Yang sniffled, trying not to feel so emotional. Moses admitted that Vanitas was everything he didn't want to be. How could he still fall for someone like that? Yang couldn't understand. Vanitas didn't help the situation by acting snarky. His voice still retained the same bitter and condescending tone that she remembered. Despite Moses's insistence that Vanitas was trying to change, Yang felt like she couldn't see it. He pretty much put it bluntly that Moses liked her, therefore she was safe from him. "Looks like the new leaf is getting turned over slowly," she commented. "How long has this even been going on? When did you two meet?"

Moses shot Vanitas an angry look. He was trying to help the guy not get toasted by Yang, god dammit! Why did Vanitas have to be such an ass?! He turned back to Yang and shrugged. "It's getting there" he commented. "Before it wouldn't have mattered if we were friends, he still would have attacked you" he sighed and ran his hands through his hair. "A...while..? We met like six months ago because he was goading me into a fight. Then we just kept meeting, mostly me helping him clean wounds. It's going to sound insane, but I realized I liked him when he helped me do the dishes. After that well.." he shrugged. "I'm not saying you have to understand this, but I am asking you just...leave us be. He's not hurting anyone, and I'm doing fine, just a little tired is all" Tired and jumpy. But he could live with that.

Vanitas shrugged when Moses gave him a dirty look. Yang wasn't wrong when the she said the leaf was turning slowly. Vanitas defended himself with snark. Moses honestly shouldn't have expected much better from him. He fought everything with vicious sarcasm, even when the odds were against him. He wasn't helping anything by being sarcastic but it was a knee-jerk reaction for him, to show he still had some control over a situation that was absolutely out of his hands. Yang had all the power there whether she realized it or not. Moses' happiness and Vanitas' freedom all teetered on her decision of whether or not to turn Vanitas in.

Yang didn't miss the the angry look Moses gave Vanitas. It looked like him turning things around was a slow process. Moses seemed to think that some progress was made, although Yang thought otherwise. Vanitas seemed indifferent to the whole thing honestly. Yang wasn't surprised by that. In her mind, he didn't really care about others or how they felt. Her eyes widened in surprise when Moses said they'd known each other for about six months. And their first meeting hadn't exactly been stellar. Then again, Yang could say the same with her and Adrien. She'd been ready to shoot a fireball at him when she had caught him sneaking into her hideout at night. Luckily, he'd been able to calm her down before anything was set on fire. "Fine? You call this fine?" she asked. "How long do you think you can keep this up? This isn't just about Vanitas's crimes anymore. If a police officer discovers this, both of you will be in trouble." Yang didn't understand why Moses was willing to sacrifice everything for someone who thought so little of others. How could she walk away from someone who had hurt other people, who had hurt her?

Moses paused .He looked at her levelly. "As long as nobody asks questions or anything, I'll be fine. I've lived on the streets, I keep to myself. The only problem throwing a wrench in it is you right now. So the question is this; can you keep my secret or are you going to blab to the cops about my boyfriend? At least, blab before I can go talk to a friend about maybe Van getting off with parole or house arrest, so I can take him home instead of keeping him in this dingy basement like an animal" he hadn't talked about his plans with Vanitas, but he didn't see any reason for the demon to get angry with him; surely Van didn't want to be down here anymore either. He continued shielding Van from Yang protectively, ready to take a fireball to the chest if she got fed up with the conversation and threw one at Vanitas.

"I won't let the idiot take the fall for me," Vanitas said.
Moses might have been an idiot for taking Vanitas in. Vanitas might have been an idiot for staying. That did not mean that Vanitas would allow Moses to suffer any punishments for his wrong doings. If the police did catch him with Moses, Vanitas would say he possessed him and forced Moses' hand or something. Anything to keep Moses out of a cage. A cage that Moses admitted he didn't like keeping him in. That brought another stirring of things he didn't understand. While he might have been outwardly impassive to most of what was going on, minus annoyance, he 'felt' strange.

Yang let out a breath. This was too much, too overwhelming. She didn't know what option to choose. Telling the cops about Vanitas would be the right thing to do. But Moses was a friend of hers. They'd known each other for a long time. He was really the first friend she had made since leaving home. If she turned Vanitas in, he'd never forgive her. "You know what you're asking me to do, right?" she asked, her voice quiet. "You're asking me to walk away from someone who's hurt other people, who's hurt me. He's partially responsible for...for this." She gestured towards what was left of her right arm. "Could you do that, Moses? If someone hurt you, if someone had a hand in the person who screwed over your life, could you just let them go?"

