Pitch didn't respond, verbally at least. But he seemed to know where this thief was hiding. He moved as quietly as a shadow, which Yang had to admire. She'd never be able to sneak around like that. But, she did the best she could, moving slowly while keeping her fists raised. Her head craned around the store, and it looked like nothing had been moved. Unless the thief put everything back the way he found it, which Yang doubted, he hadn't touched this stuff. He was after something else, which was confirmed by a loud clicking sound. Yang had only heard a sound like that a few times in her life, but she knew what that meant: there was a safe back here, and it was open. "Shit," she muttered, moving faster. Going slowly didn't seem like the best option anymore, not when it meant that the thief might take all the money and run off before they could get there.

Pitch heard the loud click that echoed from the back of the store and felt his shadows moving about him, eager to strike forth and capture the thief. However, they had no idea what they might face with this Calavera Thief. It was clear from everything they had already observed this evening that indeed he was Other as had been guessed and that he possessed powerful spells, yet the greatest danger he posed to them was the simple fact that they didn't know the full extent of his abilities. Therefore, Pitch knew the best approach would be to locate the criminal without making him aware of their presence and apprehend him before he could mount a defense. That meant moving slowly, silently and with care.
However, Yang clearly had other plans. As soon as the click of a safe faded, she let out a small curse before suddenly running forward without trying to remain quiet or stay concealed.
"Yang, no!"
Pitch's words were a severe whisper but it did no good. Yang was already running towards the back of the store, making enough noise to alert the thief if he was paying any attention. Gritting his teeth in frustration, the Terror Demon followed in the wake of the young and fiery woman.
_____
Manolo had just finished putting a third of the cash in the safe into his bag when his whole body suddenly tensed. A moment later he heard the sound of light footsteps running towards where he stood in front of the open safe.
Damn!
He had no time for any other thoughts before he had leapt to his feet and reached towards the belt he wore over his black clothes, the flames in his eye sockets flaring up as he realized other people were in the store for him. However, he was far from unprepared for this possibility. Along the length of his belt were small loops and in each loop was a pouch containing an assortment of powders and spells he had prepared for his nighttime excursions.
Without having to think about it, he plucked a specific spell from the lines of sacks while simultaneously picking up his half-filled bag of money and slinging it over his shoulder. It was only a moment later when he saw two figures approaching where he stood. Even at a distance he saw a flash of light reflect from the badges the leading figure wore and he felt a surge of anger and anticipation. It was the police.

Pitch's whisper fell on deaf ears. This was Yang's first case, she couldn't let the thief escape. By the time she found him, he had the bag of money slung over his shoulder and seemed practically ready to make his exit. She considered it an accomplishment that they'd managed to get to him before he left. However, she hadn't expected the guy to be a skeleton come to life. It was a bit alarming, for about a second. But Yang had seen creepier things. Her hands became covered in flames and she held them up, ready to strike. "Freeze, Bone Boy," she said. "Or we're going to see if flames can hurt a skeleton as much as a person." Granted, bones couldn't catch fire, but Yang figured a fireball would at least sting the guy a little. Or just alarm him long enough for her and Pitch to nab him.

