Pitch was unhappy.
That in and of itself was highly unusual for the Demon, considering he prided himself on being emotionally distant in almost everything. Part of his unhappiness stemmed from the final training session with Adeline and how it had ended, part of it was in response to feeling any emotions at all when he wasn't supposed to. However, the greater part of his unhappiness came simply from the fact that he been partnered with Shadow on a current case.
Pitch had worked almost exclusively as a solitary officer since joining the BPD, but recently the Commissioner had been giving him temporary partners to work with more and more. The first had been with Esmeralda and now it was with Shadow. And while the Demon normally didn't care, his current state of mind didn't react well to the news.
He paced the main area of the BPD where various officer's desks stood, a manila folder in hand with the case details and information in hand. He was waiting for Shadow to arrive so that they could being the investigation, but already Pitch could tell he was displeased. His mind kept wandering back to his final departure from Adeline and the more he thought about it, the more certain he was that he needed to be working alone instead of being saddled with someone. Pitch didn't need another person with him on the case, even if they were a good officer like Shadow.

Although Shadow still had his inhibitor rings on, there was still a twinge of angst powerful enough to sneak through his usually guarded control to leak some of his closed off power through. The red and black creatures and their strange leader had given him clues he had been searching for since the very beginning. The realization that they had beeen under his nose the whole time had sparked a feeling inside Shadow he hadn't felt in a long time.
Vengeance.
The vengeance and wrath were fueled more when the commissioner had given him his temporary assignment...with Pitch. The very person who was the cause of all his pain.
Stacks of papers were being blown sky high as Shadow walked into the offices. Normally, he would have zipped around to neatly stack them up again. But not this angry homonculus. Pitch stood in the hall with an envelope, no doubt containing the details of their investigation. Shadow narrowed his eyes and said nothing, storming past the demon officer to his desk, picking up the torn up picture of Maria and Professor Gerald and feigning interest in that.

Pitch's gaze wasn't focused on the door, but he heard it open forcefully as if the person walking through were only just short of slamming it. His eyes quickly turned to see Shadow entering, his face set into an even deeper scowl then usual for the homunculus. As he walked by, a stack of papers was sent flying almost as if caught in the wind but Shadow ignored them and instead went over to his desk where he seated himself and took out a tattered picture of a young blonde girl and a portly man with a large mustache.
Even in his own state, Pitch could sense the strong emotions coming off of Shadow like a heat wave, an almost invisible force that pulsated around him with a slight reddish hue. Whatever had upset the Other officer, Pitch didn't know but it left him feeling slightly on edge.
Slowly, he stepped over to where Shadow sat looking at the photograph and held up the case, his yellow eyes carefully observing Shadow.
"Shadow, I was beginning to wonder if you would show. You aren't normally the type to run late."
His words were spoken slowly, the tone neutral and yet his gaze continued to watch the homunculus carefully.

Shadow ignored Pitch. Not even a nod. He didn't have anything further to say to the demon that wouldn't result in someone getting hurt. Instead he tucked the picture back into his desk. Professor Gerald had created him, that was all he knew. Maria was connected to him by blood....was the professor the one she referred to as 'Grandpa'? The government must have come in when word came of him conspiring with demons. But why did Maria have to pay with her life? She only knew part of the truth, right?
The pieces were coming together, slowly, and Pitch had the master key. But right now Shadow wanted nothing to do with the demon.

It became clear rather quickly that Shadow was giving him the cold shoulder, but that was the least of Pitch's concerns. As he had moved closer to the homunculus, he had suddenly sensed something on the Other detective that he couldn't place yet suddenly made him extremely tense. It was almost an aura or an odor that clung faintly around Shadow, masked mostly by his own presence and yet still sensed.
What exactly had Shadow been doing?
The Demon didn't know and was aware that asking would get him nothing at this point. Instead, he dropped the file onto Shadow's desk and waited, knowing that eventually he would look at the material.
"I know you are less then pleased about working with me, but orders are orders. The sooner we finish this case, the sooner you can go back to Sunshine as your partner."

"Since you're bringing her into this, I might have to bring in your potential love interest too."
Cold, stotic, and laced with a threat. That was how Shadow answered Pitch's response. Rumors had been circling around that Pitch had been spending time with the black haired girl from the ball. Adeline. Maybe a bit more time than was normal for the demon. He spun around in his chair to pick up the file. The folder crackled as his powered hands tore apart clues and hiding.
The picture showed large, purple blobs situated in different parts of the city. The next picture showed an intense explosions, complete with people being thrown sky high from the impact.
Whatever these things were, they were targetting humans. Shadow really didn't want a part in stopping it.

Pitch suddenly froze at Shadows words, froze so perfectly that he might have been made of black marble. He didn't turn to face Shadow, didn't even react when he heard the sound of the folder being torn apart. Nothing about the Demon suggested any life in his figure at that moment, but the shadows around them suddenly seemed to grow darker and the room colder.
"Choose your next words very carefully, Shadow."
Finally, Pitch turned so that he was looking down at him, the expression on his face in that moment impossible to read or label.

