Summer had officially come to the city of Bellerouge and people were celebrating in their own small ways. Some held parties that went late into the evenings, others cooked out on grills and still more made their way to the parks to enjoy the weather.
For Ralph, however, life was pretty much the same as it had been. Business was doing fairly well and he was happy enough, but with no one to celebrate with it seemed silly to partake in such activities. He hadn't seen any of his friends from the BPD in quite some time and everyone seemed to be busy with their lives at that time. He knew it wasn't a big deal and that sooner or later he would run into a familiar face but for some reason that evening he had felt rather lonely.
To try and ward off the sudden sensation, he had decided to go for a walk along the riverfront, thinking that walking amongst other people might help him feel less lonesome. However, it didn't seem to be working. Even now as he moved along the path before him, everyone else on the street seemed to have someone to be with or talk to. Shoving his hands deeply into his pockets, he debated on whether he should stop somewhere to grab some dinner that evening or just call it quits and head home. After all, being amongst all these strangers only seemed to make his sense of loneliness worse.

The trauma of being attacked by Roman Torchwick's thugs had left Elsa in a sense of absolute unrest. She was swiping her platinum blonde hair from her eyes, revealing the lack of sleep she had been getting.
It was far different than the people enjoying the rare, pleasant weather summer time in Louisiana had to offer. In this particular instant, lovers were walling along the banks of the river. Under the red sky, the water seemed to ripple black. There were times when the lit lamps struck the water, and it glittered like obsidian. Elsa shuddered, trying not to think too hard on the heat and the intense exhaustion seeping through her body. The last thing she needed was to wake up in the water.
She glanced over at a couple kissing passionately under a street lamp. The kind of passionate where you didn't know if you should be happy or disgusted by the smashing of lips. But instead of making a scene, Elsa continued on. A huge figure was coming up around the path. She had only seen one person with a stature that big.
"Ralph?" Elsa half called, half asked.

Omar was feeling lonely and restless this summer evening. It was on a warm day like this that Cindy and Danny had...Danny and Jane had wanted to go get ice cream with Omar, begged even. But Omar had his work to think of. Little did he know that day that when he got back his girlfriend and son would be dead and his daughter missing. If only he had taken Jane and Danny out for ice cream instead.
So to escape the dark memories and knawing guilt he fled out of his apartment and hurried down to the river front. Maybe walking for a bit would clear his head. He saw women with strollers and lovers holding hands and it really wasn't helping his memories. Maybe he should call up his band and drown his sorrows in a good practice session. He was about to turn back when he noticed a pale woman and a giant. Elsa and Ralph, both hard people to mistake for anyone else. Omar was pretty sure back when Ralph was still on the force he'd arrested Omar once. Or six times. And Elsa was just someone Omar needed to talk to. He stuck his hands in the pockets of his ratty jeans and walked over to them. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything, but you two are just who I wanted to see"

Ralph hovered outside a local food joint he frequented when he had the money and time, debating on what to buy if anything for that evening. However, his thoughts were interrupted when a familiar voice spoke behind him from a short distance.
The Giant blinked once before turning around and quickly spotting the familiar form of Elsa even amongst the crowded thoroughfare. Ralph momentary surprise was quickly replaced with a pleasant feeling. It looked like going out for a walk to try and cure his sudden spout of loneliness had been right after all.
"Hey there, Elsa. Out for an evening stroll or something?"
However, before he could say more or the young lawyer respond another person had suddenly stepped up to join them where they stood. The new arrival was a troll from the looks of it and it took Ralph a moment to place his face. He frowned down at the man for a moment before remembering who he was, a guy he had pulled into the BPD station on a few occasion. Back when he had worked for Bellerouge's finest, this orange-haired troll had been brought in for some small things, mostly misdemeanors and little else.
However, that didn't mean Ralph had been happy having to deal with him.
A moment later, the Giant realized what the troll had said and felt his face blush against his will at the possible suggestion that he and Elsa were on a date or something.
"And what exactly do you want to see us for..... Omar, isn't it?"
Ralph's pleasure at running into Elsa had quickly evaporated and he stood with his arms crossed, looking down at the troll and trying not to let his annoyance show on his face.

