((Takes place after this vid:
Weiss could see Thrax’s yellow eyes looking her up and down, gauging her, looking for the best place to strike. She tried not to let it intimidate her. Any other day, she would have loved the challenge. But things were different now. She couldn’t afford to take risks. If she failed, then Yang would die too. She had to play it safe and just keep Thrax busy until the cops showed up.
Thrax struck suddenly, without warning. His claws flashed like a tiger’s. Luckily, Weiss moved her sword in time to block the attack. She gritted her teeth as she pushed against Thrax. The demon only responded with a grin.
“Look at you,” he crowed. “You actually know how to use that thing. Excellent. Let’s see how well you can keep up.”
Thrax swung with his claws again. Weiss was faster, and blocked with her sword. The two went back and forth, like they were locked in a dance. Weiss found herself settling into the rhythm, going with the flow as she blocked one attack after the other. This was easy enough for her. It was just like another fencing match.
Eventually, she went on the offensive and actually struck back, swinging her sword forward. Thrax jumped out of the way and laughed.
“I must admit, I’m impressed,” he said. “Think you can handle this?”
Weiss’s eyes widened as Thrax’s hands suddenly became covered in fire. Bright orange flames danced between his fingers, and became bigger and bigger. Weiss watched in trepidation as fireballs circled around Thrax’s hands. She needed to move, and fast.
She was barely able to dodge the first fireball that came her way. She could hear it striking the wall of a building behind her, but she didn’t dare look back. She couldn’t afford to take her eyes off of Thrax for a second. A barrage of fireballs were shot at her, and she had to move this way and that in order to evade them. But she knew she had to be extra careful now. She couldn’t move in the wrong direction, or Yang might get caught in the cross-fire.
She bent over backwards, twirled on her feet, ducked down low to the ground. She moved like a ballerina, albeit this dance was a much more dangerous one than a ballet at the theater.
Weiss slid along the ground as a fireball sailed over her head. However, the next one that came her way was awfully fast, and she had no time to move. Her voodoo magic kicked in at that point, and a stone slab raised from the ground to shield her from the blast. Weiss could feel the heat from the other side of the rock. If she had been hit, she would have been severely burned.
She risked a glance back at Yang, and immediately wished she hadn’t. The blonde’s face was deathly pale, and she was out cold. But her arm was the worse. Blood trickled from the wound, as most of it had been cauterized by Thrax’s red-hot claw. But Weiss could still see the tissue, muscles, and bone inside, and it made her stomach churn.
Suddenly, there was an explosion, but not a fiery one. Weiss’s rock shield simply burst into pieces. Luckily, none of the pieces hit her. But when she caught sight of Thrax again, she wondered if she was really so lucky.
Thrax still had flames in his hands, but his most deadly weapon was out now: the long black tentacles that extended from his back. Weiss remembered seeing them at the ball. According to reports, they had made people see their worst memories and fears when they were touched by them.
“Don’t you know the first rule of combat, little girl?” Thrax taunted. “Never take your eyes off your opponent!”
Weiss scrambled to move as Thrax started attacking in full force. She wasn’t just evading fireballs anymore. Now, she had the tentacles to worry about. The dance had become even deadlier and faster than before. Weiss was pushed to her limits as she struggled to evade the attacks. She had never been in a match as long and difficult as this one, and she was starting to wonder how long she would last.
Suddenly, right at that moment, Weiss’s luck ran out. As she jumped to dodge a fireball, she realized that she had leaped too high. That extra second of air-time provided Thrax with just the right opportunity to get her. His tentacles shot out and wrapped around her arms, slamming her into the ground. But Weiss barely registered the pain. All she could see was her worst memory playing out.
The rain spattered against the window like a shower of raindrops. It certainly fit with how Weiss was feeling. She could only watch as Riku walked out the house with a suitcase in his hand. A taxi waited for him out front. He was leaving home for good this time, and Weiss could feel her heart breaking. She wiped her eyes, trying to keep herself together.
“Weiss, really, this is for the best.”
Weiss turned around and glared at her father. He and her mother didn’t seem even remotely upset about Riku leaving. In fact, they looked happy.
“Riku was an embarrassment to the family name,” Weiss’s father continued. “He would have only dragged us down. With him out of our lives, we can finally be rid of his silly ambitions.”