Manolo was ready to take off as soon as he saw the two figures rapidly approaching him. Although he wasn't averse to direct confrontations with the scum that called themselves the police, he knew it was easier to make an escape then stand and fight. He stood on the tips of his feet, his muscles tensed as he prepared to dart into the store and use the multitude of hiding places to avoid the two figures. However, before he could take off into the semi-darkness with his stolen load, he saw a flash of blonde hair and a fiery but pretty face from the leading officer.
Suddenly his skeletal body froze in place and his mind ground to a shocked halt. Although he had only met her once not so long ago, Manolo recognized the young woman standing only a few yards away with her hands on fire. It was Yang.
Mierda, mierda, mierda! This is bad! She's a frickin' cop? Does she recognize me through the glamor?
The thoughts circled frantically around his head as he stared across the space to Yang, trying to get over his initial shock and move. Honestly, he wasn't sure if he would have even been able to move if the second officer, a tale pale guy with yellow eyes and wearing nothing but black, hadn't suddenly moved up beside Yang and stared to speak in a calm but cold voice.
____
Pitch moved up next to Yang immediately, feeling a ripple of annoyance that the young woman had taken off like that without thinking first or trying to use a stealthier approached. Not only that but she had approached the target without knowing how dangerous he might be. Either way, the thief stood only a dozen feet away with a bag of stolen bills in hand. And it looked as if the rumors had been true. The thief appeared to be nothing more then a skeleton, but the Demon was fairly certain this was a disguise and nothing more. All the same, he brought his hands upward as black sand took shape into a bow with an arrow cocked at the 'Calavera Thief.' The fleshless figure before them didn't move or say anything, so Pitch spoke instead after shooting a warning look at Yang.
"Do not move. By order of the Bellerouge Police Department, you are under arrest for breaking and entering, burglary and..."
Without warning, the skeleton before them threw something he had been concealing in his hands at them. Pitch immediately jumped backwards as the object, a glass vial containing some kind of reddish liquid, hit the ground and shattered with a miniscule tinkle of glass. As soon as the vial broke, a huge cloud of red rushed upwards and filled the space, spreading rapidly and filling the air with its cloying scent while simultaneously obscuring the shape of their target.
By instinct Pitch shot his black arrow but knew as it disappeared into the red cloud that he had missed his target and they had a bigger problem on their hands. For a soon as he took in a single breath, the Others officer could feel his head suddenly growing light and dizzy. Whatever was in the reddish cloud was designed not only to create a smoke screen but to also knock out anyone who inhaled the substance for too long.
"Yang, cover your mouth now!"
Even as he spoke, Pitch pulled the collar of his robe up so that it covered his mouth and nose. If the cloud was effecting a Demon like himself so quickly then it would most likely be hitting Yang twice as hard.

Yang blinked. The thief almost seemed...shocked, to see her. Granted, that wasn't too surprising. He was a criminal and she was a cop who'd caught him with his hand in the cookie jar. But it was almost like he knew her. Had they met somewhere before? Yang couldn't recall meeting any kind of skeleton man in the last couple of years. However, before she could think of anything to say, Pitch arrived, the black arrow he conjured a start contrast to the glittering fire in her hands. He seemed annoyed, although Yang couldn't see why. They were both good fighters, and they had this guy outnumbered. This would be easy. However, Yang would find out just how greatly she'd underestimated the thief when he suddenly threw a vial onto the ground. Red smoke burst out of it and she let loose a fireball, not sure if it hit its mark or not. She coughed as she tried to peer through the smoke. Where was the thief? It wasn't until Pitch yelled out his warning that Yang noticed the weak feeling in her knees and the way the room started to tilt. "Shit," she muttered as she stumbled backwards, pulling her shirt over her mouth and nose. The smoke's effects hit her hard though, and her legs started to give out. She clutched onto a display case to support herself, fighting to stay awake. She wouldn't be beaten by something as trivial as a sleeping potion.

