"As a gifted human, I can advocate and say your kids are in a gray area," Sunshine shrugged. "That means they won't be separated from normal kids, but their abilities will be sought after. Jenny might be asked to be a vet with her animal speech." Well, that was the nice version. Sunshine didn't want to talk about that woman, Gothel, who had tried to steal a bit of her hair when she was a kid. Wendy had been a badass mother scaring her away with her own sunny powers
"According to the pamphlet," Shadow mused, studying the brochure, "people can volunteer to assist the kids in getting out the match is bad." He looked long and hard at Yang. Looking after kids may not be his forte, but he wanted to do what he could. "Look, Yang, I know this is a lot, but you know we're your friends, and we wouldn't let anyone hurt your kids. Our places can be like a safe house."
Sunshine just touched the trimmed ends of her hair, nodding in agreement. Shadow had taken kids in trouble seriously, especially given the Maria thing. Louie and the others weren't Maria, but maybe this would give him closure.

Yang gave a little laugh. "She has always wanted a pet cat," she said, smiling a tiny bit. Maybe once she had a place to live, her guardian could get her one. She deserved something nice. Heck, all the kids did. Once they were with people who could take care of them right, they could have all the normal things that kids had, like pets and their own rooms and whatever toys were popular nowadays. Things like that could have been done at the hideout. Yang had always prioritized other things, like food, clothes, and sleeping bags. Shadow pretty much promised that he and Sunshine would make sure that the kids were safe, and if they weren't, they would get them out. That eased some of Yang's worries. If there was anyone she could trust with this, it would be these two. "Thanks, guys. Really. I think they can find good homes, if you're backing them up."

"Other perks of having cops as your friends, you get a pretty powerful reference." Shadow raised his mug to Yang as he put in another point. Once Yang got herself out of the crosshairs of psychos she could look for a bigger job she would admire. Not that he wasn't happy for Sunshine's offer, but he knew Yang wanted a job that was full of excitement, something that had her fight for the thrill without getting put in jail, at least not threatening to anyways. He wanted to bring up Chat at the topic of cats, but bit his tongue on the matter. The last thing he wanted was to make Yang upset after such good news was being rained down upon her.

Yang had to agree with that. Having the cops on your side did kind of make things easier, in a matter of speaking. Even if it was just two of them out of the whole force. However, one question was still on her mind. "You think Frollo will try and stick me in a cell?" she asked. "He seemed like he really wanted to do it." With Yang's record, it was possible that he could actually do it. Or maybe his threat had just been an empty one. Knowing what lawyers could and couldn't do wasn't exactly something Yang knew.

Shadow and Sunshine just looked at each other. The ultimate question. Her report had shown several varieties of crimes. The good news was the crimes weren't big enough to get her sent to Usher House, which was the new name of the high security prison built to withstand Other criminals. Shadow had hoped that one day, the cops would finally get Vanitas in there. The bad news was the assault on the cops borderlined a jail term. But on the other hand, the robberies and thefts were on lieu with what Chat had been doing, just supplying for help. But on the other hand, theft was only a crime if kept for selfish reasons...the rushing throughs were frustrating.
"We...could get Elsa to find some loopholes," Sunshine hedged, her voice unsure but her mind ever hopeful. "She's always sticking up for the underdog. And she hates Frollo more than we do."
"Sunshine, let's not get too fancy," Shadow set his mug down a bit hard. The coffee sloshed, but thankfully didn't spill. His red eyes were probably more intense than usual. The thought of a kid in jail, just because she kicked a bully in the face even though her Phoenix powers could have easily burned him and he admired the restraint Yang had for not doing that, was riling him up. "If Frollo wants to put Yang in a cell, he's going to have to go through me."
"But Shadow..." Sunshine started to say.
"Ever since I chewed him out in court regarding his views on the Black War, he knows that crossing me is a big mistake." That day had been a victory for the Others Unit. Frollo had gone forward to accuse the Others of overruling government, starting with the Others Unit taking over the police. Shadow had called him out for using old fashioned ideals and even called him a hypocrite for taking Others clients and making asumptions of the Black War. The case had won in their favor.

Yang remembered Sunshine mentioning Elsa before. Apparently, she was one of the few rich people in this city that wasn't a complete jerk. And if she hated Frollo even more than they did, well, that could turn out pretty useful. And Shadow seemed especially angry at the idea of Frollo sticking Yang in a cell. According to him, Frollo had gotten on his bad side once, and it sounded like it hadn't been pretty. Yang would have loved to see that. "I guess that works for now," she said. "If he's intimidated by you, that may give enough time for Elsa to find some way out of it." Until then, Yang just had to make sure not to slip into any of her illegal habits. She had to stay completely clean from now on if she didn't want to attract any attention to herself.

