Adeline blinked. She hadn't expected Pitch to answer that so quickly. There almost always seemed to be a moment of quiet before he spoke, like he was always choosing his words carefully. There was no hesitation in his answer though. He had a point though. Letting worry consume your life wouldn't make it a very good one. That was a lesson Adeline was still learning. Every time Thrax came back into the picture, she had to remind herself not to blame herself, that it wasn't her fault what he did. It didn't always make her guilty feelings go away, but it was still something she tried to think to herself. She couldn't let her guilt consume her, otherwise she'd just end up becoming a recluse again. She gave a little smile as she asked "How do you always manage to say the right thing?" Pitch always seemed to know the right thing to do when she had a problem, or he always had an answer that made her feel better when she had a question.

While Pitch had learned much in his centuries of existence and possessed knowledge of things no mere Mortal could fathom, this was one question he didn't know the answer to. However, he was spared the need to respond when he noticed the length of the shadows behind Adeline. One glance over his shoulder and he saw that the sun had nearly finished setting, only the smallest sliver of the flaming orb present on the horizon.
"Night is nearly here. We're almost late."
He looked down at Adeline after this mysterious response before taking her hand in his and heading down the path once again. However, at one point he turned off the main paved section and followed one of the smaller, less maintained trails. He said nothing as he led the Mortal he had come to love along the trail, easily navigating the more rugged and seldom used path.
After what might have been several minutes or perhaps even an hour, he spotted something glinting through a patch of thick bushes ahead and smiled faintly.
"We're here."
With that said, he carefully pushed the bushes aside and stepped through with Adeline. The source of the flashing turned out to the be the rippling water of a pond as it caught he final rays of sunlight over Bellerouge. To anyone walking passed during the day, it would have appeared to be the same as many of the other ponds that filled the park with nothing special or of note to make it stand out. At night, however....

Pitch was silent at that question. Adeline couldn't tell if he didn't know how to answer, or he was just taking his time in giving one. However, the subject of the conversation changed when he mentioned about being nearly late for something. Adeline raised an eyebrow. "Nearly late for what?" she asked. But Pitch just took her hand and led her down one of the paths that didn't seem to be used nearly as much as some of the main ones. Adeline wasn't sure if she'd been down this way before. She usually remained in the more populated areas of the park, mainly because being near people meant less of a chance of being attacked. It was a habit that she'd developed ever since Thrax had been summoned. She always let her parents know when she was going out, she stayed in areas that had a decent amount of people, and she was back home before it got too late. Pitch announced that they were here, wherever "here" was, but Adeline found out soon enough when Pitch led her through some bushes. She gasped to see that it was a pond that was sparkling as the sunset hit the surface of the water. Everything seemed to be a mix of orange and yellow and blue. "Oh, it's beautiful," she said as she smiled in excitement.

The faint smile grew somewhat larger at Adeline's comment. Yes, she seemed to find the beauty in so much and take pleasure in it. It was one of the reasons he had thought to bring her here to present his gift. However, the thing that truly made this pond so special was only just about to happen.
Stepping up beside her, he pointed to the middle of the pond where a collection of green floating plants stood amongst a collection of lily pads.
"Wait....the real magic is just about to start."
He placed the hand he wasn't using to point on Adeline's shoulder and turned her ever so slightly so that she faced the plants. Then they stood in silence for a moment as the first fireflies began to appear and the last hint of the sun finally disappeared from the sky. Out on the surface of the water, the plants suddenly began to move.
Slowly, almost hesitantly the green leaves began to pull apart. As they did so petals of purest white and lavender could be seen unfolding delicately from the interior of the plant until the pond was covered in a floating carpet of lilies that seemed to glow.
However, Pitch only watched the lilies for a brief moment before looking down at Adeline to see her expression. He had found this pond a long time ago but back then the nighttime spectacle of the lilies blooming had meant nothing to him. Beauty was not something a Terror Demon cared for. However, now that he had someone he cared for, someone he could share this secret beauty with, he had known it to be the perfect place to take the witch he had come to love.

