The sun was just beginning to set across Bellerouge, the city seeming to glow under the last fiery rays of light that flashed across the waterways. It seemed to bring the life and different cultures of the city into sharp relief yet somehow join them together as well. Already jazz music could be heard playing in some of the bars while magnolia blooms bursting open in the heat filled the air with their fragrance and the very first flashes of fireflies could be seen in the shadows of the bayou. Truly the city seemed perfect in that moment.
Pitch watched all this in silence as he stood beneath the massive branches of a white oak tree at the edge of Raoul Park. And while his eyes took in the beauty of the city before him, his gaze did not linger for very long. He was looking for something... or someone else.
As he watched from his slight vantage point up on a small hill, he saw families preparing to leave the park after a fun afternoon while other people, couples predominantly, strolled together along some of the paths that meandered through gardens and alleys of trees. Not so long ago, he would have scoffed at such human emotions, the blatant show of such affection for another being and the pathetic sentiment of love. Now, however, he only watched in silence and felt the smallest trace of yearning pulsing through his blood.
For a moment, he dropped his gaze from the city and the park down to his hand, where a small black box was tied with a single white ribbon. He only looked at the parcel for a second or two before looking up again while pushing it back into the pocket of his robe. He knew, somehow seemed to sense that he one who the gift was intended for was only a short distance away, that they would find him soon enough.
And with this in mind, the barest of smiles passed across his pale lips.

Meeting Pitch at the park had sounded like a good idea at the time, although Adeline couldn't help but think of the last time they were at this place together. Thrax had pinned her down, Pitch had fought him off, and had nearly died in the process. That wasn't exactly something she could forget in a heartbeat. But, she tried not to let it weigh her down so much. After all, things were looking up. Doing yoga classes with Namine had given her the quality girl time she'd been missing out on ever since Thrax had come into her life. As far as she knew, Cruella wasn't about to bash in her front door. And her parents were pleased with how much time she was spending out of the house. Granted, it was still a bit less than the average person, but her parents were taking what they could get. As long as Adeline wasn't shutting herself up in her room for weeks on end, they were satisfied. Running a hand through her hair, she spotted Pitch under an oak tree not too far away. With the leaves over his head and the sun setting in the background, it almost looked picturesque. She smiled as she headed over. "Hey," she said. "Hope you weren't waiting too long."

It wasn't too long before the figure of Adeline entered the park and, after spotting him, made her way over to where Pitch stood. He waited as she drew closer, making sure the box was concealed within his robe before stepping forward and gracing her with one of his rare smiles.
"Hello Adeline. No, I didn't wait long at all."
The expression on his face, while always cooler then that of a human, had softened and it was clear to those few who knew the Demon well that he was happy.
"I hope you do not find my request to meet here upsetting."
Pitch was well aware that it was at this very park that Thrax nearly killed him and Adeline had saved his life. However, any horrors this might have held for most didn't effect the Demon. No, while the thought of his own demise was unsettling and even somewhat distressing, he did not fear death.

"Oh no, it's fine," Adeline assured him. "I've just been getting some girl time in with Namine. I think she's really starting to come out of her shell and not be so scared by things." Granted, Namine had a good reason for being uneasy in social situations. She'd had a troubled childhood, and had been kidnapped by Vanitas. Neither of those things would bode well for any person. But, she was really starting to bounce back from it. Going to a yoga class with strangers was certainly an indicator of that. Of course, it'd helped that she'd had Adeline with her. Doing anything with strangers was less intimidating if you had a friend by your side.

Pitch nodded. Although he knew Namine only distantly from working at the BPD, it was good to hear that Adeline was spending her time with other people. She might be content to limit her interactions to him and her family, but even a Demon knew humans needed other beings in their lives.
"Would you like to go for a walk?"
He could feel the package weighing down his pocket but knew it would be far better to wait. The gift he wished to bestow to her was something both beautiful and powerful, not something to be given lightly. And therefore it needed to be presented in the perfect situation and circumstance.

