The day had come. Yang’s kids would be getting picked up today, and they were all feeling a little tense. Everything would change after this day. They’d all be in separate houses, some even in separate cities. They knew that this was for the better, but they still knew that not being with each other every day would take some getting used to. Louie was especially downtrodden, being the only kid who still had reservations about this whole thing. He spent most of the time sulking. Yang still had hope that he would come around, though.
They had been at the police station with Sunshine and Shadow for about an hour when Jenny’s mom, Anya, arrived. She looked almost exactly like her, with the same blue eyes and red hair. The two practically lit up when they saw each other.
“Mom!” Jenny cried as she ran over and threw her arms around her mother.
“Oh Jenny, it’s so good to see you,” Anya said, immediately sweeping her daughter into a hug. “I’ve missed you so much.”
Yang couldn’t deny that the scene kind of made her heart melt. Anya caught her looking at the two of them and smiled.
“So, you’re the one who’s been taking care of my daughter,” she said.
“Uh…yeah,” Yang replied, not sure if Anya was going to praise her or admonish her for the living conditions Jenny was in. Luckily, she received the former.
“Thank you, for taking care of Jenny,” Anya said with a smile. “If you hadn’t been around, I’m not sure what might have happened to her.”
Yang smiled back, glad to hear that Anya was on the thankful side. While living in an abandoned movie theater wasn’t the best place for children, at least people could acknowledge that Yang kept these kids away from adults who wanted to hurt them. That had to count for something.
Jenny spent at least ten minutes hugging everyone goodbye. Penny was already getting tearful, despite everyone promising that they would stay in contact with her and her brother. Yang just hoped she didn’t start full-on crying, or she might start as well. She felt like a mother whose children were leaving the nest. It led to all sorts of mushy emotions. But, Jenny soon walked out the door, with one hand holding her small bag of belongings, and the other holding onto her mother. Yang felt confident that Anya would take good care of her.
Cody and Penny’s grandmother, Mrs. Tweed, arrived about forty five minutes afterwards. In a way, it was much like Anya’s reunion with Jenny. The three hugged each other a lot and said how much they missed each other and how good it was to see each other.
“Grandma, we can come visit Yang soon, right?” Penny asked.
“Of course,” Mrs. Tweed replied. “Yang’s practically part of the family. We’ll visit her often.”
That made Yang smile again. She glanced at Sunshine and Shadow, who had been quiet spectators for the most part. They seemed pretty pleased that this was going well so far. More goodbyes were said, and then Louie was the only kid left.
Roger and Anita got there after another forty five minutes. Yang kept an eye on Louie, to see how he reacted. He didn’t embrace his new foster parents very warmly, but he at least let them hug him and seemed slightly interested when they said they would take him shopping for stuff to put in his room. Yang could tell that he sensed they were good people. No doubt Louie could feel the excitement and love radiating from them.
“Yang, should we really do this?” he asked. “You feel sad. You’ve been feeling it all day.”
“Well, of course I’m feeling sad,” Yang replied, straightening his baseball cap. “I’ve never been apart from you guys. It’ll take some getting used to. But, do you know what else I’ve been feeling today?”
Louie looked down at his feet before he replied with “Happy.”
“That’s right.” Yang tilted Louie’s chin up so he could meet her eyes. “You and the other kids are going to be living with people who will love you and take good care of you. You’ll have your own room and you’ll make new friends and you get to do normal kid stuff.”
“Is normal kid stuff really that great?” Louie asked skeptically.
Yang gave a little laugh. ‘I think you’ll like it. And don’t forget, I have a house phone, so you can call me on that whenever you want. And once I get a cell phone, you can call me on that too. Okay?”
“Okay.” Louie didn’t sound 100% enthusiastic, but he seemed to at least be willing to give Roger and Anita a chance. Yang felt like that was the best she could hope for, for now at least.
She gave Louie a hug, and then just like that, he was gone with his new parents, going to his new home. Yang let out a sigh. This was for the best. She had to remember that. Her kids were going to people that could take care of them better than she could.
“Yang, you ready to go?”
Shadow’s voice brought Yang out of her thoughts. She turned to him with a smile. “Yeah. Guess it’s time for me to get to my new home.”
Yang’s house was small and quaint, just right for her. Riku had really picked out a nice place. Although, she was quiet the whole ride there. She could feel Shadow glancing at her every now and then, but he didn’t say anything until they arrived.
“Okay, Sunshine should drop by tomorrow morning,” he said as Yang stepped out of the car. “And you’ve got our numbers, so you can call us whenver you want.”
“Right.” Yang tried not to feel so nervous about this. Sure, she was excited to get to her new home, which was a lot better than an abandoned movie theater, but the idea of being there all by herself was slightly nerve-wracking. Plus, this meant that she had a whole new bag of responsibilities now. Now that her kids were going to be taken care of, she had to focus on herself now. She had to get her GED, make sure she was ready for her first shift at the bakery in a few days, and try to figure out some kind of long-term career.
“Hey.”
Yang turned when Shadow addressed her. He gave her one his rare smiles before saying “You’re gonna be fine.”
Yang nodded. “Yeah, I know.” That was what everyone kept telling her. No matter how nervous she was, they were confident that she could excel at this. Yang had to have faith in herself. She let out a slow breath. This was a new chapter, for her and her kids. She had to make the most of it. She walked into her new home with her head held high, the door shutting quietly behind her.
((Rushed writing is rushed, but I wanted to get this plot over and done with. So, basically, Yang's living on her own now and all her kids have guardians. Yay. XD))
