Yang frowned. It was understandable, why witches and wizards were afraid of becoming targets. She'd be afraid too. But she felt like it was better to combat what you were afraid of rather than just sit around and think about yourself. Didn't they care about people who were already affected, like Sunshine and Shadow? But Anna seemed to want to change the topic, so Yang just rolled along with it. "Haven't been up to much," she replied. Sure, plenty had happened since they had last met, like her encounter with Cinder's gang and her questionable relationship with Chat. But she doubted she could talk to Anna about that stuff. She wasn't sure how she'd take some of it, and her near-death experience with Cinder still made her frightened anytime she thought about it. "Just been earning some cash participating in some fighting rings," she replied. She felt glad, now that she was fighting legally. And now that she was an adult, she could find even more venues now. It was one of the few perks of turning eighteen, in her opinion.

"You must be a pretty amazing fighter to go up against competitors in a fighting ring."
With that said, Anna finally finished off the last of her jambalaya and pushed the empty bowl aside, finally creating enough room for her to once again return all her papers and files to the tabletop. Even though she knew she would have to return to the case soon, it was nice to have even a brief moment to focus on something else.
"So what are you planning on using your saved winnings for?"

Yang gave a little laugh. "Yeah, I started kickboxing when I was little, and I kind of just took off from there. Of course, having fire powers helps too." Being able to shoot fireballs and create big walls of flame certainly came in handy when she was trying to win a fight. Granted, some of the people she went against had powers too, but they tended to underestimate her because of her age. And she always enjoyed proving them wrong. Yang hesitated for a moment at Anna's question. Telling people about the kids she looked after generally didn't happen until she had gotten to know them a little better. And she had spoken to Anna only a handful of times. Heck, maybe even less than that. Plus, she was a member of the BPD. That tended to create an extra barrier. True, some of Yang's BPD friends knew about the kids she looked after, but those were few and far between. Maybe she'd have to save her kids for a future conversation. "Mostly winter gear," she replied, which wasn't entirely a lie. Her kids were growing fast, and they would need new jackets and shoes soon. It didn't get freezing in Bellerouge, but it was certainly chilly enough to make nights uncomfortable if you didn't have some kind of heating system. Or lots and lots of blankets.

"Yeah, that's right! It's almost winter. Ding dang, I keep forgetting how quickly this year is going by."
Anna paused in putting the remaining files on the table and looked around, almost as if she expected to spot the missing time that seemed to have passed her by. Then another thought struck her and a look of trepidation came across her features.
"I gotta get started on my Christmas shopping pronto!"
With that said, she ducked into the bag by her side before pulling out length of paper. It was quite long and seemed to contain nothing but names of all the people she was planning on presenting with a gift that year. Without even hesitating, she added Yang's name to the bottom of the list.
"Good thing I ran into you or I'd have forgotten to add you to my list!"

Yang blinked as Anna pulled out a pretty sizable list as she mentioned Christmas shopping. "You kinda look like Santa Claus, with a lost that long," she joked. It looked like Anna had a lot of friends. Given the girl's cheerful personality though, it was no wonder why. Sunshine was the same way. Her happy way of doing things just attracted people. As Anna added Yang's name to the list, she said "Oh, no, you don't to do that." It wasn't that she didn't like gifts, far from it. Christmas was just iffy for her because any gifts she gave tended to be simple. Most of her money went towards getting stuff for her kids. Any gifts for her friends tended to be things like treating them to a cup of coffee or giving them a few bucks to buy a lottery ticket. Sometimes she felt like it wasn't adequate payback, when some of her friends got her pretty nice things.

"Of course I do! Just call me one of Santa's little helpers!"
She smiled at Yang, the first genuine smile she had given all that day that wasn't weighed down with worry. Yang had reminded her that, while bad things might currently be happening, there was almost always something good to look forward to if you only tried. Besides, she loved giving things to people during the holidays.
"Besides, you haven't had a chance to try any of my holiday baking! This is the time of year when I make all my special goodies and even give bakeries like Nevermore a run for their money!"

Yang gave a laugh. That certainly seemed to describe Anna at this point. She sounded like Sunshine when Christmas rolled around, right down to all the baked goods. "At this rate, you and Sunshine are going to make me gain ten pounds by the time Christmas is over," she teased. The Nevermore Bakery always liked to go nuts when December rolled around. At that point, it was time to chuck the pumpkin-flavored stuff and break out the peppermint and gingerbread.

