Jane made a face. Okay then, he really had a lot on his mind. She was right in her guess that it was more than just work. Shadow had a very bad week. Or month. She wasn't sure how long this had been going on for him. Certainly not an overnight thing. But it was no wonder the guy had imploded. The work he did, was probably as a distraction from everything. Just like how her father drown himself in music after her mother passed. She motioned over the bartender.
"Get him a double." she said. "And leave the bottle."
The least she could do was cover Shadow's drinks after being rude herself. If anyone needed to get drunk and just forget about how shitty everything could be, it was Shadow. Strange that she even thought that way. This wasn't something she could fix. Alcohol might only make it worse, if she got him so drunk he was hung over the next day. Granted, that could do Shadow some good too. The guy needed to take it easy. Jane wasn't the best at dealing with emotions, but she could at least listen. She did that for Namine.
"I'm... sorry to hear that." she told him honestly.

Leave the bottle. Not too many people said that. Heck, not too people wanted to sit and talk with Shadow about his issues. He didn't like opening up around most people, but between the alcohol and that Jane was slowly becoming someone maybe he could grow to trust, in the same way Yang and Sunshine and Ralph, and, well, Omar, had become, it could get him out of the strange fog he found himself in.
"Thanks," he said. It was both for the honest sympathy and ordering the double.

The bartender brought over a second drink for Shadow and another for Jane. As she requested, the bottle was left on the counter between them, for when they finished their second drinks, they could help themselves for a third. Jane downed the last of her first drink. She wasn't sure what to do in this situation. Shadow seemed frustrated, but pushing him to talk about it didn't seem like the right thing to do. He was already angry and on edge as it was. No need for her to further add to his frustrations.
"I didn't mean to be so pushy." she said.
Perhaps the closest thing to an apology she had ever given to a cop.

Was that...an actual apology? Shadow gave Jane double credit; swallowing that salty oyster called pride was always difficult in the face of someone that fell in the crowd of people you didn't like. The bottle she ordered to add to a double was chilled to perfect, and the chill blasted onto his cheek. He found his voice as that chill got him to sit upright, rattling the ice in his double.
"Apology accepted."

"Yeah, well, you get one," she said, teasing slightly.
Seems that even when she was trying to be subtle in an apology, Shadow still saw through her bullshit. Not many people did put up with her shit. Her dad was an exception. She never really gave Namine or Yang a hard time. Yang helped her meet her dad. Namine was a terrified little wallflower. Then there was Rhona - her student was too sweet to get mad at... So she supposed she blamed her anger and dislike of Shadow on his badge. But that wasn't fair. He was a friend of her father's and not to mention he helped save her in the bayou and she helped him catch a serial killer... It was going to take some getting used to.
"So... going to get plastered with me, officer?" she asked.

Plastered? The last time he ever drank was with Dimitri and Jim. The latter clearly could not hold his liquor, and ended up in the floor and had to be dragged out. Besides, he needed a drink..or ten shots of something strong.
"You're lucky Axel's not here," he snickered. "and considering the shit pile is at Everest levels, I needed this."
Sitting up, he poured some out of the bottle. The amber liquid fell over the ice seductively. Between this and his Black Russian, all the negativity would be cut down. He swigged some of it, saying with confidence
"Never have I ever asked anyone out."

"So let's drink ourselves stupid before he gets back." she replied.
Axel served some of the best drinks, but he had a severe no drunks policy that almost bordered militant. He wouldn't serve already inebriated guests. He would cut you off once he thought you got to your limit. No ifs, no ands, no buts about it. It was honestly a good policy to have. The streets near the bar were safer. Fewer incidents of DUI and bar fights here. Because no one wanted to piss off the bartender that could literally flambé you. It's why Jane liked going there. Still, there were times where she wanted to completely let down her hair. She had no problem doing that on any other occasion but this was much more fun.
"Wait, never have I ever? What are we 21?" she asked. "Okay then..."
She took a shot. She had asked someone out before. They had said no, simply because of social pressures and high society. She hadn't been too heartbroken over it. Turns out the guy wasn't that great after all. And if she really wanted to get technical, she had asked Shadow out to drinks. Or to stay longer and drink with her. Either way, she had asked someone out no matter how you painted it. She gave Shadow a considering look. What was something that would have had to have happened to him? The cop couldn't be that much of a goodie goodie.
"Never have I ever... been kicked out of a bar."

