Exhausted and beaten down from the exceedingly long week Aqua made her way home. Mardi Gras was over. Valentine's Day had passed. Then after that it was the Chinese New Year. Following all of that there was Saint Patrick's day. A number of big drinking holidays which meant more drunken disorderly arrests. At that point, Riku could handle them like a pro. Either way, she had felt like all she had done was run from one crime scene to the next. Drunks down in Magnolia Street. The usual people fighting over the stupid Mardi Gras beads. One guy tried to get her to 'join in' and was slapped with silver bracelets while Riku fought to stop laughing at her. Then with Valentine's Day there were calls left and right about so-and-so cheating or someone getting drunk or violent or worse killing each other in a passionate jealous rage. Chinese New Year was calmer, but then with Saint Patricks' day it was almost as bad as Mardi Gras all over again.
She had gotten as far as to put her gun away, take off her shoes and cap before making her way to the couch. Her blue officer button up was unbuttoned with her tank top underneath. Hair slightly frazzled considering how much she had been going non-stop. She gave a groan when she realized, she still had to eat at some point. Luckily, Riku had negotiated them time off, probably so he could spend time with Sunshine. She could finally catch up on her rest. She could get a second wind for the rest of the week. But meals nearly forgotten as her head started to bob sleepily.

"Aqua? Are you home?"
The knock outside was followed by the unexpected voice of someone that had barely started coming out of his hidey hole. The end of the world was coming now that the gate was finally set up. Shadow knew what he had to do, but before he could even go do his fufilled task, he had to make up for lost time. Time spent where he had turned his back on so many officers. Riku and Sunshine were moving with the help of the Colts. After taking Jane home from her vent session, he realized there was only one other person he could talk to. He and Aqua had only spent "quality time" when delivering things to homeless in Garcon Perdu. He felt safer in Riverfront.

Aqua wearily got to her feet. At least she hadn't changed out of her uniform yet. It might have been embarrassing to answer the door with her yummy sushi pajamas and fluffy slippers. Not at all the cop that had seen some things on the street. Who could be visiting at this hour? Everyone she knew was supposed to be working, right? She wasn't sure. The shift had been long and hard. Leaving her more than a little frazzled. But she walked over to the door, opening it up to see whoever was calling on her that night.
"Shadow?" she inquired. "What are you doing here?"

“I was in the neighborhood. Thought I’d stop by and say hello, catch up.”
It was so unlike him to be saying these things. Him, the cop notorious for going alone and abandoning missions. But he was saying them right out loud and true. His new ‘ring’ hung near his holster, but the bad news was he had no clothes to show her in person how he looked. But he did have a recent picture where he and a Sunshine went to the Bourbon for drinks to celebrate saving a jumper.

"Come in!" Aqua said.
She was surprised that Shadow was stopping by. They hadn't ever been particularly close, but she didn't want him to feel unwanted. When she thought of him, she normally just associated him with Sunshine or Yang. Aqua wasn't high on his friend list. Still, she was curious as to why he was visiting. The only way to figure out why was to let him in. Not only that but it would be rude to turn him away.

Shadow turned the knob. Her apartment was far nicer than the door he had at Frog Prince that was super wiggly under his grip every time. Hers was nice and firm and held in place. He opened and took in how, well, neat the place was. He wasn't used to entering a bachelorette's...well, former, bachelorette pad...and he shifted nervously.
"Did I...catch you at a bad time?"

"Not really. Just got off shift." she told him.
She looked him over. He seemed on edge about something. So to make things a little less tense, she stepped back, away from the door, letting him closet it behind him. She moved to the couch, sitting back down and making herself comfortable. If he saw that she was at ease, maybe it would help with his tension too. Shadow was a bit of a mystery, at least to her, she didn't know him well and therefore couldn't read him well. Whereas she was getting close to Riku and could tell when he was happy or sad, or cross with her.
"Is... everything okay?" she asked gently. "I don't normally get house calls from you."

"So did I," he chuckled.
Even if he was laughing, the noise was a touch hollow. He was awful because part of Aqua's persona; life have been ruined because of him. While Terra's murder was solved, the impact it no doubt had wasn't fun. But he wasn't here to mope about the past. He was here to be friendly, less of the enigmatic cop he was coming off as. Pitch already had that thing covered, and he did not want to follow in the footsteps of the demon. Or any demon, despite being half that himself. She asked if he was all right, and he sighed.
"Not really."

"Do you want to talk about it?" she asked.
There had to be a reason that Shadow came to her of all the people in the office. He normally spoke to Sunshine or Yang about these matters. They were his more trusted friends, not her. But she supposed it made sense, if he couldn't talk to them, he would go to someone who at least tried to be a neutral third party. She could be a sympathetic ear if he needed one and a shoulder to cry on should it come to it. She tried to be as open minded as she could, despite all the things she learned about her culture and her people.

He would save the big kicker for last. The real reason he was here was because he knew he would never see her, or any of his other friends like Sunshine and Yang, ever again. He would protect them. Besides, he wanted to talk with the faery as a person, not a colleague. Sure, they made mutual respect helping the poor in Garcon Perdu and worked well on joint missions, but that wasn't the same as sitting down over a cup of coffee at Nevermore or, well, sitting in a person's house.
Shadow sighed, "Not even sure where I begin."

"How about wherever is most comfortable?" She offered.
She had been in this situation before. When Namine was having really bad days. She had fewer and fewer of those now. Adrien, Jane and Omar had all pushed her back to her feet, encouraging her and coaxing her along the way. That being said, Namine was still very meek and it took a lot of encouragement for her to realize that her feelings weren't a burden to anyone. Shadow had no such qualms. He knew he was valued as a person and an individual.

"I've...started seeing a woman. Omar's daughter, Jane. I..." he looked down sheepishly. It was almost embarrassing confiding this sort of thing to Aqua. Would she tattle on him with the Seelies? No, Aqua was too good. He shook his head. "...I can't decide whether or not I care about her because she doesn't deserve the cruelty life handed her...or that..." No, he wasn't going to say it out loud. Or at least, word it differently, "...or that I..." he mumbled it in defeat, "or that I like her."

"Oh!"
It was a surprise that Shadow (of all people) to come to her when he was facing any sort of love conundrum. Jane had a very rough go at things. It was probably the worst kept secret in town. She also hated cops. But lately, Jane had seemed more subdued, less openly hateful of anyone in the uniform. She hadn't said why, not to anyone. And yet... At Sunshine and Riku's wedding, she had danced with Shadow with no qualms. That had caught everyone by surprise. It was almost as big of a deal as the bride and groom themselves.
"Well... how do you feel when you're around her?" she asked.

"I feel...like I don't want to confirm all the awful things she's grown to think from one jackass abusing his privilege. She says I'm doing my job, but...I want her to know me more than just the one 'decent cop' in Bellerouge."
It was the best way he could go about it without sounding too mushy, like he was one her Aqua's girlfriends. He didn't like the idea of Jane just viewing him as the nice cop who was fun to have a beer with. He wanted more from her. More...well...more than just being a friend. Sure they had danced at Sunshine and Riku's wedding and her hatred of cops had gone from hatred to tolerate, but a part of him wondered if this was just a sign of luck.

"Maybe you should tell her that," Aqua offered. "Straightforward honesty."
Jane had to have realized by now that she was spending more and more time with Shadow, more than she did with even her father or her new budding family. The young troll had looked happy when she had been with Shadow on the dance floor, smiling the likes that Aqua had never seen on her before. After everything they had been through, they both deserved a bit of happiness. Even if they happened to find it in one another.