"Hey, I am what I am, and around this time of year that means I'm a baking fiend."
She gave a little laugh at this before rolling up her list and putting it once more in her bag. Yes, Anna was feeling much better now that she had been distracted by Yang. It helped clear her mind and make her thing of other things besides Grey Dawn for a change.
"And if you think my cookies are amazing, you should see the spread I make for Christmas dinner. I'll have to see who I can rope into coming over to my place for it this year."

Yang blinked. Anna mad Christmas dinner for people too? She wondered how she managed to fit all the baking and cooking into her schedule. "Are you sure you're not a witch who's trying to fatten us up so we taste better?" she joked. Regardless though, at least Anna seemed to be in a much better mood, talking about all the holiday stuff she was going to do. Yang was happy to keep the conversation going if it meant her friend could be her usual peppy self.

"I wish. I'll be honest with you, Yang. Sometimes I wish I was an Other or at least a Gifted Human. They all have such amazing powers and abilities and talents! I mean, I just have to look at my coworkers and see how incredible they are! Sunshine with her healing, Shadow with his Chaos powers, Pitch with his shadows, Esmeralda with her fire. And I'm just, well, me."
Anna's tone had grown somewhat wistful as she spoke and she couldn't help but let her mind wander for just a moment, daydreaming about what it would be like to have a power of her own.

Yang frowned. She hadn't meant for the conversation to take a turn like this. In some ways though, she had heard this conversation before. Cody and Penny had said things like this before, how they wished they had powers like Louie, Jenny, and Yang. Yang always tried to assure them that just because they didn't have powers didn't mean they weren't special. It looked like she was going to have to have a similar pep talk with Anna. "Hey, don't sell yourself short," she said. "Just because you're human doesn't mean you can't do cool stuff too. I mean, you probably know everything about dead bodies, right?" Maybe that wasn't the right choice of words, but dead bodies was Anna's specialty. Yang doubted anyone one else on the BPD unit could analyze corpses like she could, morbid as the task might be.

"Oh, I know that. And I know that being Other isn't all its cracked up to be either."
Anna let her gaze drop to the table, not out of any shyness or shame but rather to give her mind a chance to focus on what she was trying to convey to Yang. The blonde woman seemed to think she didn't value herself, but that wasn't the case. She knew she had her own gifts, even if they were perfectly mundane in their origin.
"They fall under fire from a lot of hatred and bigotry, and having special powers can be just as much of a burden as it is a gift. It's just at times I wonder what it would be like to be able to do more, to experience what it is like to fly or even have the ability to heal others."

Yang thought for a moment as she listened to Anna. Maybe it wasn't envy her friend was feeling. It was just curiosity, which was understandable. What person hadn't wondered what it was like to fly, or turn into an animal, or run faster than a bullet? "I guess I haven't really thought about it that much," she said, giving a shrug. She'd never thought about what her life might be like if she was a regular human. She was a half phoenix, and that was that. Besides, she loved her powers too much to want to be anything else. They were a part of her, and they'd saved her butt too many times to count. She didn't know what she'd do without them.

"Well, it doesn't really matter. I am wait I am and that's all human."
Anna said this and paused for a moment before seeming to rouse herself with a smile at Yang. She might not have powers like so many of the people she knew, but at least she was happy with her lot in life and that was more then a lot of other people could say. However, a look of concern also flashed across her eyes as she spoke again.
"Hey, I know it might sound silly or even nagging, but be careful, ok? The city is getting a lot more dangerous of lately and I couldn't stand to hear someone I knew got hurt. Grey Dawn isn't just targeting Others anymore."
She glanced down at the file sitting on top of her biggest heap, the latest report on an attack against an Others support group. The group had been very outspoken about accepting Others and treating them with the same respect and rights as were given to Humans. At least, that was until Grey Dawn had launched an attack against them, destroying their office and beating everyone present to within an inch of their lives. Clearly Grey Dawn didn't care about who they ended up hurting as long as they got what they wanted in the end, the complete removal of all Others.

With all the crazy stuff that had been happening lately, Yang felt like Anna's concern about her was only natural. Heck, she had already had one hear-death experience. She wasn't too keen on having another one anytime soon. "Don't worry, I will," she promised her. "If anyone tries anything with me, they'll have my fists to answer to." She gave a grin. That did seem to be the best way to handle situations like these. Just a few fiery punches, maybe one flaming kick, and people knew not to mess with her. Usually, at least.