Manolo didn't wait but moved as soon as the red cloud rushed upwards and engulfed all of them in it's crimson mist. It was a good thing too as both a black arrow and golden flames shot directly through the space he had occupied only a split second before. Crouching close to the ground, he began to move as quickly and silently as he could away from where the two officers had stood, only too aware that the cloud would last less then a minute.
However, even as he tried to escape he couldn't help but berate himself for freezing up so suddenly upon recognizing Yang. He'd met her once on the street and joked around with her, so what? That had been no reason to have been so surprised by the fact or let it make him such an easy target. And now he knew she was an officer he could feel the low-level anger that was almost always with him spike. While his emotions were horribly tangled up when it came to Yang and the realization she was a cop, another part of him wished for nothing more then to strike out at the officers. And yet he was no fool and knew that now that he had been compromised, he had to get away.
Staying low and darting through the red cloud, he managed to make his way towards the window he had broken in. However, before he could reach it and the promise of freedom it held, several dark figures that could been seen even through the obscuring cloud appeared and began to move about. It was clear that while they weren't human, they were conscious beings as they began to move in a tightening circle around the perimeter of his smoke screen. And where before the broken window had stood open and free, now another of the shadowy figures appeared and blocked the way, looking for all the world like a horse.
Manolo was trapped. However, despite his heart racing in his chest he wasn't out of tricks just yet.
____
Pitch coughed but managed to stay on his feet as the red cloud swirled around them, making it impossible at the moment to tell where their target had gone. However, despite the sudden setback the Demon knew the man couldn't escape. As soon as the smoke screen had appeared, he had called out to his Nightmares. Even now, several of them were moving through the cloud unaffected, searching for the thief, while another stood guard at the broken window to ensure he couldn't escape.
However, it was clear that the smoke was taking a big toll on his partner. Despite the cloying red smoke, he could see her a few feet away, clinging weakly to a case so that she didn't fall over. Pitch immediately stepped up beside her and grabbed her by the shoulder, trying to keep her steady on her shaking knees.
"Yang, are you alright? Can you still move?"
Clearly she had inhaled too much smoke and was suffering from its effects. However, as he looked at the young woman he realized he could see her more clearly and that the red haze around them was already starting to dissipate. Whatever it was, it clearly worked for only a short amount of time but there was no way to tell how long the knock out aspect of the smoke would last. Should he get Yang out to ensure her safety or pursue the target?

Yang wasn't sure if Pitch was toughing through this red smoke better than she was, or if it just didn't work as well on demons. Either way, her partner had enough strength to help her stay steady on her feet. She blinked several times. Where was the thief? Had he escaped? It was hard to see, and feeling so tired wasn't helping. It was only thanks to her stubbornness that she'd even managed to stay awake this long. Pitch asked her if she was okay, and she noticed the smoke slowly receding. It looked like it didn't last very long, although Yang wasn't sure if the exhaustion she was feeling would go away as quickly. She had to stay put, at least for the moment, and focus on getting her strength back. "I'm fine," she replied. Her words came out slowly, but she managed to stand up a little straighter. "Go get him. Don't...don't let him get away." She could already see the dark shapes of Nightmares coming to their aid, and while they were pretty fearsome on their own, she knew that it was when they worked in tandem with Pitch that their real power showed. She'd provide some backup if the thief tried any other tricks.

