((Takes place after this:
The plan was simple, really. Thrax didn’t have to do a whole lot. He just had to get under the prison’s north wall, using Mercury’s handy-dandy earth powers. Then, he would use a combination of fire and magic to blow up an opening. While every inmate tried to escape and every cop nearby tried to contain them, he’d slip away with Emerald, deliver her to Cinder, then stay behind and make sure nobody tailed after them. It was short, sweet, and to the point. Of course, doing all those things might be a bit cumbersome. He would need a lot of power to blow open a section of the wall. Even Cinder wasn’t capable of something like that, which was why she had needed him. But, if doing this would get her on his side, then he was all for it.
“Alright, I think we’re here.”
Mercury’s voice brought Thrax out of his thoughts. He looked up, taking care not to misstep inside the tunnel. He and Mercury had been traveling under ground for a good forty give minutes, making sure they stayed on course and that nobody on the surface noticed Mercury shifting the earth and dirt below. Luckily, there had been no problems at all. They were at their destination. Thrax could see where the dirt ended and the heavy concrete of the prison began.
“Alright, time to work my magic,” Thrax said, grinning. “You better clear out kid. Three’s a crowd, once I get Emerald with me.”
“Right.” Mercury had done his job. Now, he was to find Cinder and wait with her until Thrax and Emerald appeared. He started to make his way back through the tunnel, but ended up pausing for a moment as he asked “You really think this will work?”
“Mercury, I’m hurt,” Thrax said, mockingly placing a hand over his heart. “Your beloved Cinder came up with this plan, after all. Don’t you trust her?”
“It’s not her I don’t trust,” Mercury said, giving the demon a look. He had faith in Cinder, but he wasn’t so sure about his newcomer.
Thrax just laughed. “Relax, boy. I’ll get Emerald to you and Cinder safe and sound. You have my word.”
Mercury sighed. It looked like he would just have to take Thrax’s word on things and hope he delivered. He continued back through the tunnel, eventually disappearing out of sight. Once he was gone, Thrax cracked his knuckles. It was time for him to shake things up.
He closed his eyes and let out a breath. He focused on the power inside him, raw and massive and red. Demons had a knack for being strong, physically and magically. Thrax concentrated, imagining he could see the building above his head, and the wall he would focus on. As his magic power grew, small red balls of energy started alight along the base of the wall. The more magic he poured into them, the bigger they got. He let it build and build and build. The atmosphere around the prison got heavy, like lightning was about to strike. Anyone inside could feel it, but they couldn’t expect what would happen next.
It was like a bomb went off. The sound could be heard from a good half mile away. The ground shook like an earthquake was passing through. Thrax smiled as he looked up. His magic had blown up just enough of the ground for him to crawl out. And once he got to the surface, he was pleased with his work.
Through the dust, he could see inmates coughing and struggling to figure out what was going on. Lucky for them, he was there to illuminate some light on the situation.
“Hello ladies and gentlemen!” he said in a booming voice, like he was a ringmaster at a circus. “It seems that a lot of you have been cooped up in detention for too long. I am here to tell you that school’s out, and it’s time to play.”
The inmates seemed confused by Thrax’s words for a moment. But, as they realized what he was implying, they started to grin. Any opportunity for a jail break was fine by them.
Shouts echoed in the distance, and Thrax could see cops running over. He made a tsking noise. “Looks like the hall monitors have come to spoil our fun.” He turned back to the inmates. “Why don’t we show them that we’re ruling this school now?”
The inmates cheered at that, which was exactly what Thrax wanted. He sat back and watched them charge at the cops, and within a matter of minutes, a battle was underway. Punches were thrown, shots were fired, magic spells were uttered. Thrax would have loved to watch, but he would have to save it for later. Right now, he had someone to find.
It didn’t take him long. Once he had made his way through the rubble, he had found a couple of inmates who were still inside, not sure whether to participate in the fight or not. And one of them was Emerald. Cinder had predicted that she would hang back, because she would have faith that someone from the Elemental Gang would come and rescue her. And it looked like she had been right.
“Emerald, is it?” Thrax asked.
The girl looked up, and her eyes narrowed. “Who are you?” she questioned, her voice hostile.
“Relax little lady, I don’t bite,” Thrax replied, holding his hands up. “My name is Thrax. Cinder sent me to fetch you.”
Those words made the hostility in Emerald’s eyes vanish, and her face took on a surprised look instead. “Cinder?”
“That’s right. Now come on. We have an escape to make.”