Moses bit his lip and looked down at the ground. "I do. Every day. My dad hurt me and my mom, okay?! But he's still free and he stalks me! But I let him free because it would be too much of an issue to try to bring him in. He's powerful Yang!" Moses took a deep breath and composed himself. "I love Vanitas, and I'm so sorry about your arm, but I am begging you, please please please let this go. Leave Vanitas to me. I'm not going to let him hurt anyone else ,if I can help it"

"She has a point." Vanitas said.
Yang wasn't wrong. He had done all of those things and more. He would probably do them again sometime in the future (well, perhaps not the tormenting someone for fun. That had long since lost it's appeal). Vanitas had hurt people and indirectly led to people being hurt. He would own up to that. Sometimes, it was just for his own amusement, other times it was for survival. Moses seemed so certain that Vanitas would just stop doing that. Stop hurting people simply because the other didn't want him to. If only it were that simple.
"You said you were going to talk to one of your cop buddies," Vanitas compromised. "So do it. Turn me in and we'll see what I get for 'good' behavior. I'm not getting death for breaking out when others did."
He had been out for weeks and hadn't killed anyone. Or maimed anyone. Granted, he also hadn't seen sunlight in those weeks and a few of them he was sleeping in the gutter.

Despite Moses arguing for Yang to let Vanitas go free, Vanitas himself didn't seem to take his side. If anything, he was on Yang's, encouraging her to find a cop and turn him in. Or maybe he was just taunting her to do it, seeing if she could actually make good on her threat. She didn't know. Either way, Moses understood at least a little of what Yang was feeling. She wasn't sure if it was enough though. Vanitas wasn't some powerful demon like Moses's dad. He used to be, but he had been thrown in jail once before. They could do it again. Vanitas didn't seem particularly remorseful about his actions, after all. "Do you ever feel any regret for what you've done?" she asked him. "Even the littlest bit?"

Moses felt attacked on both sides. He was trying to help Van, and Van was siding with Yang. "Van I want to help you. I'll talk to my friends and see if they can help give you a lighter sentence. Yang, don't tell anyone until I find out if that is even possible, please. If it's not, then turn us both in so I can at least be near him"

"That's what I said. Talk to your friends." Vanitas said. "But I meant it when I said you're not taking the fall for me."
A protective flare, even though he didn't realize it. Moses wanted to help, but he was so caught up in his 'love' for Vanitas, it could be self destructive. The only cop that Vanitas knew that Moses knew was Pitch. Black was likely not to feel as... forgiving as Moses was. He would probably end up in handcuffs faster than he had been arrested the first time. He and Pitch weren't on good terms, even if Moses and Pitch were.
He took a deep breath and turned to face Yang. Emotions were a sore point between him and Moses. Moses could readily admit feelings and would talk about them endlessly. Vanitas was more withdrawn. He was trying to figure out if he felt anything. But to demons emotions were like trying to hear underwater. Muted. Dulled. Hard to reach and even harder to figure out. He only had names for the emotions he used often, things that were close to the surface and easier to discern simply by outward appearance. Anger. Hate. Rage. Disgust. Annoyance.
"I don't... do emotions." Vanitas admitted. "I don't feel them as strong as you or Moses do. So if I do feel regret, I don't think I know that it is regret. I know that I should feel it."

Yang gave a sigh. This was getting no where. The conversation was just going in circles because nobody was willing to change her mind. It'd look like she'd have to take one for the team and change her stance, for now. "Fine. Just...fine. I won't blab to anyone about this." She gave a heated glare at Vanitas. "Just so you know though, if I see anything that looks like you're out hurting people again, I'll have the cops at this place in a second." She turned to Moses. "I'm doing this because you've been my friend for a long time and I don't want to hurt you. Just remember that you're asking me to do a lot for you, almost too much. If anything happens that makes me end up regretting this decision, we're done being friends." Just because she was agreeing to do this didn't mean she had to like it. Whether this ended badly or not, this was going to put a serious strain on her and Moses's friendship. In her mind, Moses was almost choosing a criminal he'd fallen in love with over a friend he'd known for years. And if she had to, she'd end their friendship.

Moses bit his lip but nodded at Yang. He didn't want to lose her friendship, but he didn't want to lose Vanitas either. Moses was really going to have to keep a close eye on Vanitas from now on to make sure he really was changing for the better and not regressing into his old ways, for all their sakes. "I'll talk to Pitch about Van, I promise. I'll figure something out. But Yang? Thank you. thank you so much. I'm going to do my best to make sure you don't regret this"

Vanitas chose to keep his mouth shut this time. He wasn't about to go out and start a killing spree, though it would alleviate some boredom. At the same time, disappoint Moses greatly. So he folded his arms across his chest and gave a silent nod. He hated knowing that Yang had absolute power over him like that. That on a whim, she could turn him over to the police. It was even worse that Moses was going to get Pitch involved. He hated how this was turning out but he was better off outside than he was in jail.