Manolo cursed under is breath as the smoke continued to disperse, the last of his cover quickly dwindling away. Even as he crouched low to the ground he could see the black horse-like shapes that were galloping around the store in search of him, their yellow eyes searching tirelessly for him. Reaching along his belt, he pulled out a knife but knew that it wouldn't be much use against these creatures. As he tried to come up with a strategy for escape, he recalled hearing in a news report about a Demon BPD detective who could control things called Nightmares. It looked as though the pale guy working with Yang was that very Demon.
Moving low still, trying to utilize what little smoke remained, he moved towards the window and the Nightmare. And while the passing thought had seemed useless, another memory surfaced to the young thief. While he didn't know much about Nightmares or the Demons that could control them, he recalled learning at some point that they couldn't tolerate intense light. And that gave him an idea.
Hiding behind a rack of suits and a several yards away from his opening to freedom, Manolo stopped and pulled out several of the vials hanging from his belt. As quickly and quietly as possible he began to mix the powders and liquids in each. What he had planned was a risky gamble but it might be his only way out. And despite the danger that surrounded him in that instant, he couldn't help but feel a rush of adrenaline that made him feel truly alive.
With a deft skill, he added each spell to a single vial. Once the mixture was complete, he gave it a firm shake and immediately the vial began to glow. However, before he could do anything else a piercing neigh filled the air and a large shadow fell across him. He was only just in time rolling away as a twin set of black hooves slammed into the space he had just occupied, causing the highly polish wooden floor to shatter.
Rising lightly to his feet, Manolo saw the Nightmare snort and move towards him, its companions quickly coming forward to form a circle around him that was impossible to escape or so it seemed. Turning slowly the vial hidden in his palm, he saw Yang and the Demon slowly approaching where he was cornered. He knew that if he were to make his escape, the time had finally come to play his trump card.
______
Pitch could clearly see that Yang was not ok. However, he wasn't about to get into an argument with the young and fiery rookie, especially when their target was in the building and could still be apprehended. This thought had barely formed when the Demon heard the neigh of one of his horses, indicating they had found and cornered the criminal.
"My Nightmares have him circled. We have to move now."
Despite his own somewhat unsteady state, he took Yang's arm and slung it over his shoulder to ensure she was stable before moving forward between the racks of designer clothes. Soon enough they found the Nightmares standing in a rough circle around the Calavera Thief. The skeleton-faced man was turning slowly on the spot and looked stricken, perhaps realizing that despite his trick with the red smoke he hadn't been able to get away.
Still helping to support Yang, Pitch moved until they stood just behind his leading Nightmare and stared at the man with cold golden eyes.
"Enough. You're surrounded. Your little trick with the smoke has failed. Continue to resist and we will be forced to use whatever mean necessary to apprehend you."

Yang glanced up at the same time Pitch did. She'd heard the neighing of the Nightmares as well. It sounded like they were doing okay. Pitch confirmed as much, saying they had the guy cornered. That made Yang feel satisfied, even if she needed some help getting out the front door. She hadn't intended to be dead weight during this mission. She'd find a way to make up for it, if not now, then later. She and Pitch came upon the thief, who was surrounded by several Nightmares. Yang knew first-hand what it was like to be cornered by the creatures, but she felt no sympathy for the man right now. Her pride was still wounded for how easily she'd been duped before. The night air did her some good though, and it cleared away some of the effects of the red smoke. She managed to stand on her own and got into a fighting stance. "My first fireball might have missed you, but don't count on it happening again," she said, hoping she sounded intimidating.

Manolo's glowoing eyes darted from Nightmare to Nightmare as he tried to wait for the best moment to use his last trick. He had used all of his potions to make this one and if he failed, there would be no escaping the cops.
Speaking of, Yang and the Demon approached where he was trapped. It was clear they were still reeling somewhat from the smoke but not nearly as much as he hoped. Keeping his fists clenched even as the vial began to grow warmer in his palm, he turned to face the pair with a look of defiance on his fleshless face.
"Try me, pinche Hura." _________
Despite how bad things looked for the thief, he didn't appear frightened or even that nervous. In fact, the man looked almost eager for the excuse to fight.
Pitch frowned at the skeleton. If he was gunning for a fight with them it meant he was probably willing to use whatever means he had to inflict damage.
However, as Yang spoke heatedly he noticed the man's flaming eyes flickered towards her with just the smallest hint of worry... and recognition.
Pitch's glower deepened as he went from supporting her to merely keeping her steady. He then spoke in a low voice as an idea came to him.
"Yang, listen to the thief's voice. Does it sound familiar to you?"
As he spoke, his Nightmares began the final advance on the criminal. They were 15 feet away, now 10, now 8.

Yang just glowered at the skeleton man. If he wanted a fight, she was going to give him one. It was what she was good at. But at Pitch's comment, she gave him a second look. So it wasn't just her. Pitch could see that this guy spoke to her as if they'd met before. But she was pretty sure she'd never met someone like this before. Demons, witches, fairies, she'd seen a lot of different Others in this city, but never any skeletons. But the more she thought about the man's voice, the more it reminded her of someone's. Manolo came to mind, but Yang wasn't sure if this guy was really him. As far as she knew, Manolo couldn't turn into a skeleton. Or could he? They hadn't brought the subject up when they'd met. He hadn't said anything about being a thief. Then again, what kind of thief would openly tell that to someone, especially a stranger? "I...I don't know," she said, feeling like her mind was going in circles.