Apparently Elsa stuck through dark crowds like a sore thumb just as much as Ralph did, because he recognized her even while she was just standing by the street lamp. She waved at him, coming over.
"You could say that," she answered. Boy, did she have quite the story to tell him. That Roman Torchwick had been targeting her at her family's mausoleum when she wanted to pay respects on their wedding anniversary. How the thugs tried to kill her, and while could fend them off, she had help from Wally West. She was about to get to the meat of the story, when someone else joined them.
Elsa blinked in surprise. Omar LaRue was coming to talk? Well, yes, they had briefly talked at Sunshine's surprise party and the impromptu manhunt for Shadow, but to come over like they had known each other for years? It surprised her and at the same time flattered her.
"Don't get us wrong, we're glad to see a familiar face, but both of us?" she asked. "I hope not for the same reason, we wouldn't want to get tangled in too much?" she laughed nervously.

Omar glanced at Ralph's face, obviously trying not to scowl but doing it anyway. Omar snorted. "Relax, I'm not here to cause trouble. And no, Elsa, not for the same reason" he laughed slightly and looked down at his feet for a moment, unusual for him he was feeling rather bashful. "No, I have two things I need to be looked into. The first is, Elsa," he looked up at her. "I want to adopt Namine. Now, she's an adult and I'm an Other so I'm not sure how I'll go about it, but I want to make her my daughter officially as she practically is already" He turned to Ralph. "This is going to be harder, I think. But could you find the cop that put my daughter up for foster care?" Omar's green eyes hardened to flint. "I want that sucker's badge. I was a good dad and I lost the joys of watching her grow up. I've given up on finding her little brother's killer, but this will at least help our bitterness I hope"

When Elsa approached him, he couldn't help noticing that she looked far more strained and anxious then usual. Normally she only looked that way when she was working on a very big, very high profile case and as far as he knew she wasn't. So was something else bothering her?
However, Ralph didn't feel like asking about it in front of Omar and instead waited to see what he wanted from the two of them. When the troll mentioned wanting to adopt Namine, Ralph couldn't help but feel a great deal of surprise and a certain amount of concern for the young woman. He had come to feel rather protective of her since their last meeting and didn't really know enough about Omar to know if he would be a good person to look after her.
And yet before he could even start to question why Omar wanted to adopt Namine, he was asking the Giant if he could take up a case for him. Ralph raised an eyebrow as the troll explained how he wanted the officer who had placed his daughter in foster care found and his badge taken. He might have been rather harsh in his response except Omar mentioned how he had largely given up on finding his son's killer and just wanted this justice done.
Ralph grew rather silent for a time, the sound of the groups passing them on the path loud and yet somehow distant.
"I don't know how much use I could be to you in that regard. Yeah, I worked for the BPD as you well know and yeah, I'm a P.I. now but trying to get a cop's badge taken away...... that's gonna take a lot of time and energy and might not even work. Although heaven knows, some of those excuses for cops don't need to be patrolling the streets."

Elsa's blue eyes widened. Omar, adopting? But he had his own kids. Or rather, one of them. There had been no traces back tot he other child who had been unlawfully abducted. But time and time again, he proved to be more than just the grumpy troll with an electric guitar.
"I can schedule a time so we can finalize the process. I'll have to go to the court and the get the adoption papers, and, well, we'd need her consent as well."
Adopting a person was far different than adopting a pet. With that, you could choose the one you wanted, sign a paper saying they were your property and be on your way. Human beings had voices, and those voices needed to be around to say whether or not the guardian interested in taking care of them was right. She didn't doubt Omar would be an excellent guardian, but Namine was the person she had the most worry for.
No sooner had she given then answer then Omar asked Ralph to look into a private case. Elsa stayed silent, knowing her place. If she stuck her nose into a P.I.'s case without their consent, it could spell trouble in the courts. The last badge she knew that had been taken had been Terra Nobel's, but that was after he had been murdered.