"This beats bitching about crap," Shadow pointed out. Why go to a bar and brood? With good company nonetheless. Jane didn't deserve to be with him grumbling. That seemed to be what they did. At least he could show her he had a lighter side to his personality that he only really popped around Sunshine or Yang or Ralph.
Then Jane threw out that question.
"I'll drink half since I've been threatened but never kicked out," he pointed out. He took half a swig. "Hmm...never have I ever gone past the speed limit." This time he took a full shot.

"You didn't seem like you wanted to talk about it," she pointed out.
He had no reason to confide in her. She had been rude and standoffish since they met. She also didn't want to force Shadow to talk about something he might not have been ready to talk about. There were just some things you handled on your own, without everyone prodding their nose in your business. She took a shot after he said little dare. She did occasionally go past the speed limit. She never got pulled over or ticketed - yet. She licked her lips and poured another shot in preparation of her next little 'confession'.
"Never have I ever lived solely on takeout."

Welp, there went another shot. The trickling, slightly burning taste of the alcohol was in a weird way comforting. Oh, he was bad when it came to takeout. Most of the money he earned went to rent. Online groceries were too expensive. Sunshine would coassionally bring by leftovers, so he sort of scrounged from the Seddons in a way.
"Never have I ever seen a Clint Eastwood film," he confessed.

"Guess that makes two of us." she laughed. "I haven't seen one either."
The alcohol was going to her head. She wasn't drunk yet, but she was happily tipsy. She couldn't actually be enjoying herself with a cop of all people. So yes, she was going to blame it on the drink. She was on her third after all. She was feeling pretty good, with all things considered, warm and tingly or that could just be the buzz of alcohol in her system. She didn't seem to mind too much.
"Never have I ever gone to a sporting event."

Uh oh, sounded like it was beginning to get to Jane. Shadow let that quiet snoozy feeling get to his head before pouring the second shot. This was, well, a bit relaxing. He was the mellow drunk. The kind who would ease the more got into his system.
And he didn't drink at this one. He had gone to several sporting events. Some were undercover, others because of having nothing to do.
"Never have I ever been stung by any sort of insect."

"Well that's just not fair." Jane protested.
She took a drink. She had been stung by bees no less. Danny had been playing on a playground when they were kids and bees had made a home underneath one of the playground slides. Jane heard the rumbling before he did and had scooped him up just as the bees got angry. Her legs had been stung something fierce by the many bees trying to protect their home. Her mother thought they were going to have to take her to the hospital because her legs had been so swollen and painful but that subsided. Eventually.
"Never have I ever been punched." she said.

"Oh, I've got a story about that one. You win this round."
He swigged it, licked his lips, and set the glass down. Well, the game would start to get out of control, and he didn't want to be walking into work too drunk. Sunshine would pester him, and well, that was the last thing he needed to do; worry her.
"Back when he was on the force, I was friends with a Giant. I'm talking the kind who hoard harps and gold and bullshit on top of a beanstalk. He's still around town, but I digress. We were paired up for a training exercise. Ralph punched me so hard I went flying into a wall. I...had pulled a pretty nice three inches off after I came out, too." Rolling himself into a ball had only made it worse, but still, it was the first time someone had managed to actually land a hit.

Jane shrugged. She filled his glass again. They would probably end up drinking the whole bottle between them. Who knew how many more shots that was? But she was pleasantly warm from it. Comfortable and oddly happy. She didn't bother to think too much on it. She was there after all to just get drunk. Shadow might not have agreed with her methods, but he was the one to start the game and she was no quitter. She would drink until there was a winner, but she had a slight fear it wouldn't be her. She was after all partially human.
"Um, ouch? I hope he apologized." she said.
Not many people took a hit like that in such good humor. Though humor and Shadow were not two words she thought she would ever use in a sentence together. Unless it included the words lack of or no sense of.
