Shadow frowned at the paperwork in his hand. He had sat outside the Nevermore main shop, his order in a paper bag and cup. Disparion had sent him to a whole new restricted access point. This time, the reward for beating up an obsolete government robot was a file belonging to "Professor Gerald." The work described medical terms he would have to ask Anna about, but one thing caught his attention.
"Ultimate creature...composed of every type of Other."
What did that mean?

Omar was headed towards the coffee shop, tired as anything but needing to stay up for a few more hours at least to get things he'd been putting off for far too long done. After that, he could sleep. He didn't have a gig that night so he could sleep all night if he wanted too. He probably wouldn't, but the option was there. He lifted himself out of his thoughts long enough to notice a familiar face and smiled wearily. "Hey Shadow. How goes it?" the things in Shadow's hands looked curious but Omar didn't question that. He was too tired to try and get out of a possibly tense situation brought on by unnecessary prying.

"Hm?" It was rare Shadkw was able to look up from his work. But, he had 't expected to hear such a friendly greeting from someone he had met twice. But, to be fair, Omar was no ordinary troll since he was taking care of Yang and her kids. Setting the fielder aside, Shadow nodded. "Hey, Omar. Just been...grasping at straws." A half-truth, to say the least.

"Something weighing on you man? Or does spacing out come with the job?" Shadow didn't look tired, but it was hard to tell with the hedgehog guy what he was feeling most of the time. Besides pissed off or annoyed of course. Omar nodded knowingly. "When I was lookin for Jane, that's the best I could do, was grasp at straws. I didn't give up hope though. But in the end she found me so it all worked out. Maybe whatever you're grasping for'll find it's way over ya know?"

Shadow shrugged. Omar wouldn't want to hear about his whole amnesia, can't remember shit story. Instead, he just kept quiet about it. Besides, he could have done another half truth and say it was confidential. This thing was getting abused by the cops more often than not. Instead, he listened to Omar show empathy. "Jane's your daughter right?" he asked.

"Yea, Jane's my baby girl" well, the one from Cindy. He didn't know where the other two who had inherited the immortality gene were. Probably somewhere back in England. They were a few centuries old though so he counted Jane as his baby. "She's living her own life, but she sees me once or twice a week for dinner or just to talk. We still have a lot to catch up on" he looked at Shadow, unsure whether or not to call him out on the subject change, and decided not. It was Shadow's business and he'd tell when he wanted.

Shadow just nodded to that. Family was something he probably would never experience. Not if Sunshine was rejecting him, and the only time he probably had a family was something he couldn't even remember feeling sad for. The memories of Maria made it seem like he and her had a somewhat father-daughter relationship, and he was kind of beginning to feel like that towards Yang, but being jealous of something he probably couldn't remember having seemed unfair. "Yeah. She's lucky her father didn't give up on her. I'm like that with Yang - which by the way, glad she and the kids are with you. I wouldn't trust anyone else to look after them."

"Yang's like a niece or daughter or something" Omar said with a shrug of his shoulders. "I wouldn't have been mean and denied her a place to lay her bones. She had kids with her, and I bet you know how trolls get about kids" he smiled slightly. "Heck, Yang's barely out of being a kid herself. I tell ya now, I don't abandon friends, especially kids. I'm just glad she and the kids are safe, ya know?" He was deeply touched that Shadow looked at him with that amount of trust already to be fine with Omar taking care of someone Shadow practically considered a daughter.

"Funny. That's how I view her, too." WHo knew Yang had two big tough gys looking out after her. To be fair, she had known Omar the longest, so Shadow had no reason to really get jealous or angry. Besides, Omar had shown a softer side just spending time with Jane. "Sunshine and I found some adoption companies to help with the kids. Yang picked out the ones she liked. We even got her a job. Of course, I'll still be her punch-kick buddy at Beacon. Girl's got a mean uppercut."

"Dads gotta stick together" Omar joked with a smile. He nodded. "If she needs any extra help I'm always here for her. Her, Namine and Jane all got my support. I love em all, Yang and Namine like they were my own kids. I'm really proud of how Yang is handling the situation. Not too long ago she would have just tried to punch her way out of things. But she's not. That's telling me she's growing up and taking proper care more than anything else" Omar said with some pride.

The corner of Shadow's mouth curved upward for a brief few seconds, communicating that he did find the crack Omar made humorous. The on;y way for a laugh to bet out was maybe more beers or more hanging out as opposed to finding a common bond of trust. Another name dropped by Omar got his attention. Namine. He had spoken to her once in the offices, and the last time they spoke, she had mentioned being afraid of her memory powers. He nodded in agreement about Yang being mature about the situation before switching the topic of the girls.
"How has Namine been? I've only talked to her once, and I swear, the poor girl's got a lot on her plate."

The troll grinned at the smile, pleased that the other had gotten the joke. Omar realized he hadn't really spoken to Namine besides a few brief words for a while and shrugged a little self consciously. "She seems to be hangin in there. Doing her best. I'm just there to remind her to eat every so often right now. Haven't had a good conversation with her in a while. I need to remedy that soon. She tries really hard to please you cops and a lot of you seem to ignore her. I don't mean you personally but other people. Maybe give her something to show you lot care on Christmas will do her some good" he suggested.

"She told me herself she didn't want to intrude in them," Shadow pointed out. The ignoring thing was something that didn't surprise him. What did surprise was that Namine being the type to try so hard to please everyone. "I didn't want to hurt her feelings by saying anything." He stopped in that moment, wincing as a migraine-like pain throbbed in his head. He put a hand on top, stumbling to the ground. The street was blurring white. All sound was collapsing...
Maria was lying on a bed. Her face was pale and thin. She was skinnier than ever, and even the light in her eyes had dimmed. She didn't even turn around when Shadow rapped on the door.
"Come on, Maria," he said. "You have to eat something. You can't expect..."
"Expect what?! To live on my own?! If Grandpa hadn't found me, I'dve dead!" She swatted her hand at open air. "I can't do any of that! Everyone else does, while I'm stuck here! I don't have anyone my age to talk to, to confide in! I can't expect anything! Just get out!"
Shadow had fled. The jet skates were roaring, and he had sent people flying in his wake. But all he knew was Maria didn't need him. She needed a friend, but one that wasn't him

"Well...I think she needs a little push to be honest. Just show her not everyone wants to hurt her. Especially you guys. Maybe some flowers for her apartment would be good" Omar said thoughtfully, already thinking of what to get her for Christmas. He stopped however when Shadow started stumbling and lunged to catch him before he fell to the ground. "Shadow? Shadow! C'mon buddy, stay with me here. I can't run fast and especially not with your weight slowin me down, so the hospital is outta the question"

The images in Shadow's head blurred between a foggy past and the reality. He would have fallen face first on the pavement if some hands hadn't caught him. A voice was calling out in the fog. The only guys he knew were Ralph, Dimitri, Jim and...
Omar.
That's right. He had been talking with Omar before a memory relapse put him in a funk. His vision cleared and he rose slowly. "Sorry about that," he planted. "Memory recall...long story." He rubbed the side of his head. The throbbing was dying down, but that didn't mean it still hurt