Weiss’s eyes filled with tears and her teeth gnashed against each other.
“Shut up! Just shut up!”
The words came out harsh and biting. A look of surprise crossed Mr. LaFayette’s face. That was all Weiss saw before she ran off, covering her face as she hurried up the stairs.
“Weiss, get back here!” her mother shouted. “You apologize to your father right now!”
But Weiss was in no mood for apologizing. She ran into her bedroom and slammed the door shut. Then, she threw herself onto her bed and started to cry. How could Riku just abandon her like this? He was her best friend, the only one who truly understood what it was like to live with Mother and Father. Now, he was gone. He had chose the BPD Others Unit over her. She didn’t matter to him anymore. She was nothing to him.
Thrax laughed as Weiss started screaming. The sound was like music to his ears. He always loved hearing it. However, there was one thing he didn’t notice: the aquamarine jewelry that Weiss was wearing.
As soon as one of his tentacles brushed against the necklace she was wearing, he felt a hot pain, like he had been burned. He gave a cry and his tentacles shrank back, like a dog that had just been hit.
When the tentacles pulled away, Weiss felt something burst inside her like a bomb. All the sadness and pain from her memories and her determination not to fail rushed out of her like a river. Her voodoo magic responded to her emotions, and they summoned the only thing that could help her in this moment.
Thrax watched in shock as dark spirits suddenly sprung from Weiss. They were dark and thin like shadows, but Thrax could still sense the malice inside them. Some looks like they had horns. Others had long fangs. But, they all wanted the same thing: to protect their mistress. When Weiss looked at him, he actually took a step back. Instead of their usual blue, her eyes were now glowing white. And she looked as angry as a maelstrom.
Weiss attacked without warning. With a battle cry, she sprang forward, her sword glinting in the light. Now, Thrax was the one who struggled to block her attacks. He tried to strike her with his tentacles, but the spirits kept them at bay. Since they were practically made of darkness, they had no fears for the tentacles to latch onto.
Almost as soon as it had begun, the battle came to an end when one last final blow was exchanged between the two. Weiss swung her sword forward. Thrax did the same with his claws. His tentacles and her shadow spirits clashed. Everything collided at once and exploded like the Big Bang.
When the dust cleared, Weiss was still standing, her chest heaving in and out as she tried to catch her breath. She still wanted more. She wanted to tear Thrax apart. She wanted to stab him with her sword again and again. However, she felt something wet trickle down her face. She touched her cheek with her hand. Her fingers came away stained red. Blood ran down the left side of her face, right over her eye.
The blood seemed to bring Weiss back to reality and away from the rage that was burning inside her. The white glow from her eyes vanished, as did the shadow spirits. Her legs trembled as she struggled to stay upright. However, the sound of laughter made her turn around.
It was Thrax. He was laughing, his head thrown back, all his teeth showing. Blood ran down the right side of his face, right over his eye. His injury mirrored Weiss’s exactly.
“Look at you. Such power. Such rage. I never expected it from someone like you.” He grinned at Weiss, sending a chill down her spine. “You’d make a good candidate.”
Weiss blinked. Candidate? What was Thrax talking about? However, she never got the chance to ask. At that moment, the wail of police sirens approached, as did the sound of several voices. The cops had finally arrived.
Thrax gave Weiss one more look before disappearing into the shadows. Weiss collapsed to her knees, her sword clattering to the ground. Using so much magic power and summoning those dark spirits had drained a lot of her energy. She found it hard to see.
“Oh my God, Weiss! Are you okay? Are you alright?”
A pair of hands held her, keeping her from falling to the ground. Weiss looked up. It looked like a rabbit, but for some reason, it had Riku’s voice. It confused her.
“Riku?”
“I need some help over here! Get an ambulance!” The rabbit called to people Weiss couldn’t see. But, his words made her remember something. Everything in her vision was fading to darkness, but she struggled to get the words out. It felt very important to her that she say this.
“Help…Yang first,” she said, raising a shaking hand to where the blonde lay. “Her…arm’s gone.”
That was all Weiss was able to say before everything went black.
Weiss could see Thrax’s yellow eyes looking her up and down, gauging her, looking for the best place to strike. She tried not to let it intimidate her.
