Pitch was on a typical beat tonight on the streets of Garcon Perdu. However, what should have been another night of keeping his eyes out for any crimes in the worst part of the city wasn't and the reason was simple. This was to be his last night on his own before his partnership with the new Officer Yang would commence. Pitch wasn't the type of being to let things like emotions make him sloppy, but the fact that he was being forced to take on a partner had annoyed him deeply and made him less discreet then he normally would be.
He was standing within the shadows of one of the seedier alleys of Garcon Perdu, his Nightmares out and about looking for any suspicious activity. His normal vigilance, however, had fallen to the wayside as he thought over the ramifications of having Yang as a partner.
It wasn't that he disliked the young woman. He had aided her on several occasions and knew that, despite some very hard hits she had taken in life, she was quite strong and resilient. He also knew that she had done very well in her trainings and wouldn't be much of a burden. And yet he still felt deeply annoyed not by any fault of the young woman but at the Commissioner.
When he had first agreed to work for the BPD, one of his conditions had been that he would work alone. Now that condition had been broken and it angered the Demon.
In fact, he was so distracted by his own thoughts that he didn't even bother hiding himself in the shadows of the alley. After all, most of the criminals in this area knew Pitch by sigh or reputation, so who was going to bother him?

Moses slipped through the shadows of Garcon Perdu. He'd talked this over with Vanitas, who wasn't happy with the plan, and then while the demon was sleeping had slipped out to avoid an argument. He knew Pitch usually walked the streets of the bad area of town in silent vigil. It was just a matter of finding him, or letting a Nightmare find him. Eventually he turned down an alleyway and found the familiar figure, half covered by darkness of the night. But Pitch didn't seem to notice him. This was unusual. Moses coughed gently and stood waiting. "Something on your mind, Pitch?" he asked, a mix of curious and nervous. He rubbed his arm with the latter emotion and sighed. "It's been a little while, hasn't it? I've been really busy otherwise I would have sought you out sooner"

Pitch normally wouldn't have been so careless in letting someone approach him, let alone surprise him. However, his thoughts were such a tangled mess that he allowed a lapse in his vigil just long enough for a shadow to suddenly approach him and speak.
With a start, the Demon returned to his senses and struck out at the unknown shape, the shadows taking on the form of a whip as he prepared to either defense himself or attack whomever had dared to approach him. However, just before the tendrils of inky shadow struck the figure, Pitch recognized the face of the speaker. Immediately he pulled back on the handle and the whip missed by a few inches, striking the brick wall with a sharp crack before falling to the ground motionless like a dead snake.
"Moses..."
Pitch's tone was impossible to read and although he was finding it harder to conceal the emotions that were beginning to grow in him, his face was a perfect blank as he flicked his wrist and the coil on the ground flew back into his hand.

Moses didn't flinch as the whip barely missed him, but his eyes did become black for a moment. If he had to fight Pitch, despite the fact he may lose, he would. When Pitch recognized him however and spoke his name, Moses' eyes returned to normal. He nodded solemnly to the demon and sighed. "Yea, it's me. I wouldn't normally seek you out, but I needed to talk to you. I think it's time I told you...well, everything, actually" He watched the coil of shadow whip fly back into Pitch's hand and rubbed his arms. "You deserve to know, and I just wanted you to maybe help me, if you could"

"My help..."
The words were softly spoken into the relative silence of the alley as the Terror Demon watched the younger demon, his yellow eyes glowing in the darkness. Up until that point he hadn't spoken a word or even moved a muscle as Moses spoke of seeking him out. It had been a long time since he had heard from or seen the half-Demon but he could easily recall how back then he had also claimed he needed help. Back then Pitch hadn't felt much of anything in regards to emotions and yet he had still agreed to aid him. Now however....
"You asked for my help once upon a time and I did what I could for you. Now you want my help again... but for what exactly?"
The question was direct and held a sharp edge to it. He'd tried to help the young man at one point yet what he had offered clearly didn't stick well with him. And despite not knowing the details yet, some instinct told him that Moses was about to ask for something that as a Demon he could overlook but not as an officer of the BPD.

