Shadow's eyes fell. Yang being this glum and lacking her spark...this wasn't in her character at all. Sure, he was one to talk, brooding after getting the one thing he had ever wanted. He stood up, ignoring the pain in his shoulder and placed a firm hand on her shoulders, and facing her so he could at his face. "Now you listen to me, Yang Xiao Long. You got the makings of greatness in you, but you have to shake the ashes off. Phoenixes rise from the ashes. You're going to come out and, well, when the time comes, you're going to spread those wings and soar. And...well, everyone's going to catch the fire burning through those wings when you're up there."

Shadow's hands were firm on Yang's shoulders, and the look in his eyes was intense. Somehow, he still thought the best of her, and was convinced that she would rise out of this, even better than she was before. Yang wanted to believe it, she really did. But she just wondered how she could ever feel whole again with her arm gone. Could she even fight anymore like she used to? Just the idea of facing off against somebody again made her stomach churn and her palm start sweating. She remembered how the adrenaline used to give her a thrill. Nowadays, the only adrenaline she felt was when she woke up from a horrible nightmare, and it made her feel sick. How could Shadow have so much faith in her, and yet so little in himself? "Phoenixes aren't invincible, though," she said. "My mom is proof of that. And...I guess I am now too."

"True. But your mom and you have something in common; you never lost sight of what was important." Yang's mother had been brave, sacrificing her life to insure the survival of her daughter. Had Belle not done anything, there would be no sign of Yang Xiao Long. Had Yang not acted, Louie would have no doubt been killed by Thrax. "And no one's invincible. Sure, I'm made up of different Others making me all a big deal, but this," he almost pointed to his bandage, and then changed tactics to touch on the white fur on his chest, which had been miraculously shampooed of blood and dirt and everything that had gotten on there in his hiding, "this is where Disparion knew where to hit. Thrax knew it, too. But the only way to get that taken care of is focusing on people who will give you that strength. I know you can do it..."
Suddenly, a memory relapse cut him off. The memory was completely different than the ones he had previously. Heck, this was the one memory he told Yang he didn't have until now. The memory was of Maria.
Maria lay wincing as the bullet hit her. Despite Shadow crying out her name and the soldier looking for a second round to reload, she reached for the small release by the pod. "I know you can do it, Shadow...Shadow, promise me...that you'll help them...help the people in that city. Give them the chance to be happy. My grandfather says the people down there have to face many problems...It's why you were created....you were made to watch over them and protect them...like a shadow."
The pod was released just as Maria's hand fell limp over the button.
The return to reality was not as whiteout as it had been before. Yang was still there, the stump of her arm still there. The depression was fading as he looked at it, instead feeling a whole new sensation; determination.
'When I get back out there, I'm going after Thrax for what he did to you. It'll be for you, it'll be to piss of Disparion even more, it'll be my way of saying he'll regret messing with this city."

Yang wasn't sure what to say. What could she say? Shadow talked about her as if she was the strongest woman around and could triumph over anything. She just couldn't see herself like that anymore. Her confidence was on a downward spiral, and she wasn't sure when, or if, she could get it back. If she couldn't become what Shadow thought she could be, would he lose faith in her? Would he see her as a lost cause? It was the same fear she had with Adrien, and everyone else she knew. Would her friends even want her around, when she was so broken? Before she could even think of a reply, Shadow suddenly stopped talking, as if something had cut him off. Yang instantly grew concerned. Was Shadow's injury bothering him? Was he getting a headache? "Shadow? Shadow, are you okay?" she asked. There was a moment when he didn't reply, but he soon did as he looked up at her. And he pretty much promised to take down Thrax. Yang's stomach churned. Getting Thrax behind bars was something she wanted, but the thought of Shadow getting hurt, or worse, trying to take him down made her terribly frightened. "Shadow, he's...he's so strong. You know that. You saw it yourself," she said. He had faced against Thrax once before, at the masquerade ball. Both of them had taking a beating. What if Shadow was the next one to lose an arm? She'd never forgive herself if he got hurt trying to avenge her.