"Funny. I was going to say the same thing to you."
The unreadable expression Pitch shot in Shadow's direction was unphasing. All it proved was that he did, in fact, touch a nerve. A raw one at that. Good. Making him suffer was going to be fun. He looked over the pictures again, studying the signs of the exploding items for any clues. Big explosions was one thing, but the motive and whi planted them was another.
As Shadow glanced closer, he took note of a purple-red veins pulsing through one of the ulcers. It was ugly, but something about it looked...familiar.

"I am not the one making unfounded accusations or threats."
Pitch's tone remained the same as did his posture, but the chilliness of the room only seemed to increase and the lamps on the desks seemed to be casting less light and more shadows then normal.
"Nor am I the one behaving in such a cavalier way about this case."
Despite his emotions being strong then they once were, the rational part of Pitch knew that something was very wrong with Shadow. Never before had the homunculus shown such dismissal to a case and such pent-up aggression as he did now. And the presence on him......why did it seem so familiar to Pitch?

Shadow's whole body began to rise up and down as he looked away from Pitch. It wasn't from an intesne power surge or aything like that, No, his body was shaking from a fit of laughter. It started off subtle and quiet, like it had been before. But as he continued, his laugh became much louder. Even at its loudest, the laugh was contained.
"Yet you smoke everything in darkness. Isn't that an founded threat in of itself?"
Something twinkled in his red eyes. Beneath the vengeance, there was a hint of malice.

"Do you feel threatened, then?"
Pitch's anger was cold in that moment, making it easier for him to see past the emotion. Yes, his shadows responded to it but he wasn't about to lash out at the Other. Shadow, on the other hand, seemed all too eager to pick a fight with the Demon, his anger hot and volatile and ready to explode.
"If you have something to say, Shadow, then say it. Otherwise, you can leave."

"You know what I want, Pitch. And don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about."
The hostility was causing the red streaks in his fur to brighten. They weren't violent as his fur was when he had gotten furious to know the truth, but it was a dead giveaway that if Pitch wasn't going to cooperate, the case and maybe even all of the offices, would be blown sky high. It was hot anger compared to Pitch's cold anger. The entire offices were now two energies, one red and one black. The worst of it, was one cop was a combination of both.
"I. Want. My. Memories. The ones you stole from me."

Pitch didn't even flinch when sparks began to fly off of Shadow's fur, didn't even react when he spoke in a deadly voice that would have filled anyone else with fear for their life. Instead he stood his ground and waited, waited to hear what it was that had turned the homunculus so completely against him.
But when he answered......all Pitch could do in that moment was stare. How could he know that? How was it even possible? It shouldn't have been unless..... Suddenly, in a blur of motion Pitch was standing right in front of Shadow.
"Who told you that?"
Pitch didn't wait for a response from Shadow and instead, quick as a viper, reached out and put a hand on Shadow's shoulder. As soon as Pitch's pale hand came into contact with Shadow's black fur, a barrage of images slammed into his mind. They flew by so quickly, it was impossible to make sense of them. However, there was one thing that somehow managed to distinguish itself from the blur of images assaulting him; it was an eye, an eye that all of Demonkind knew and recognized.
Pitch pulled his hand away from Shadow as if he had been burned and stared down at him in disbelief and utter shock. He spoke only one word in the following silence, one name.
"Disparion."

Heat and cold should never mix, otherwise the results would be catastrophic. That went for when opposing forces touched. Pitch's grip on Shadow was like dry ice. Cold and hot at the same time, and nevertheless painful either way. He winced and squrimed under Pitch's touch. He wasn't going to let the demon steal anymore memories. He wasn't about to forget Yang, or Omar, or Ralph or...
Sunshine.
Forgetting Sunshine would make his life more empty than it already was. He was about to throw Pitch off with his unbridled strength when Pitch removed his touch, just staring at him. The disbelief and....was that fear in his eyes? Shadow's face twisted into a dark smirk, once again chuckling grimly. Good. Pitch being afraid was going to work in his favor.
"Yes. He told me everything about what you did to me." The inky void Pitch had been putting up was being overpowered as Shadow's fur went from black to red. Everything in the offices was being lit in that bright aura. "And now you're going to pay."
No other words, no other comments Jyst a pure, unbridled, unforgiving chaos blast was thrown. Red light was everywhere. Desks were tossed asunder. Files and pictures were thrown wildly around. Some windows were broken open just from the sheer force.

In the instant before Shadow released the crimson power that had been building inside him, Pitch only just managed to throw up his arm and raise a barrier of pure darkness. The red energy filled the room and exploded outward, sending desks flying, shredding files and shattering windows. However, despite the destructive energy that surrounded him on all sides, Pitch was left unscathed. If anyone else had been on the floor at that time, they would most likely have been killed in the blast. Thankfully, it was early in the day and the floor had been empty.
When it was over, he allowed his shield to lower so that he could survey Shadow and the destruction around he had wrought. The Demon then turned cold, yellow eyes on the homunculus, eyes that were filled with anger and yet at the same time disgust. Shadow might have thought he had destroyed Pitch's source of power by producing his blinding light, but he never seen the true depths of his powers.
"If you truly believe Disperion's words, then you are a fool Shadow."
As he spoke, the darkness seemed to once again consolidate around the perimeter of the room, but this time they didn't approach Shadow. Instead, Pitch's own form began to change, his features and his very outline blurring until it was impossible to see any details on him. The only thing that could still be distinguished were his eyes, which had grown brighter while his other features faded.