"I'm sorry" It was impulsive but heartfelt and in distress Moses held a hand to his head and tried to hold in his emotions, which threatened to burst him. "I haven't been a good friend, nor did I listen to your warnings or advice. And now I'm in a huge mess and I-I'm following my heart and it's alienating me from all my friends and people I hold dear. I love someone I shouldn't" his voice dropped to a whisper "I love Vanitas. And he's not easy to love but I still keep going. I'm..." he took a deep breath. "I'm hiding Vanitas in my old house I lived in with my mother in the uninhabited part of town. Please, help me. Help me do...something about letting him out. If it's into custody, fine, but I need to know our options and, well, I promised Yang I'd ask you. Because I trust you to be honest with me"

Despite knowing little of the situation, Pitch's intuition had been right. Moses was harboring Vanitas from the police. However, what he said next surprised the Terror Demon in a way that few things had. Moses loved Vanitas.
Pitch blinked slowly at this news and remained perfectly still for a moment or two before suddenly frowning and looking closely at the younger man's face. The look was focused and he kept his gaze fixed firmly for so long it seemed as if he would remain that way forever. However, eventually the frown faded leaving Pitch with a calm expression but a feeling of almost cynical irony. Here was a young man who had come to him in hopes to overcome his Demonic heritage and what ended up happening? He fell in love not only with a Demon but one that next to Thrax was the most wanted in Bellerouge.
"So... my new partner decided to send you to me."
Pitch's tone was soft but a small pulse of annoyance shot through him. This was one of the reasons he hadn't wanted a partner, especially someone as new and fresh to the force as Yang. She might become a great cop with experience, but she was still a rookie and made a big mistake by talking to Moses and then telling Moses to speak to him.

Moses stared wide eyed into Pitch's face, transfixed there like a mouse before an owl. He swallowed nervously. "No. I was the one who suggested to go to you. I...I persuaded her not to go to the other officers about this. I needed some time to think, try and figure this out. And I trust you over anyone else to be honest with me" He took a deep breath, held it, and then released it in a large whoosh. "I just want to be with him but I know that's not going to happen for any length of time. I've been selfish keeping him cooped up in the place, but I just" he laughed a little at himself. "I couldn't help it, I don't want to see him behind bars again. But I want a happy medium where everyone is happy and I know I'm not getting it"

Pitch didn't want to feel anything towards the young Demon in that moment, didn't want to feel any sort of sympathy towards his situation or the possible repercussions that would most likely follow. In that instant, he wanted to be the Terror Demon he had once been and feel nothing. However, that wasn't possible anymore.
He stared coldly at the half-Demon more several more seconds before finally closing his eyes and letting out a sigh. As much as he didn't want to, he felt the smallest trace of sympathy for the young man's situation. Now that he himself had come to know what love was and just how powerful it could be, he could understand why Moses had acted as he did. Love made you do things you would normally never do, as Pitch had learned with Adeline.
"It's more serious then just that, Moses. Vanitas is a wanted fugitive from the law and while what you did you did for love, you broke the law in turn by harboring him."

Moses bit his lip and looked down. "I know" he said in a small and defeated voice. "And I'll take whatever punishment. I just...don't want Vanitas to suffer anymore. He's like a beaten dog, he's growling at anything that comes near him but me. I'm trying to help him but he needs to be able to walk around a free man" Moses looked up at Pitch with a tortured smile. "I'd been seeing him for quite a while before he turned himself in. That's how I could get him to turn himself in. I'm the reason he's being hunted now. I feel so terrible!" he closed his eyes and put a fist over his heart. "Why do I feel so tortured? over someone like Vanitas? I shouldn't want to give my life up for someone like him, but I do. I would do about anything to keep him safe"

Pitch watched the young man struggling so desperately before him, and he couldn't help but see just how ironic it was. Here was Moses trying to tell him, trying to make sense of why he cared for Vanitas even though it flew in the face of logic. And here Pitch stood, understanding in a way that Moses couldn't even begin to guess at because he had asked himself similar questions when it came to his feelings for Adeline. True, she wasn't a dangerous criminal like Vanitas but she had still somehow managed to make him act against his own reasoning and logic.
"Love often doesn't make sense and many times it seems to fly in the face of reason and logic, but that doesn't alter the hold it has over us... or change the way we feel."
Pitch looked down at his own hand for a moment, looking into the pale palm before slowly closing it into a fist. Love. It wasn't something a Demon was meant to understand and yet here they stood, both of them demonic by some degree and both of them contemplating and struggling with the fact.