Back in the present, Shadow was looking over at Yang who normally was concerned about his minor spaceout. Well, that was understandable, he had doen in front of her once, but this time, the memory wasn't bad or confusing. Her concerns were genuine ones, and something that he had been cocky to in the past. That ballroom brawl had been no joke, because it did hurt. Even thinking about it hurt. "Yes, I did see it. I didn't like it..." He clenched a fist, "but that's not going to stop me from being who Maria wanted me to be. I made a promise to her, which I realize now I had been doing this whole time, and I intend to keep that promise. If looking after a friend doesn't fall into that, well," he shrugged, "then that asshole will be the new normal. And I don't know about you, but that's a normal I don't like thinking about."

Yang bit her lip. "I know. I just...don't want you to get hurt." It was something she worried about a lot, for a lot of her friends. She knew when Adrien was out most nights as Chat, he was trying to help out where he could. Yang was paranoid that something would happen to him. She knew he had promised to be careful, but words couldn't affect how other people acted. Somebody could decide to hurt him, and the promise he had made would mean nothing to them. "I've already caused enough people here trouble. If Thrax hurt you because you were trying to avenge me..." Yang couldn't even finish her sentence. She didn't want anybody to end up like her, broken and helpless. She wiped at her eyes as she felt tears fill them, hating that she was so weak at a time like this. Adrien was helping people, Shadow was determined to do the same, and all she could do was sit and cry. She felt like such a burden to those around her.

Shadow just looked long at hard at Yang. He had been like this earlier, trying so hard to stay strong yet letting the true fear and emotions flood out as tears. They weren't falling, but oh, they were going to. He reached for a tissue and handed it to her. "You're not causing people trouble when they choose to help you get through that trouble, Yang." Okay, that would just circle back to ten minutes earlier when they both argued who was the most pathetic. Drop the crime act, and, well, be a friend. Chat did it with Yang by consoling her and acting as a lover, now he had to take back the role he was to Yang when he wasn't a cop; a friend slash father figure. "...what times does Tony's open? When I get out of here, the first thing I'm going to do is get you a slice with extra peppers. It's got to be better than the hospital food here."

Yang chuckled a little as she wiped her eyes with the tissue Shadow handed her. Of all the things to cheer her up with, he chose pizza? She had to admit, he did know her well. Besides, she, Shadow, and Sunshine had had a pretty decent time the last time they had gone there. Although, Yang doubted Sunshine would come along this time. It looked like things were a little tense between Shadow and the police, and unfortunately, that probably included Sunshine. Yang hoped that things turned up for them though. They were a good team. "Eleven, I think," she replied. "That sounds nice." Going to a familiar environment should be doable for her. She'd be more likely to relax and less likely to freak out. She hoped that didn't happen. She was already worried enough about getting triggered while out with Adrien. Before saying anything more though, there was the sound of somebody clearing her throat. Yang looked up to see her nurse, who promptly informed her that she needed to get back to her room. Yang had to admit, she had been here for a while. And no doubt both she and Shadow had a bit to think about. "i'd better get going," she said. "I'll be looking forward to that pizza, though." She managed a small smile, which she hoped would reassure Shadow, at least a little bit. She didn't know what she did to deserve a friend like him, but she was glad she had him.

It was ether get Chat to come again or pizza. Given the shit going on, option B was probably the best option. So, eleven, huh? Well, that was a good timing for him. But before the lightheartedness after so much drama could continue, a clearing voice cut him off. A nurse was frowning in their direction. Looks like Yang had someone escorting her around. He half-smiled, half-smirked. "Oops." Yang dismissed herself, and the smirk became a full fledged smile, even if it was tiny, and nodded. As he watched his friend leave, he looked skyward, asking, "Well, Maria, looks like you got what you wanted after all." ((end thread))