Before Emerald could even say another word, Thrax had grabbed her hand and had started to pull her along. All she could do was make sure she kept up with him. She was about to ask how he and Cinder had met, but her questions died when she saw what Thrax could do.
Anyone who came near them was blown away by a fire blast, or a punch to the face, or by the giant claw on his index finger. When three cops rushed him at once, Emerald saw black tentacles lash out, leaving the officers cowering on the ground like children who were having nightmares.
“Aha, here we are.”
Emerald looked forward again. Thrax had led her to the prison’s wall, which towered above them. It was made out of solid concrete, and had barbed wire at the top.
“And how are we going to get over that?” she asked.
Thrax laughed. “We’re going over it, silly girl. We’re going through it.”
“Huh?” Emerald raised an eyebrow. But she soon saw little balls of red magical energy pop up along the wall. She looked at Thrax. It looked like he was concentrating hard. And the balls of energy were getting bigger.
“What are those?” she asked, getting nervous.
Thrax only smiled before replying with “You might want to cover your ears, little lady. I planned for more than one explosion tonight.”
“Are you sure about this?” Yang asked, her arms crossed over her chest.
Jenny’s brow furrowed for a moment, then she bent down to speak to the little orange kitten at her feet. Apparently, the small animal had seen Louie earlier today, and Yang wanted to make sure they had the right location.
“Yup,” Jenny replied as she stood back up. “He says he saw Louie in the Garcon Perdu part of the city.”
Yang sighed. She was afraid of this. It looked like Louie had headed to the poorer/more dangerous side of the city in order to try and live like a street kid again. Yang just hoped he was okay.
“Alright. Let’s get down there and see if we can find him. We don’t have a lot of time before it gets dark, and I am not having you out on those streets at night.”
Yang made her way to the curb and looked around until she spotted a taxi coming down the street. She held out her hand until the cab pulled up next to her.
“We need to head to Garcon Perdu,” Yang said to the drive. “Can you take us there?”
Instead of replying yes, the driver shook his head. “No way. Haven’t you heard? Some locos managed to start a jail break. It’s complete chaos down there.”
“Wait, what?” Alarm rang in Yang’s voice. Jenny looked equally worried. Yang pulled out her phone and checked her news feed. Sure enough, she could see reports and online posts and tweets about what was going on. As the driver pulled away and continued down the street, her heart sank. If Louie was down there, he could get into big trouble. A little kid on the streets with loose criminals, he could be dead meat in seconds.
“Yang?” Jenny’s voice was small and afraid. “What are we going to do?”
Yang let out a breath. “You are going home.” She handed her phone to Jenny. “Call your mom and tell her to pick you up.” She raised her head as she looked in the direction of Garcon Perdu. “I’m going to find Louie.”
Jenny’s eyes widened. “Wait, no, I’m coming with you. We’ll find him together.”
Yang shook her head. “I can’t risk you getting hurt. Criminals are going to be running loose down there. It’s better for you to be where it’s safe.” Yang couldn’t bare it if Jenny got hurt because of her. Louie was already in danger because of what she had said to him. She didn’t want to hurt another one of her kids.
“Yang, wait-”
Jenny tried to say more, but was interrupted as Yang let loose fiery blasts from her hands and feet. She got rocketed upward like a missile. Jenny could only watch as she watched her take off, using her fire blasts to propel herself through the air. Jenny, however, was not about to back down. A determined gleam filled her blue eyes and her hands curled into fists.
A tiny meow sounded behind her. She turned around to see the kitten looking at her curiously.
“Well of course I have to go after her,” she said. “Louie’s my friend too. I have to make sure he’s okay.” She bent down to look at the kitten. “Think you can lead me to where you saw Louie?”
The kitten seemed to think for a moment, then gave an affirmative meow. Jenny smiled.
“Great. Then let’s go.”
She and the kitten hurried off down the street. It’d take longer to get to Garcon Perdu on foot, but she was determined to help. Yang had done so much for her. Jenny felt like she couldn’t just leave her to find Louie all on her own.
Far away, on the other side of town, Weiss heard about the prison break in Garcon Perdu right at the same time Yang did. She had happened to pull out her phone on the way to fencing class, and had seen the alerts and live updates on her news feed. Her brow furrowed with worry as she scrolled through the reports. A bunch of criminals loose in the streets? That wasn’t good.
She scrolled through various tweets, her worry growing as she saw what people were saying and the pictures they were posting. It was complete mayhem in there. She was just about to put her phone away and try to bring her mind back to fencing when something caught her eye.