Manolo was biding his time, waiting for the one chance he would have to make this work. The Nightmares were almost upon him now, snorting fiercely and tossing their ink-black manes and in the palm of his hand he could feel the vial heating to the point where it burned. Now was the time to act, now was the time to play his last and best bet for escape. However, before he could do so the Demon spoke to Yang and asked if his voice sounded familiar to her. Yang's own expression turned to one of confusion and just a hint of recognition....
Crap! Had she recognized him just from hearing him speak? They had only met once, for crying out loud, and yet she seemed to be struggling to place where she had heard his voice before. It was enough to make the thief freeze for the barest of moments in panic as the shadowy horses drew upon him. However, before his own panic could undo him and the Nightmares capture him, the vial in his hand grew so hot that it began to burn his own flesh, smoking lightly in the process. A moment later he felt the vial start to crack even as the pain roused him from his frozen state. Without waiting another instant, he threw the glass to the ground as the Nightmares reached him.
The vial hit the ground and shattered and from its remains blasted forth yellow light almost as bright and intense as the sun itself. Manolo had taken a gamble using up all his potions on this one big spell, but he had noticed the shadowy quality of the Demon and his Nightmares and guessed that neither could withstand a sudden burst of piercing golden light. And even Yang would be temporarily blinded by the light.
As the intense rays filled the entire store, the young thief heard several shrieks from the Nightmares that were rapidly cut off. He had closed his eyes before the vial broke so that he wouldn't be blinded and even now he kept his lids closed as the powerful energy lit the place up. However, he knew where his goal lay and even though his hand smarted somewhat, he immediately ran towards the broken window and freedom, navigating purely on all his other senses. When his way wasn't blocked he put on an extra burst of speed aided by a shot of adrenaline and the excitement of escape.
He was going to escape from right under the arrogant cops' noses! Nothing was in his way now!
_____
Pitch's eyes had been looking between the thief and Yang, watching each closely and feeling that the rookie cop was close to figuring out just who the infamous "Calavera Thief" was. However, as his gaze turned once more to the skeleton man and his Nightmares closed in on him, he saw the figure throw another vial on the ground. Expecting more smoke, the Terror Demon was left completely unprepared when what issued forth from the vial wasn't red fog but brilliant golden light!
"Ah!"
Pitch flung an arm up to cover his face but it was too little too late. The light had struck him in the eyes and he could feel the echoing screams of his Nightmares in his mind as the intense light pierced their shadowy bodies, disintegrating them in an instant. Even Pitch could feel the heat and light of the attack weakening him, especially his eyes. The emerald poisoning had left them far more sensitive even after they had healed. He might have turned his powers and intentions towards good, but he was still a Terror Demon and the light was a powerful blow against him.
However, even as he felt his own powers dwindling and his eyes were blinded to their surroundings and the quarry they sought, Pitch kept his mind. He might have been hit hard but Yang was with him and she was part Phoenix.
"Yang! Stop him now!"

Just when Yang felt like she was about to explode from all the confusion she felt, the thief threw down another vial. Instead of smoke, this one gave a flash of light. Yang shielded her eyes and managed to avoid getting too blinded. It seemed like Pitch wasn't so lucky though. The smoke may not have done much against him, but the light was a different story. It had a greater effect on him, but at least he was still able to give an order. Yang managed to see the thief scrambling to get away right as Pitch shouted, and Yang gritted her teeth. She wasn't going to leave anymore of her attacks up to chance. She let out a blast of fire behind her, rocketing herself forward like a bullet as she let loose another fireball in the thief's direction. If all went as planned, the fireball would hurt him just enough to distract him so she could tackle him to the ground.