Adeline didn't know how this could get any better. But, the real magic showed once the sun had set. The sky and water were both covered in dark purples, blacks, and blues. However, not all the light was gone. The lilies out on the water suddenly unfurled, their white and lavender colors standing out brightly against the dark background. Fireflies gave the pond a soft glow, with little yellow lights shining against the leaves of the lilies or the dark water. While most people viewed night with a bit of dread, as that was when the scarier monsters came out to play, Adeline felt like there was nothing fearful about this. Night wasn't just about harsh darkness that allowed villains to slip by unseen. It was also soft and calm and quiet. "Pitch, I...I don't even..." Adeline gave a little laugh, finding that she was at a loss for words. "This is beautiful. I've...never seen something like this before."

At Adeline's reaction to the lilies, he felt something akin to a warm bubble growing inside his chest. Sometimes he still found it so strange that his own happiness could be influenced so heavily by the happiness of another. Still, even if it was rather bizarre it was one he was only too glad to embrace.
He glanced at Adeline from where he stood beside her, his hand still lingering ever so lightly on her skin. In that moment, he knew it was the time to present his gift. Pulling back slightly, he reached into the pocket of his robe and pulled out the box.
"Adeline, I have something I wish to give you."
He then took one of her hands in his own and, lifting it up, placed the black and white package into her palms.

Adeline was so distracted by the lilies, she didn't even notice Pitch reach into his pocket and pull out a small box. But her focus returned to him once he spoke to her and took her hand. As always, his skin was a bit cooler than a regular human's, but Adeline had never minded that. Because Pitch felt so different from everybody else she knew, she could pick out his touch easily. And that comforted her immensely. Pitch placed the small box in her hand, and for a moment, Adeline was reminded of all the romantic movies that people seemed to love, where the guy brought the girl to a secluded, pretty place and ended up proposing right then and there. But that thought disappeared almost as soon as it formed. This wasn't a romance movie, and marriage was something Adeline and Pitch had never discussed, mainly because who knew how long this relationship would last. Still, she found it funny that that had been the first thing that had come to mind. "Oh, wow. Thanks." She smiled up at Pitch before opening the box.

Pitch watched in silence as Adeline took the box from him, happiness and excitement sparking in her eyes. However, while his own smile remained on his lips a certain seriousness had settled over the Demon.
Upon opening the box, the inside was revealed to be lined with black velvet. And resting on top of the velvet was a beautiful silver necklace that held a single amethyst on it. The gem was a deep lavender in color, was cut perfectly and rested inside the curve of an intricate crescent moon.

Some might have called the necklace simple. It only had one jewel on it. But Adeline was intrigued by it. The silver was fine, and the amethyst seemed like it shined, despite the darkness all around it. And much like how some precious stones could be used against demons, amethysts were known for helping someone calm down and clear their mind. Amethyst had one or two back home that she usually used for spell work, but she knew this one was different. This was something she could always carry with her, and not just to keep herself calm. It was like always having a piece of Pitch with her. "Oh, it's beautiful," she said, her voice soft as she pulled the necklace out of the box. The chain was cool against her fingers. "Thank you so much," she said before kissing Pitch on the cheek. She felt bad that she didn't have anything to give him, although she wasn't sure what he would even want. Pitch wasn't the type of guy who was into gifts like gift cards or bottles of wine. Maybe she'd just have to get creative.

One would have expected upon seeing Adeline's reaction to the necklace, he would have shown an outward sign of pleasure or even perhaps happiness. However, the serious look never left his face as she exclaimed over the present and kissed him on the cheek. Instead, he reached forward and gently picked up the necklace from where it rested. It hung from his palm like a mystical pendant and he stared at the amethyst set into it for a moment before speaking.
"Adeline, I give you this gift not just to make you happy, but because there is strength within this gem. Amethysts are powerful in strengthening the mind and helping those who have been bewitched to see through the fogs and vapors that cloud their inner thoughts. However, this particular stone has another, stronger power within its depths."
As he spoke, he turned to face the young witch, the amethyst catching the moonlight and seeming to spark with violet power.

