Jane almost laughed. Her first day of school, or rather sitting in and watching as a teacher worked so she could use it in her lessons. Soon she would be the one teaching. She just had to go through just a little longer in school. Only a few months and she would have her degree. She was so close to her goal, she could almost taste it. She was perhaps as giddy as some of the students (on their first day of school). They were subdued now since it was later in the year and they had gotten used to the whole day to day life activities. School no longer had that magic wonder it did when they were little. It was just one more thing for them to dread, along with homework. Because when the teacher who she was shadowing announced it, there were a few soft groans.
Lessons had gone well. She could happily report that it had gone off without incident. Then came lunch and recess. Lunch was loud and crowded. The food looked no better than when she was in school so she was quite glad she had packed her own meal instead of deciding to get whatever the students did. She just had to watch over the students and make sure none of them broke an arm while leaping off the playground. It should be easy. She almost shook her head. She could almost hear her father recanting stories of her and her brother's dare devilry as children as she watched these little pseudo monkeys clamber all over the playground and each other. At least they would be too tired to cause any problems during the second half of the day.
As she made her rounds, through the mulched grounds, she noticed one little girl alone. None of the other kids were playing with her. She wasn't sure what spurred her forward - the fact that she was part troll and they were naturally inclined towards children or because she had been in that position before. When she had been in foster care, it was hard for her to make friends, mostly because once she got comfortable, a lot of the families decided they no longer wanted her so she would move on to the next family, the next school and start the process all over again.
"Hey there," she said softly. "Don't you want to go play with the other kids?"

American schools were strange. That was the conclusion Rhona had come to shortly after her first day at her new school started. While she liked the fact she didn't need to wear a uniform everything else seemed so weird and stiff. Her teacher made her introduce herself to the class, and the young Selkie had to do her best to remember to speak slowly and clearly because she had an 'accent' now. And the lessons were so constricted! The teacher merely talked and wrote on the board while the students read from the text books, copying exactly as it was shown. During mathematics, she solved the problem differently than the rest because it was easier for her and she was scolded for it while the others snickered.
Hardly anything was engaging or interactive as they were taught. It was beyond frustrating. The only thing of any interest, and actually new to learn, was history. She didn't know anything about American history, so learning about how it was founded was interesting enough. Though reading it all in a text book was rather dull. At her old school they would engage in discussion and take little trips around their town as they learned about its history. She wasn't even sure how accurate some of the things in the textbook was, but when she asked the teacher told her not to question what was written.
Easy to say, Rhona was not enjoying herself.
And that didn't even begin to cover the fact that everything was named differently. Like how it was called Elementary school instead of Primary. And she was in fifth grade instead of P6. And the lunches were meager and borderline gross. She would have to make a point to her father packing her a lunch instead. And the only time she was getting to go outside was for something called Recess.
Which was where she was now. Standing all alone as she watched other children run around the hard tar covered ground and climbing all over play equipment, playing games she didn't know or didn't care for. And she didn't know anyone, never got the chance to really talk to any of her classmates during lessons. I'd rather be drawing anyway. she thought to herself. But Da made her leave her sketch book at home. So she could concentrate making friends. Easy for him to say. she thought with a sigh.
Suddenly a voice spoke out beside her. Blue eyes blinked as the blonde child turned to see an adult looking at her curiously. At her question, Rhona felt her shoes suddenly very interesting to look at as she gave a little shrug. "Am no familiar with the games." she said, accent thick, as she kicked a little pebble that was beside her shoe.

A heavy accent and a seemingly shy girl. Those made for a hard time fitting in with other kids. Almost like that young woman that her father was so fond of - Namine - the artist from the BPD. Jane liked the woman just fine, she was just painfully timid. All the other kids seemed to have paired off except for this little girl. Which left a few explanations - she was either new to the class or she didn't get along well with the other students. Jane had a feeling it was the first.
"That's okay," Jane soothed. "You don't have to join in right away."
She stepped a little closer so that she was beside the little girl, watching all of the other students. She didn't want this little girl to be all alone. New schools were tough. Especially when things things were different - like a different language or manner of speaking. So Jane played it natural and calm instead of scolding the girl for something that wasn't her fault.
"My name is Jane, what's your name, sweetie?"
She was channeling her father the best she could. No one was better with kids than her dad. He could hush a crying child, coddle the hell out of a kid who long past insisted they were too old for it and still be the coolest person Jane knew. She would say it all to his face if prompted. She never got tired of gloating about the man.

Relief filled Rhona as, what she assumed was, the teacher told her she didn't need to join in right away. She wasn't even normally one to be shy, but everything was so new and so different. She didn't know where to even begin. And while Da assured her that there would be people who weren't human, called Others locally, she could tell there was still quite a lot of humans at school. Did she still need to act like a normal girl? Was it really ok to let people know she was a Selkie? What if they didn't like her? Or thought she sounded funny? Though if anyone asked her, they were the ones who sounded funny.
When the woman introduced herself, the blonde girl gave a smile and grabbed the hems of her dress as she curtsied. "Ah'm Rhona." she introduced, giggling a little before resuming her original posture. Jane seemed like a rather nice lady, and it made the girl feel at ease. "It's nice tae meet ye Ms. Jane." she added, as she folded her hands behind her back and grinned.

"What a pretty name," Jane said.
It was a little more creative than her own name. It also rolled off the tongue a little better than Jane. Though, some people did call her Janie (namely her father). Rhona was a sweet girl and polite to boot. That was certainly refreshing. Her parents had certainly done their jobs right when they were taking care of her and that pleased Jane immensely. Considering that some of the kids had already been sent back inside for misbehaving. Bullying and trying to pick fights over stupid things like who got to be on the swing set and for how long. Kids these days. She would have to learn what to do with them once that came along, but for now, she would rely heavily on some of her more 'troll' based instincts.
"It's very nice to meet you too, Rhona." she said. "Would it be okay if I stayed over here with you? It's my first day of school."
Kids liked jobs. They liked feeling like they were doing something important. At least the kids she had seen in the past. They liked being important and having attention lavished on them. They felt important when they were seemingly the ones in power and in charge. If the other kids weren't going to give Rhona a chance on her first day, then Jane was going to look out for the little one. She had spent too many 'first days' alone on her own so she wouldn't let a little girl be by herself on any day.