"She asked if I could adopt her, so I doubt she would say no" Omar chuckled to himself and nodded. "If I have to pay you I can. I want Namine happy, that's one of my biggest concerns" He nodded silently at Ralph's explanation. "I'm old. I have kids running around all over the world. But I got to see them grow up into unique people. I wanted to raise Danny and Jane with Cindy. I got deprived of that. Views on Others was really bad then and I lost both my kids. I thought they were both dead, even as I never stopped looking for Jane, there was always that fear...I don't care how long it takes, or even if I don't get their badge, I just want to look them in the eyes and ask them why they took my Jane away from me"

Ralph listened silently to Omar as he spoke, his face strangely emotionless as the troll explained his desire to have the cope that had taken his daughter found and tried. Once Omar had grown silent, the Giant couldn't help but glance slightly at Elsa. Investigating officers was always a slippery slope to climb and he wasn't certain in that moment if his past connections with the BPD would make an already difficult case even harder.
Luckily, Elsa was right there. And being a lawyer, she would most likely be able to answer the legal questions he might have about such an investigation.
"What do you think, Elsa? Any reason I legally can't look into this for Omar?"

Pay? It was rare someone offered payment for a charity as opposed to defending. She was so used to fighting for rights, she wasn't used to getting to quieter actions. Adoption was a cakewalk compared to shouting at criminals in courts.
"Because this is important for you both," she said wistfully, "I'll half the price."
Tearful, joyful tears, turned to caution. Ralph asked what the legal bindings to the investigation would be. Deep down, she was flattered that she was the lawyer being asked this. But flattery would have to wait. She had to deliver news first.
"The only challenge I can see is finding willing officers for backup and making the official arrest when you do find the scum. The department can't turn away an investigation request, like it or not. That doesn't mean they'll be trying to hide detectives from helping you."

"Oh, you don't need to" Omar was quick to say. "I have a small fortune stored away. I can pay you full price and more for this, it's that important to me Namine is happy" He was more than willing to compensate Elsa fully for this. She deserved every penny for being willing to take this case, especially with the species differences between Namine and Omar.
Omar nodded slowly at the assessment made by Elsa. "...I know a few officers that might be able to help..." he said slowly. "Shadow was there and we're on friendly terms. If Ralph asks him, I'm pretty sure he can help out. Aqua" here he turned slightly pink "Aqua can also help us. I think she'd be willing to dig through old files and see"

Ralph nodded at Elsa words, not doubting for a moment what she told him. When it came to legal matters and the rules of laws, she was always a reliable and steady person to call up and he was certain that if anyone could see Omar allowed to adopt Namine, it would be her.
When Omar also threw out the names of possible officers that might assist him in the case, he couldn't help but give a chuckle.
"Yeah, Shadow and I go way back so I'm sure he'll be more than willing to help. As for Aqua, she came to me with her own case not too long ago. I found some info that finally helped solve it after years of dead ends and the BPD declaring it closed. I have a feeling she'll be more then willing to help me out with this one."
The Giant couldn't hide the smirk on his face as he said this last bit. He hadn't missed the blush on Omar's long face when he mentioned the Seelie's name.

"Forgive the, er, lack of words, but it seems those two always were reliable when it came to cold cases."
The joke, she admitted, was a bit clumsy. But the truth was, both Detective Griffiths and Detective Malone had been involved in almost all the cases Ralph took. Shadow and Ralph's history had retained a healthy one. He also was one of the more stubborn cops that wouldn't take 'no' for an answer. Most cold cases winding up to him either got solved or had a new piece of the puzzle added.
At seeing the gruff troll's face turn pink, she bit back a laugh, which turned into a very unladylike snort.

"What? Why are you two..." he touched his face, which was warm and realized he was blushing. Well that didn't happen often. He smiled ruefully. He could guess what caused the blush; Aqua. He sighed. "She doesn't even know I feel this way" he said wistfully. "I'm doing my absolute damnedest, but she just looks right through me. We're good 'friends' and that seems to be all we're going to be"
