Well, at least Weiss knew how to smile. It took a bit of digging and self embarrassment, but Sunshine was willing to take it. It wasn't big. but Sunshine hardly knew anyone, apart from Thomas, who cracked big dopey silly grins when they were in a positive mood. It was also nice that the park was a good neutral spot for them to get to know one another. Had it been at a fancy event, like say the ball minus Thrax's intervention, it would have been tricky to even get a word in. She swept some of her gold hair back, trying to find a topic that wasn't Riku and get them on the wrong foot. "Um...I like your hair. I could never pull off that look without looking like I stepped out of the 80's." The only two updos Sunshine managed to pull off were her segmented ponytail and a long, thick braid. She had worn that braid to the ball.

"Oh. Um, thanks." Weiss's side ponytail had always been her thing. She had been wearing it that way for as long as she could remember. Her mother often tried to get her to try something else, change her hair up every once in a while, but Weiss liked it this way. Besides, not many teenagers could have silver/white hair and make it look good. "This is probably the only 80's thing my mother would accept," she said jokingly. "I can't imagine what she'd do if I tried to bring leg warmers back." Ancient fashion was one thing Weiss's mother never accepted. Her wardrobe was constantly changing, and she often made sure her daughter's did the same. Weiss had learned from a young age to never get too attached to a dress or a pair of shoes, because they'd probably be gone within the next year.

Sunshine made a face. "Ew, in this heat? Not thanks." Leg warmers were always stupid. The only time they worked was to go undercover, hide an exorcism device...boy, that sting had been weird, when she and Shadow had to go undercover at a health club to exorcise a demon from an instructor that had left strange marks on the class members. But that was all in the past. It was time think about the present, and even then, leg warmers were not welcome

Weiss had to laugh at that. Sunshine had a point. Leg warmers weren't very practical in weather like this, even if they were the most iconic thing in 80's fashion. "I guess tank tops and shorts will be brought back soon enough," she said. The weather was getting warmer every day. Sure, right now, Weiss was comfortable in jeans and a thin jacket. But once summer rolled around, everyone would be wearing sphagetti-strap dresses, sandals, and shorts. And some guys would walk around with no shirts on at all.

Sunshine nodded with a big smile. Summer was her season. Well, then again, when you could absorb the power of the sun through your hair, what other season worked? Spring...kind of helped, but it was around summer where she literally shone. Plus, it would lead to her ever famous barefoot treks. When she started at the offices, she had gotten several looks for coming in with no shoes; even Shadow had given her a fish eye. That didn't stop her from wearing flip flops and toe thongs, though

Sunshine gave a pretty enthusiastic nod when Weiss mentioned summer. No doubt it was her favorite season. If her name was Sunshine, she probably liked sunny weather, right? "Let's just hope we don't get any...unwanted guests, when we start getting tourists," Weiss remarked, gazing out towards the horizon. Nothing really happened in the summer that was as big as Mardi Gras, but Weiss wondered if any criminals would try to take advantage of the summer rush and try to pull something, like Thrax did. It made her paranoid just thinking about it. She'd already had to deal with the fiasco at her parents' ball and Mardi Gras. She didn't need anything else bringing stress into her life. And she certainly didn't need anymore scars.

"Tell me about it. I may beat my record of baking six dozen cherry-lemon cupcakes should more tourists come in." To say the tourists coming to Bellerouge were quirky was an understatenent. Voodoo fanatics, beast hunters, even a cult dedicated to Others had passed through the city. And how some people wore head to toe black in the Louisiana heat and didn't melt was beyond Sunshine's comprehension If anything, it put her more on edge they were vampires and connected to the gang that tried to do...whatever they had planned.

"Oh right, you work at the bakery," Weiss said, remembering. "We catered from you guys at the masquerade ball." It had been her parents' attempt at letting the "common folk" participate. Most came as guests. Others came in to do work, such as sell baked goods. Weiss remembered Sunshine and her family there, serving treats. They had actually been pretty decent. They were a nice change to the usual fare at her parents' parties. Of course, who knew when her parents would have another one. Sometimes, Weiss felt like they were still fretting over what had happened last time. Then again, they always planned something for her birthday, which was coming up soon. They'd probably pull out all the stops then, make sure it was good enough to make people forget what had happened at the masquerade ball.

Sunshine blinked owlishly at Weiss. "You remembered our catering? Of all the shit that went down, you remembered my family?" Her astounded face was probably something Weiss was used to. The commonfolk being recognized by "royalty". The good news was that was all that could be said without going into awkward territory.

"What? It was one of the few good things about that night," Weiss said, suddenly feeling self-conscious. She didn't know that Sunshine would react that way. Then again, some people just did. The LaFayettes were kind of like celebrities around here. And, like most celebrities, other people got tongue-tied when they were remembered by them. But Weiss felt like it was the truth. The ball had kind of gone downhill fast, but before that, there were a few good things going on. The food Sunshine's family had brought was nice. The music had been nice. And talking and dancing with Adrien had been pretty pleasant.

Sunshine blushed furiously. Part of her was giddy someone high up recognized her family. Weiss was only a few years younger than her, so maybe a kid's taste in sweets were easier to handle than some. "Thanks. I'll, um, pay compliments to the other chefs. Mom and John will...well they stressed out about it so much." She didn't realize she had her stepfather's name slip out.

Weiss raised an eyebrow. "John? Is that your mom's boyfriend or something?" People didn't exactly call their dads by their first names. Or maybe he was an uncle or something. Was Sunshine's family that big? Weiss couldn't recall. Her family was rather small. Sure, they had distant relatives or whatever, but really, it was her and her parents that made up the LaFayettes right now. Whether Riku would ever be a part of it again or not was up for debate. Weiss wasn't yelling at him as much as she used to, but she wasn't about to welcome him back with open arms yet. Part of her still felt bitter about him leaving, and she wasn't sure if she could ever forgive him for that.

Sunshine's cheeks flushed. Oops. The cat was out of the bag there. She ran a hand through one of her long blonde strands, averting Weiss' confused face. "...Kind of. He's...he's my stepfather. But I've known him since I was a kid. My real dad...he...just...well...he just up and left. Mom married John, he took me into baking and...the rest is history." Abridged history of her life, and it ended up to Weiss. The only other person who knew her life's story was Shadow, but even he couldn't locate her biological father.

"Oh. I'm...sorry about your dad." That sounded a little rough. Weiss couldn't imagine either of her parents just getting up and leaving. They liked their lifestyle too much. Besides, they'd probably die rather than get a divorce. The tabloids would be all over that in an instant, and if there was one thing her parents hated, it was negative attention. Somehow though, despite the daddy issues, Sunshine still seemed relatively happy. It was different from Weiss, who practically had everything a girl her age could dream of, yet she still felt alone and isolated. If Sunshine had a problem with shadow spirits, she could probably tell somebody in an instant. Weiss, on the other hand, felt like she couldn't tell anyone.

Sunshine's answer was a discontended sigh. Why did she tell a high up heiress that information anyways? Was it because it was an issue that had building up for some time and she had to let it out? Was it because her partner was in the hospital and she had no one really to confide this to? Her father's disappearance had left a hole in her life, a hole filled by John but when wind came that her biological father was still alive, the questions were still there. She didn't let a search consume her, but it was been a small problem that was beginning to eat at her.