That was one way of looking at the situation. Frollo would piss his pants if Shadow went anywhere near him. That and there was the Sapien waterfront confrontation that the cops needed to be at. Omar had only been arrested for minor crimes, too, which meant the law couldn't touch him until he struck three. The kids, and Yang, were in good hands. "Elsa's awesome at Other rights loopholes," Sunshine beamed. "She's a gifted human, too, so I guess she shares a sort of empathy. Total opposite of a half-phoenix." She grinned widley, her face falling when she realized her connection just got a quizzical look from Shadow. "You know...fire...and ice...opposites," she sank back.

Yang had to give a little laugh at the clueless look Shadow gave Sunshine. She found it amusing. "I'll have to meet her sometime," she said. She did sound pretty interesting, from the way Sunshine and Shadow described her. Living the way she had for so long had made her a little wary of strangers, especially those in the legal department. Maybe now was the time to change that.

Sunshine was still slouching, embarrased by her terrible jokes. First, she had turned the guy she had a crush on, Riku, into a rabbit because of a demon curse. Now, she was playing devil's advocate for a half-phoenix who nearly escaped the claws of the law. She sat upright, looking back over her shoulder. The cafe had cleared out a bit, but there were still some customers, one of whom glared daggers in her direction. She stood, taking the coffee pot. "I, uh, I should be getting back to work. Um...good luck Yang." She smiled weakly before scooting out.
Shadow shook his head with a quiet titter and a shake of his head. Whenever Sunshine got nervous, she retreated to becoming a sort of timid shell of herself. Over the years, she had grown more confident, but every once in a while it would sneak out. This just left him and Yang. The poor kid had been through a lot. In fact, it was very identical to his life in the streets. "So...you still going to fight at Beacon? No one said you couldn't have a hobby."

Sunshine hurriedly excused herself from the conversation. It did look like mostly everything was settled. The three of them had a game plan for the kids, and Yang. Now, they just needed some time to make it work. Yang felt like she shouldn't stay at Omar's for too long. Maybe she could switch off to Jane's place in about two weeks, hop around a bit until she got a place of her own. It probably wasn't the most convenient idea, but she felt like it could work. Besides, it might irritate Frollo if she was moving around all the time, and that would make her feel very satisfied. She gave a nod. "Yeah. I mean, if I can still make some money there, I might as well. Heck, even if I don't, I wanna keep doing it. I feel like it's the one thing I'm good at, you know?" During a fight, Yang was at her most confident. She didn't want to cut that out of her life, especially when things were so hectic. It was probably the only way she could relieve stress at this point.

Flynn stabbed, Belle literally waterboarded, and now with no one to turn to expect for a select few. No wonder Yang took up fighting and trained to be good at it. Shadow was no psychologist, but he totally understood why she gravitated to fighting; it was something that gave her a confidence she didn't have in the face of tragedy. He had sought out that outlet many times. "Good. Nice to know I have a sparring buddy in the rings. It'd be pretty boring without you."

Yang gave a little laugh. "Yeah, I do like to shake things up every now and then," she said. It made things interesting, to say the least. And fighting Shadow would definitely be interesting. She hadn't really seen him in action before, and certainly not against her. He'd be a nice challenge.

"Don't think I'll go easy on you," Shadow warned. The last person who had ever bested him in a friendly match had been Ralph LaCouer, and that was back whent he Giant had actually been on the force. Big fits were one thing, but concussive fire blasts from a half-Phoenix? If push came to shove, then Shadow and Yang would have to owe the whole ring a new arena. He twirled one of his inhibitor rings lightly, "and you're lucky that I won't take these off."

"As if I'd have it any other way," Yang said with a smile. When Shadow started twirling one of his rings, Yang glanced at it curiously. She remembered Shadow calling them "inhibitor rings", and she figured they were related to his powers in some way, but she didn't know exactly what they did. "So, what do those rings do exactly?" she asked. "You called them inhibitor rings, right?"

Well, that question was bound to come up eventually. Plus, Shadow remembered Sunshine asking him the very same question as when they were stuck in the vampire lair together, he had to hold the inhibitor rings in place to save up any energy for an escape plan. Even he himself had limited knowledge as to how he had them and why. All he knew was why he had them and how they worked. It would be questions to explore on the locating his lost memories track he'd gon one once all this had settled.
"In case you haven't noticed, I've got a lot of intense energy flowing through my body," he said. "It's how I'm able to run hypersonic speeds, how I'm able to shoot those blasts. I have so much power, that I need to wear these. Otherwise, Bellerouge would be nothing. I only take these off as an absolute resort."
He had said this to apply to both real life, his job, and just for fun fighting. The power always had him tired out. One time, he had exerted so uch energy, he had passed out. Sunshine had got him out okay, but he had woken up somewhat groggy. Part of him wondered if his chaos powers could potentially kill him. The less he thought about that, the better.