It was a photo somebody had snapped, only ten minutes ago. It showed various prisoners of all shapes and sizes running through the streets. And Weiss recognized one of them. Moving among the inmates, with his hand wrapped around the wrist of a green-haired girl, was Thrax.
At that moment, Weiss made a reckless decision. She pocketed her phone and hurried down the street, her sword clacking at her side. She didn’t care about how crazy this was, or stupid. Thrax was out there, and she was armed with her sword. Not to mention, she happened to be wearing a ring, necklace, and earrings that had aquamarines in them, one of the types of stones that could hurt demons. This was the perfect opportunity to get back at him for what he had done at the ball. It was what she had dreamed of doing for months. Any possible consequences of this idea were pushed to the back of her mind. Her determination ruled out any fear or sensibility. She only cared about making sure all her research and training over the past few months wasn’t wasted.
Emerald was in a daze as Thrax lead her down the street. Everything was happening so fast, she could barely process it. Thrax had blown away a good section of the wall like it was nothing. Now, criminals flooded the streets and cops struggled to contain them. And amidst all the chaos, she and Thrax slipped away, using the chaos to their advantage. Sure, a cop tried to stop them every so often, or a pedestrian. But Thrax took care of them easily, especially with those black tentacles of this. Emerald didn’t know what they did, but it seemed to be pretty bad.
For a moment, all the yelling and shouting dimmed as Thrax led her down an alley. At the other end lay a black lamborghini. And inside, she could see Mercury and Cinder. Her face lit up.
“Cinder? Mercury?” She could hardly believe it. They had come for her.
Mercury got out of the backseat, putting an arm around Emerald. “Come on, we gotta hurry. Somebody might spot us.”
Emerald gave a nod. Any questions about how Cinder and Thrax had met would have to wait ‘til later. She let Mercury pull her into the backseat and shut the door behind them.
Cinder rolled down the passenger-side window, her amber eyes locking onto Thrax. “Now Thrax, you better perform your duties. If any cops manage to find us during our getaway, I’m blaming you.”
“Come on, Cinder. I’ve gotten this far. Do you really think I would back out now?” Thrax asked with a chuckle. “I’ll be causing plenty of trouble for those cops. Besides, I want a chance to spectate on my chaos. It’s so beautiful to watch.”
Cinder wasn’t sure how to feel about the obvious pleasure in Thrax’s voice, but that wasn’t a big concern now. She just gave a nod, rolled up the window, and took off. Thrax grinned as he headed back the way he came. When he reached the end of the alley, he gave a happy sigh as he watched the chaos unfold before him.
Fighting was going on all around. Sirens were blaring. Smoke rose from every other street. Thrax found it all glorious. He planned on making the whole city this way, once he found a powerful magic user to be by his side. He still felt angry over Adeline, and how much of a failure she had been. He couldn’t understand how such a powerful witch was so spineless. Hopefully, he would find somebody else soon.
Thrax was so lost in his musings about the future, that he didn’t notice a tiny person creep up behind him. It was a boy, with black hair, a gap between his front teeth, and his signature red baseball cap.
Everyone else around here had instantly fled when the jailbreak had started. Louie, on the other hand, saw an opportunity. Stuff was bound to get lost here: purses, wallets, maybe a gun he could sell. He was determined to pick up what he could and make some money off of it. And right now, he saw Thrax as a sitting duck. He had no idea that this was the demon who had crashed the LaFayette ball, or was constantly stalking Adeline. He just saw somebody who had his eyes focused on the mayhem, and away from his pockets.
Licking his lips, Louie slowly approached Thrax from behind. His fingers tingled. He hoped there was something good in there. Maybe some cash, or a credit card. He slowly reached forward.
Suddenly, Thrax’s hand shot out like a snake, clamping on Louie’s wrist. The little boy gave a yelp of surprise as Thrax whirled around, his yellow eyes glinting like a predator’s.
“Pickpocketing from a demon, are we?” Thrax gave a laugh. “You’re certainly the pluckiest little urchin I’ve ever met.”
Louie jerked his arm away, his heart in his throat. He felt too scared to run away, or call for help, or anything. Thrax was grinning at him, his mouth spread wide like a Cheshire Cat. It was one of the most fearful sights he had ever seen.
“But, nobody pickpockets from me and lives.” Thrax’s claw started to glow orange. “Sorry kid, but your luck has run out.”
Louie’s eyes widened. This was bad. Really bad. He was trapped, and he could do nothing as Thrax slowly approached him, one step at a time, his claw burning hot. He swallowed, already feeling like this was the end.
