Sunshine put her paintbrush down. With spring approaching, she had started going down to Raoul Park all the more to get inspiration for her paintings. And spring meant one thing; more wildlife. She had started painting two rabbits that had looked at her during her lunch break. Well, correction. She had sketched them, and was just now filling in the colors. The gray-brown taupe coloration cam through, and was still on her brush. Her hand was cramping. Anymore and she just might get carpal tunnel. Or, something along those lines.
Rabbits. Why did the cute animals keep coming up to her? Was it because there were so many in the park? They were popping up everywhere. But it also kept her thinking about … about him.
Sunshine shook her head. Oh, grow up, Rachel, she scolded herself. You have a crush on him, that's all it is. You guys had that nice dinner together, but don't go planting ideas in your head. They may or may not come true, But ... but then again...
A knock on the door made the brush skid one way. The squiggle of brown was glaring at her, and she set it aside. She'd worry about that later. All that mattered was seeing who was at the door. She descended the stairs and checked the peephole.
Yes, there was someone outside. Who looked homeless. The pants were two sizes too big for the figure. Really, it was the only clothing they were wearing. The good news was the smell of blood wasn't wafting through the door nor was there any sign of a struggle. It couldn't be a vampire or werewolf then. Was it a demon? Halfing...of some kind? Voodoo master? She wouldn't know unless she opened the door. Her hand fell on to the latch. She took a breath, lifted the latch, and opened it.
The last time she had seen Riku, he had been a rabbit. The person at the door, one hands on his too big of pants, looking at her with widened eyes beneath silver-white hair, looked at her imploringly. But how was she going to let him so easily? This could be a shifter posing as someone she trusted to get at her.
"Riku?" Sunshine said his name hesitantly.
The half-dressed young man looked up at her. It was then that she saw something that she hadn't expected it. Well, back when they talked, it had been tricky to tell because of the fur and, well, other things, but he had something else in his expression. She looked around each corner. Well, if he was being followed, they either had some damn good glamour or he had scared them off before coming to her place for sanctuary. The good Samaritan won out, and she pulled him inside and nodded at him to rush up to her main room as she bolted the door outside shut.
The dimmed lights and paintings of the living room greeted them both. The shutters of the window were closed, so thankfully, no one could peek in. Riku was panting heavily, practically shivering. As Sunshine shut the door, she stood close by, unsure of what to do. He looked practically mad. Was he drunk? On some kind of drug? A voodoo experiment going wrong, which would explain the human appearance?'
She walked over slowly, grabbing a hand. A small pulse went through her. Even on the date and as a rabbit, they had never held hands. Now, she was supporting it to ensure he didn't crumple into a heap on the floor.
"Riku, are you okay?" Sunshine went into support talk mode. "Riku, it's okay, you're safe. It's okay." That came out like a continuous beat. She brushed the hair from his eyes. "It's okay...." She repeated, softly, nurturingly, "it's okay...."
There had been so much that had happened in the last few hours, but Riku was too wrapped up in his own head to say it. Aqua hadn't told him anything about the setup with Weiss. Weiss had berated him, yelled at him. He fought for her to get out of the house, away from his monsters of parents. Instead, she had chosen to stay. Then Aqua, who had finally admitted she was seeing him as a replacement for Terra, her last partner who was dead and buried...the frustration had reverted him from rabbit to human...he wasn't sure how. Aqua had said there was a cure, angry tears, and she had gotten him to be exactly that. He just remembered storming out of the apartment, Weiss calling after him but him not caring anymore. He couldn't get a cab, so he had to walk home, ending up at Sunshine's loft.
Now he felt her touching his face. She was saying something to him, and he was coming out of his mild-rage fog to register it. She was saying, "It's okay," over and over. He didn't bother correcting her, that it wasn't okay, but something in her voice, how sure she was, and...he was able to look her in the eyes, blinking to get the last bit of annoyance towards Aqua out.
"Sun..." He murmured.
Sunshine smiled weakly. He was coming to, and had called her the one name that she knew set him apart from an imposter. Riku was human again. She had so many questions, but the broken look in his eyes made her realize berating him now was bad. More importantly, there were tear streaks on his cheeks. She grabbed a handful of tissues and dried them.