"No, no I guess not" Moses sighed and ran his hands through his hair. "I want to do something, anything, to keep him safe. Even if it's turning myself in and making a barter or...or giving the police a reason to hate me as much as him, so we can be in the prison together. He's going to outlive me by...I dunno, centuries? But I want so much to be with him and it's wrong and even he admits this shouldn't be, but here we are. I can't abandon him and he...I honestly think somehow he feels the same way too" Vanitas swore at him, degraded him, but there were the moments of gentleness. The almost peaceful look as he slept, and how he clung to Moses that once made Moses anxious to believe that maybe, just maybe in his stunted and blackened heart, Vanitas felt the same way. "What am I going to do Pitch? Is there any hope?"

Hope for a Demon? Now there was a question that would have made him laugh cruelly not so long ago. Demons weren't humans, they couldn't change as other beings did nor did they want to. At least that was what he had believed for so long and yet he knew it couldn't be true, not when he himself had changed so much...
"I can't tell you how to feel, Moses. However, I can tell you that the options before you are limited and that if Vanitas tries to fight again, if he even resists, then he'll most likely die."
He frowned as he said the words but Moses needed to know the extent of just how far all of this could go. The feelings towards Demons were at an all-time low and many humans just wanted to see the entire race destroyed. After what Thrax had done, people had been scared but upon learning that even a Demon as powerful as him could be killed, the fear had slowly turned into a burning hatred. And with the Crimson Demon dead, they were looking for a new target to set their sights on...
"The tension towards Demons right now in Bellerouge is mounting and people want to lash out at anyone who gives them an excuse. If Vanitas were to claim he'd come into custody without a fight only to pull a stunt like he did with Namine...."
He didn't bother finishing the thought. There wasn't really any need to and Moses was no fool. What's more, because he had associated so much with the wanted Demon he could get hurt himself.

Moses nodded quietly. "The best course of action is either become part of the force together and gain that protection, and possibly teach him that doing the right thing is a very effective way of gaining respect or...or joining dad and becoming feared enough people leave us alone" his face crumpled at the thought. Because of Vanitas he'd sunk so low, but that would be the point of utter despair for him. And yet he couldn't give up on the other demon nor could he give up on his first love. "If he tries to do what he did to Namine again, I'll kill him myself" Moses promised quietly. "To spare us both the pain of being killed by an angry mob" Moses looked up, dark eyes worried. "What about you? Are you going to be okay? It has to be hard being a cop and a demon in this city with how everyone feels. I'm ok because I'm half human and look it most of the time, but you...you don't look human hardly at all. Is everything alright?"

Pitch watched the despair creep across Moses' face as he spoke and while the half-Demon was filling with sorrow at the idea of becoming like his father, he knew it wouldn't reach that point. Moses had already proven that he wasn't anything like his demonic parent by loving another being and sacrificing so much for them. However, it was clear that very difficult times lay in his future.
He might have said something then and there if Moses hadn't suddenly changed the topic, asking if he was alright during this time of unrest in the city when most people's anger was directed towards Demons. In this way he was also the exact opposite of his father, having expressed concern for others and their own wellbeing.
"The opinion of fools only have weight if you allow them to."
His tone was perfectly calm and held the slightest trace of scorn. While he might have gradually developed human feelings beyond anything he had imagined since coming to Bellerouge, he was not about to let public opinion have any control over said emotions.
"But back to your issue. If you truly wish to help Vanitas you just speak with him. He cannot escape his punishment less he continue to run his entire life but neither does his life have to come to an end. Help him understand that to truly reform, he must take account of the things he has done."