Pitch only gave a nod in response, but that wasn't unusual. He wasn't one for meaningless talk. If there wasn't something worth saying, he was quiet. Adeline appreciated that though. She felt like quiet moments between them were just as meaningful as any long conversations they had. Heck, maybe they were even more meaningful, because they knew each other so well that they didn't have to say much to get their point across. When Pitch suggested going for a walk, Adeline smiled. "That sounds great," she said. Walking through the park while the sun set with the man she loved at her side, it didn't get much more perfect than that. She set down the path, her fingers brushing up against Pitch's as she walked.

Pitch glanced sideways when Adeline brushed his hand with her fingers as they walked, his lips pulling up ever so slightly into the faintest trace of a smile. However, he remained silent as they walked along one of the lesser used paths in the park. He might not be trying to conceal their relationship as much as he had before Thrax found out, but that didn't mean the Terror Demon wanted it to be public knowledge. Even now after so many mixed couples forming in the city, most people would be horrified by the idea of a human girl and a Demon being together.
The path before them meandered back and forth through areas that switched from forested to open meadows. Already the sun was starting to disappear behind the horizon, lengthening the shadows around them and turning the sky above into a darker shade of red.
"I take it that your family is doing well. When you last spoke of them, they were still somewhat distressed over the incident in the park..."
Pitch didn't need to elaborate for Adeline to know he was talking about Thrax's attack on the both of them here in this very same area. And although he wasn't aware he had done so, the Demon reached up and lightly touched the patch of skin around his eyes were he had been blinded by the emerald dust.

Adeline didn't mind the silence as she and Pitch walked. It was almost serene. She usually felt calmest when she had Pitch by her side. He understood her best, and she knew he'd protect her in a heartbeat. You couldn't ask for much more than that when it came to love. She glanced up as Pitch's voice trailed off, and his fingers brushed lightly on his face. Adeline tried not to think about the damage the emerald dust had done. She'd never seen anyone in that much pain before, and witnessing someone she cared about as much as Pitch getting hurt like that, it made her feel frightened and angry at the same time. "Yeah, they're fine," she replied after letting out a breath. "I think they were just worried about me...freaking out like that." Of course her parents had been concerned for Pitch, there was no doubt about that. But the way Adeline had reacted had scared them almost as much. Without knowing how she felt about him, her hysterical behavior and her near-refusal to leave the hospital was frightening to them. It was only after Pitch had gotten released from the hospital and Adeline had calmed down that they could finally start relaxing again.

Realizing where his hand was, Pitch slowly lowered it back to his side as they walked along. Despite the unnatural color of the sky here in Bellerouge, it was a beautiful evening. Summer might still be present, but as darkness drew slowly over them one could feel the first faint touches of autumn in the breeze. Soon enough the world around them would fall back into the almost death-like sleep of winter and then before they even knew it spring would bring back the light and life.
It was funny. When he had been a Terror Demon lieutenant following orders and then forsaken his duties to live only for himself, time had held little meaning for him. Now, however, the passage of every season held some new wonder for him. Time had become precious to him in a way it never had before but it had nothing to do with his own immortal life and everything to do with the lives of the mortal things he had come to care for.
As these thoughts passed silently as they walked in companionable silence, he couldn't help but look at Adeline once more. She might be part Demon now and that would lengthen her life by some degree, but she was still mortal....
With an effort, Pitch forced his mind away from this deeply worrying thoughts and continued speaking as if there had been no pause at all.
"You will have to tell them about us soon, Adeline. You cannot keep misleading them."