Adeline had a feeling that this necklace wouldn't be an ordinary one. Pitch wasn't into plain material things, and neither was she. It would help her in the skill that she'd been working on for months: her mind power. Half the battle with her inner demon side, and Thrax, was all in her head. She had to get a strong mental grip if she wanted to not succumb to any demon-ish tendencies. The necklace would help her with that, and it seemed to flash with power even as it lay in Pitch's hand, catching the moonlight on its surface. However, that wasn't the only power the necklace had. Pitch said it had something else, and Adeline glanced up at him, wondering what it was.

Adeline watched in silence as the fireflies flew around them and the flowers lay freshly bloomed before them. However, a cool breeze seemed to have picked up in that instant as if the very surroundings understood the seriousness of the gift he was bestowing upon her.
"This stone's greatest power is one of augmentation."
At this word, the stone seemed to almost pulse within Pitch's hand. It was as almost as if the stone were sentient and listening to his words, ready to be given and begin its purpose.
"Upon being worn, the stone will absorb and contain power from the one who it belongs to but will not harm the wearer. Rather, it will take in the natural force that radiates from a living being, leaving its owner unaffected but growing in power each day until it is called upon. Then and only then will the energies contained within it flow back into the wearer, increasing their own abilities and powers tenfold."
The Demon continued to look at the stone in his hand as he spoke, but upon pausing he let his golden eyes lock onto Adeline before holding out the necklace once more to her.
"When wielded by the right person, they have the power to overcome even the most dangerous of enemies be they mortal, supernatural, even demonic...."

Adeline took a moment to process the information. No wonder it seemed like the stone was pulsing in Pitch's hand. It was full of energy! If she ever got into a sticky situation again, she could rely on this to help get herself out. She could still remember how Vanitas had worn her down, and she'd only lived because he felt like sparing her. If him, or anyone else dangerous, tried the same thing again, they wouldn't be so lucky. Her fingers gently rested against the necklace and it almost seemed to have a heart beat. It made her think of Pitch's heart beat, and how it comforted her when she was sad or scared. She smiled up at him. "Pitch, this is...amazing," she said, not able to think of a better word for the gift he'd given her. "I'll treasure it always."

Pitch watched Adeline for a moment longer before his solemn look finally gave way and was replaced by a small but gentle smile. Normally he would have never given someone such a powerful artifact but he knew that the young woman before him wasn't the kind to squander or misuse such as gift. No, she would utilize it with caution and respect while still cherishing the gift that he had bestowed upon her.
Without a word, Pitch held out the necklace with its pulsing stone to Adeline. Taking one of her warm hands into his own, he gently wrapped the chain around her palm and let the amethyst come to rest within the palm. He then slowly closed her fingers over the stone before leaning forward and lightly kissing her on the forehead, a bare brush of lips on her creamy skin.

Pitch was quiet, but Adeline could see the smile on his face. He knew she appreciated the gift and wouldn't waste it. Honestly though, she hoped she would never be in a situation bad enough where she'd have to use it. She'd gone through enough with Thrax, she didn't want to face yet another problem like that in the future. But, knowing her, it was probably inevitable. After all, Vanitas was still out there, and he'd probably love to mess with her again if they ever ran into each other. At least if that happened, she wouldn't be so unprepared. The necklace was still in her hands as Pitch leaned forward and gave her a small kiss on the forehead. His lips were cool against her skin, and once he pulled away, she hooked the necklace around her neck. The amethyst rested against her chest naturally, as if it was made to be there. She could still dimly feel the energy pulsing in there. "It's like I get to take a piece of you with me wherever I go," she said, looking up as she smiled at Pitch.