Manolo was only a few feet away from the window and his escape when he heard the unmistakable sound of fire roaring behind him. Glancing backwards, he instantly saw Yang propelling forward at a rapid speed on a burst of flames, coming towards him as she simultaneously threw a fireball right at him. Even though it was only a space of seconds, in his mind time seemed to slow. He knew that the fireball was meant to distract him so that she could slam him to the ground before he could mount a defense. He knew that if he tried to dodge the flaming sphere he would be tackled by the young woman. With his chance for escape gone, he would be taking into custody and once his glamor wore off, they would know just who he was. With all this crossing his mind in an instant, he made a split-second decision.
Suddenly he turned to face Yang's onslaught, coming to a complete stop so quickly that it would throw almost anyone off in the abrupt switch from flight to fight. The flames in his eye sockets appeared to flare and he didn't even try to avoid Yang's attack, instead putting up his left arm in front of his chest and face. The flames struck, hitting him along the forearm and upper arm. Manolo gritted his teeth against the pain as the skin beneath the glamor burned but he didn't lose his focus, instead allowing the pain to energize him as he made his move.
Stepping forward as he dropped his smarting arm, he met Yang slightly to the side while bringing his uninjured arm forward at a hooked angle. Grimacing, he allowed his arm to catch her around her middle and let the momentum of Yang's attack turn both him and her. A moment later, he released his hold on her even as her propulsion still carried her forward and directly into the displays that lined the wall to the left of the broken window. Somehow, he had managed to turn her own attack against her.
Not waiting to see if Yang would stay down after hitting the displays and the wall behind them at such high speed, Manolo immediately dashed to the window and hurled out of it. He hit the cobbled street outside rolling, coming up couching low to the ground. Wincing at the pain that coursed through his burned arm, he clenched his hand over the wounds before rising to his feet and taking off into the misty darkness. In only a few moments, the figure of the skeleton man had been swallowed up by the Louisiana night.
______
Pitch heard everything as it happened but was unable to do anything to assist his partner. The blindingly strong light had left him unbalanced and despite trying to collect his Nightmares together he was unable to do so with any great speed. Even his eyes were slow to recover as he blinked them rapidly, the white slowly receding but leaving annoying orbs to float around in the path of his vision.
Before his nearly fatal encounter with Thrax, he might have still tried to take down the Calavera Thief with partially blinded eyes. However, he had learned a hard lesson from that experience and didn't move forward, instead using his other senses to try and determine what was happening.
When he heard Yang yell and the roar of flames, when he heard the thief let out a hiss of pain, he thought for a moment that she had managed to apprehend him. However, when these sounds were followed up with a resounding crash of something hitting a hard surface and the clatter of multiple things falling over, he knew it wasn't the case.
"Officer Yang, are you alright?"

The thief got singed alright, but Yang's attack didn't turn out quite as she had planned. Her momentum was used against her and she was sent flying into a fancy, and probably expensive, display. The impact wasn't hard enough to make her black out, although she felt like she was seeing stars when she opened her eyes. She shook her head to clear it, and saw that the thief was gone. She gritted her teeth. How could this guy had managed to outwit both her and Pitch? Getting him should have been a cinch. But, that had been the fatal flaw for both of them. This guy was smart, and being outnumbered two to one hadn't fazed him in the slightest. Yang wouldn't underestimate him again. She heard Pitch call out for her and she finally sat up, the stars in her eyes fading away. "I'm fine," she said as she stood up. She'd probably have a few bruises from this, but at least nothing was broken and her metal arm was still in good shape. However, the room was still fairly bright from the thief's last attack, and while it didn't bother Yang so much, it was probably still bad for Pitch. "He's gone," she said, although Pitch probably already knew that. "We should get outside, where it's darker."
