"You want the respect, you earn it," Jane replied.
She could say she begrudgingly respected Shadow, even if she thought he was stupid for being out in the bayou on his own and no backup for miles except for her who only just happened upon him. What would have happened if she hadn't driven by? Homunculus on a stick. That's what. It's like the guy had a martyr complex. A 'if I get hurt at least no one else has to' sort of mentality. A need to sacrifice everything for the 'greater good'. He did bring up the innocents that Croc would kill if he had been allowed to wander free. She wasn't sure she liked that. Especially since he went and played the bait to a creature that - if Croc got his hands on him - could literally bite him in half and rip him to unidentifiable bits.

Well, respect was better than being hated. For now, Shadow would have to go with that. It could explain Jane's mentality towards the cops. Her dislike of them could be broken down if she felt they earned her respect. He had been nothing but respectful to her, and well, the reward was not getting insulted and actually talking to someone. Yeah, she was definitely Omar's daughter. He had won the troll's respect by being the only cop who listened to the supposedly "condemned" miscreant. The truth had been Omar didn't commit what he was accused for; it had been another troll, who had been suspended from the area when the identity was confirmed.
His police com rang, and he begrudgingly picked it up. On the line were talks from cops scrambled in the bayou, still on Croc's trail. He phoned in, reporting, "Griffiths, 1st Others Unit, reporting in. Killer Croc's in custody." A few angry insults were thrown over the phone, and he scowled. It always happened; he teamed up with non Others cops and got berated even when doing what they asked. He couldn't win. "Northeast bend of the bayou. I'll be waiting. Yeah, ten minutes is fine. Yes, he's been sedated, this isn't a suicide mission!"
He shut the com off, massaging his upper temple. He didn't dare repeat anything they had said back

"Guess we wait." she said.
She folded her arms across her chest and leaned back against the hood of her truck. She had been there for it so far. There was no point in her dashing off now, just in case Croc did wake up. From the sounds of things, Shadow was being lectured for doing his job. Which was stupid because it seemed he could actually do it right. She would never understand Others and humans. She passed as human. No one would look at her and thing 'oh, that's a troll' but she had more instinctual needs like her desire to go hunting, which had been nicely satisfied over the course of the day. Her dad wouldn't believe that she helped catch Croc.

"...Are you sure you want to stick around? I can understand if Sunshine was here, but by myself? I'm just a stick in the mud."
That and he didn't want Jane to get in trouble. It was one thing to have her help out, it was another for cops to accuse her of stepping into "matters that didn't concern her". Some rules had to be broken, and Jane was capable of protecting herself and had a gun if Croc woke up. According to the watch, he tranquilizer would wear off in 45 minutes. Shadow wasn't much of a conversationalist, that much was certain. Sunshine had been the friendlier of the duo. But her attitude was wearing off on him, probably.

"Guess that makes two of us," Jane shrugged.
She knew that the badge was often off putting for her and she did come off a little harsher than intended but the officer wasn't a bad guy. Just a bit reckless. But she wasn't exactly any better. She was brash and she didn't think things through. She certainly jumped at the chance to lecture and belittle a guy who literally just fought a crocodile man with her. She scratched the back of her neck. It would be poor manners to just leave now. Her dad didn't raise a girl with poor manners.
"You ever considering hunting for sport?" she asked. "Seems like your cop stuff would help you be good at it."

Shadow returned the shrug with a quiet "pft" and leaning against a tree for support.
In a good way he and Jane had something in common, whether he liked to admit it or not. That being, apart from being the quiet types who let their actions speak for them, that both of them were stubborn. Almost to a fault stubborn. The kind where someone ran into trouble and didn't care who got hurt without thinking situations through stubborn. She wasn't just going to leave him in case Croc woke up.
"The only sport I do with my guns is skeet," he answered.

"And here I thought you'd be a gun range sort of guy," she mused.
Okay, so she helped catch a serial killer and now she was talking guns with the police officer who did it. Good news was she was talking to the guy and not trying to bite his head off, considering the last time she ran into him, it was at the Lafayette ball. She had berated him for not doing his job because Yang got hurt. Because of Thrax. Who was still out there. Who had hurt Yang again. She took a deep breath to keep herself from getting mad about that. Not a good topic to touch. So she would leave that one alone.
"What are you doing out here on your own?" she asked. "You had backup. Why weren't they with you?"

"Oh I tried the gun range once. Once was enough. They treated Others worse than the targets." Not that people shot at him, but the dirty looks at anyone showing signs of being different would have counted. The only range he shot atvwaavin the training yards of the offices; no wasted money, more pleasant company.
Jane asked why he was out alone despite having backup, and Shadow glanced at the way the officers would be coming. His stubbornness should have left him mangled or gotten him killed. His unit had other problems to worry about. He was giving them more time to focus on bigger issues. Issues like Thrax, or the Elemental Gang. The streets would be more their territory, and his frustration would only cause more damage.
"You could say I made mistakes that isolated myself from the squad," he answered.

"Then you need to find one run by an Other." she said.
It was stupid. This human 'supremacy' idea that some people carried around. People were people. As simple as that. It didn't matter if they had tails or spikes or had peculiar things about iron or churches. They were still people. They were smart enough to make decisions on their own. As a sentient life form they should be able to make their own decisions and not get treated like scum just because they looked a little different. It was something that frustrated her deeply. Her dad didn't look human and she knew there were people out there who would have loved to hurt him for that. He didn't choose how he looked. No one did.
"Then you should be talking to them and not risking your life out here." she pointed out. "You can't 'atone for your sins' if you're being digested by Killer Croc over there."

Shadow wanted to object so bad. She had no idea that most of the shit in this city had been his doing. That talking to the team wasn't enough. He had pulled his weight and had yet to see any officers, apart from Sunshine, Aqua and, he hated to admit, Riku, pulling theirs. But all of the sudden, the high pitched blurp of the siren echoed. Red and blue lights spun around. Well, here they came. The Calvary. He looked back at the strong-willed, blue eyed brown haired gun toter. He has only one thing left to say. "Uh...well...thanks. Again."

"It's been... fun?"
That was one word for it. She had wanted to go hunting and Shadow had literally brought the hunt to her. The biggest predator in the bayou was captured thanks to the two of them. The city was safer now that Croc was locked away. She had to hand it to Shadow, he did his job and she might have been a little too hard on him the first time they met. She had been terrified for Yang. Speaking through emotions though had seemingly been a mistake. Even worse, he was a friend of her father's and she had insulted him a few times. But she got off the hood of the truck and headed around to the cab. It was time for her to go collect her bounty on her snakes.

"...Yeah. It...actually has."
And Shadow was telling the truth. He would have preferred taking out Killer Croc alongside Sunshine, but Jane wasn't a bad replacement. Plus, it shook off whatever trauma had been there after seeing Croc nearly bite Sunshine's face off, too. Jane getting bit would have cost him a lecture from Omar, but this girl was capable of looking out for herself. In a way, they both helped one another; her helping him catch a crook and him getting her hunter's adrenaline pumping. Win-win situation, and she said it herself, respect had been earned. ((end thread))