"I know. I just..." Adeline paused for a moment, trying to figure out how best to explain what she was feeling. "I'm just...scared of how they might react. Like, what if they think I shouldn't see you again or something?" She couldn't help but think of every popular romantic movie where there was a couple with a forbidden romance and someone eventually found out. 99% of the time, the relationship was meant with outrage, and one person was usually forbidden from seeing the other. Romeo and Juliet, Jack and Rose, Christian and Satine, they all tended to end the same way. And Adeline was afraid it might happen to her and Pitch as well. "When we were apart...when you tried to push me away...it was horrible. I couldn't stop thinking about you," she said. "I don't want us breaking apart like that again."

Pitch paused in his tread so that Adeline would have the time she needed to give voice to all of her concerns. They had paused beneath the limbs of an ancient white oak tree and the breeze that blew caused the leaves to rustle as if they stood by running water. The breeze also send strands of Adeline's hair across her face so that it was difficult to tell what her expression was. All of the points she gave were valid and while he might not see her face clearly, he could sense the light flutter of fear that came from her.
"And how do you feel keeping our relationship a secret from them?"
Pitch's words held no accusation in their tone and he spoke softly, but the question was serious enough all the same. He knew that she didn't want to tell her parents for fear they would want to separate them. That was a very real possibility. That he was hundreds of years older then her alone was probably enough for any parent to want to keep they apart but adding in the fact that he was a Demon and he was certain she was right. However, he also knew that lying about it to her parents was hurting her in a different way.

Adeline had a feeling that Pitch knew what kind of answer she was going to give. She just needed to finally voice what she was feeling out loud. "I guess...a little guilty," she replied. Her parents had done their best after Thrax had been summoned, and they'd supported her in any way they could. Not everyone had parents like that. "I just...I know they turn a blind eye to any quirky behaviors of mine, 'cause they just want me to be happy and they don't want me to be as bad as I was after Thrax first got summoned. But, I know there's a line they'll have to draw sometime. And I worry that this might be it." Heck, her parents had even been a little worried at first about Pitch teaching her how to control her demon side. Yhey'd put their worries aside when they saw that Adeline was doing better and was happier. But would they do the same if they found out that their daughter and Pitch were romantically involved? Adeline wasn't sure.

Pitch merely stood with Adeline in silence for a moment as the breeze passed by and then subsided. Suddenly, he reached out a pale hand to stroke her face and lift her gaze so that she was looking at him. And despite the fact that his touch was cold and didn't belong to the race of Mortals, it was exceedingly gentle.
"Adeline, I will not lie to you and tell you your fears are unfounded, but your parents deserve the truth."
As he spoke, he moved his hand so that it was no longer resting on her cheek but moving the lose strands of her raven-black hair out of her face.

Pitch's hand was gentle as he turned Adeline's face towards him, and his words were the same. She knew he was right, she just didn't want to admit it, 'cause that would mean she'd actually have to go through with it and tell her parents what was going on. She couldn't decide what was worse: the guilt over lying to them, or the fear of what their reaction would be. She just knew that losing Pitch hurt, and it was something she never wanted to experience again. "You're right. They do," she agreed. "But...do you ever worry, about what might happen? And not just with my parents. What about...everybody else?" Would anyone at the Others Unit look down on Pitch because of this? That was something she also feared. Keeping their relationship a secret for this long wasn't just to avoid the disapproval of her parents. It was also to avoid getting Pitch into trouble with his job.

"Worry? Of course."
Pitch's response was so quick and clear, it was something of a surprise. The Terror Demon wasn't the type of person to admit to having concerns or restless thoughts, but he hadn't hesitated at all in answering Adeline's question. It showed just how much he truly did care about the young woman that he was so open about something that some would construe as weakness.
"However, I refuse to let worry be the thing by which my life is guided. Some things are simply too precious, too important to miss."
As he spoke, he pushed back the last strand of hair from Adeline's face but didn't move away. It was clear that the very thing he was speaking of missing had been her. He had come close, very close to simply letting her pass by, pushing away his growing human feelings for her until they eventually snuffed out. And yet when she had sought him out, when she had confronted him in anger and hurt, he hadn't been able to push her away. He had made his choice, and that choice had been to love Adeline.