He made no objections to it. All that mattered was he could feel her touching him. There wasn't any fur to block it, or make it seem awkward or unusual. He was in front of her, exposed in more ways than one. As she lowered her hands, filled with tissues, he gently swiped a blonde hair from her face. He looked at her big green eyes. Even when worried, she maintained that slight glimmer of joy in them. He had found that glimmer one of the many things that drew him to her that night they had gone out. She hadn't seen him as the poster boy most girls he went out with had. She had so much to offer, and this time, she was offering something he hadn't received from too many people up in the highest ranks of society.
Genuine compassion.
Sunshine took a step back, crumpling the tissues at the floor. Her heart was racing at so many speeds. She had a boy in her room. A boy she liked but had never said out loud, except maybe to...Aqua. She'd have to call Aqua. The Seelie had to know her partner was okay. Or, physically he was okay. She wasn't sure mentally or emotionally.
"Are you okay?" Yes, sure, repeat yourself, she scolded herself.
Riku hesitated. He was well aware of how indecent he was. Lord forbid he accidentally drop his pants in front of a cute girl. She probably thought he was insane. The most he could do was try to play it cool. "It's...complicated."
"Yeah, the...new look...or is it old look, I don't know, sort of gave it away," Sunshine nodded.
Riku walked up to her, and tilted her face to look up at him. Blue and green eyes locked onto one another. They didn't say anything for the longest time. He swiped a thumb against her cheek. Oh, how great it was actually having an opposable thumb, to hold her hand with a human hand. Sunshine's fingers closed around the one he held. The free hand came to the back of her head, pulling her gently forward. The next move he took was something he had wanted to do after that date, but couldn't because of being covered in rabbit fur.
He kissed her.
It was soft pressured and warm. Her lips tasted like pink lemonade in the summertime. But instead of scaring her even more, he let the kiss linger on the lips. Her own lips pucked to meet his, albeit slowly. This must have been her first kiss, because she still had her eyes closed and lips puckered when he backed up, His made a quiet chuckle, and she opened her eyes, blinking.
"Oh. Uh..." Her cheeks turned bright pink. Riku was pretty sure from the heat on his cheeks he was blushing too. She ran a hand through her hair, stroking one of the locks. "Should I...take you home? Wait, no, you didn't get me your address, can I have your address so I can do that? Should I call someone to come get you?"
Riku shook his head. "Don't worry about it, Sunshine. What I need is just...a roof over my head and someone I trust."
Sunshine glanced over to the kitchen. Someone he could trust. That was why he came here. Something must have happened between him and Aqua, which was why he came here. She'd talk about it when he was ready, because obviously, he was not. "I'll make you some tea." As she was walking by, she asked over her shoulder, "mint work for you?"
He smiled. "Yeah."
Two minutes later Riku was reclining on the lavender-hued loveseat in Sunshine's loft. A plush blanket was draped over his shoulders, and he was watching steam curl from the sunflower painted mug she served his tea in. She was in the storage closet, grabbing an extra pillow and a blanket.
"Sorry I don't have any backup clothes for you," she apologized as she came out.
"Don't worry about it, Sunshine," he reassured her.
"Riku..." Sunshine's tone became serious. "You do know I'll be asking about this later." She sat next to him, folding her hands over one another and sighing. "I can't imagine how much is on your mind right now."
Riku's lip twiched. "You have no idea." He brought a hand on rest on hers, and she looked up at him. "I do really appreciate you letting me stay here tonight."
Sunshine blushed and ducked her eyes down. He was sure this was embarrassing for her as it was for him. They were both acting natural about this thing, but deep down there was a tiny bit of nervousness. He liked her, and clearly she liked him. It just took turning back to a human from a rabbit by tears of anger that made him get out the feeling of wanting to kiss her out.
"Just pull apart the curtain if you need anything," she whispered quietly, nodding to the purple curtains that closed off her bedroom from the area. The lavender scented candle burning in a small holder sputtered a bit, and she looked back up at him. "and try not to make this a habit," she teased.
Rabbits. Why did the cute animals keep coming up to her? Was it because there were so many in the park? They were popping up everywhere. But it also kept her thinking about … about him.
