smoothing a hand through her hair, taking the time to try and take and edge off of her nerves. Terra just stared at her with those startling yellow eyes of his. The color cut straight through the darkness, like it was piercing Aqua’s very soul. She tried to give him the most reassuring smile that she could.
"Terra, I just want to help you," Aqua reasoned, "If you just talk to m-"
"Drop it already!" Terra snapped.
Aqua blinked in surprise. He had never gotten short with her before, a flash of anger blazing through his now yellow eyes eyes. He looked like he was on edge, ready to snap like a rubber band coiled too tightly. Then she bowed her head. She bit her lip. So the talk hadn’t gone anywhere at all. She probably should have expected so much. She couldn’t push him too far too fast. He would never forgive her if she did. He had never forced her to do something she didn’t want to. Asking him to do that was just unfair.
"I understand…"
She got to her feet. She felt quite defeated over not getting a conclusive answer from him. But what else was she supposed to do? Terra had put up walls around his heart and she was going to tear her fingers bloody by trying to take them down. She just wanted to help but right now, she felt more like a burden than anything else. She closed her eyes. Perhaps if she gave him a little more time to himself to sort things out on his own, he would open up to her and talk. Just a little more time and he would be back to his usual self.
"Goodnight, Terra," she told him.
Then she left him in his room. What she didn’t know was that as she lay, tossing and turning on her bed in her room, Terra lay just as restless, just as uneasy in his bed in his room.
Sighing she got to her feet. She was tired of sitting at the kitchen table waiting for him to come to her. She was going to go to him.
