Adeline was trying not to let this bother her. She really was. But no matter how much she told herself that things would be okay, that she'd tried everything she could to get Ariel to stop before resorting to violence, she still felt her guilt eating away at her like a parasite. Of course, news about her confrontation with Ariel had hit the news. She'd attacked her in front of tons of people. It'd be insane not to report on it. It was just like when she'd first summoned Thrax. Every time she saw someone talk about how she'd killed Ariel herself, her gut twisted. She was still coming to terms with the fact that she'd taken a life, that she'd killed with her bare hands. She knew she had to do it, that Ariel would have killed her if she hadn't, but that didn't make it any easier to deal with. Not to mention, she hadn't been the only person the white-haired demon woman had approached. According to the Others Unit, her name was Lilith, and she'd messed with quite a few people. Every time Adeline thought about her, her blood ran cold. Not only had Lilith managed to beat her with almost no effort at all, she'd removed her memories of their encounter. That took power, and Adeline shuddered to think about what she could do with that much strength. At the moment however, she honestly tried to relax as she sat under a tree, watching people walk by and go about their day. This was the first time she'd been out in days, and she knew she shouldn't become a shut-in like she usually did when she was stressed. But either Ariel or Lilith were always on her mind, and she found herself disinterested in what was going on about her. She idly plucked strands of grass from the ground, breaking them into tiny pieces before reaching for another.

Jenna, who was currently chasing a squirrel to calm herself, perked her ears at the sound of a familiar heartbeat. Letting the squirrel escape up a different tree, she loped over to where the heartbeat was coming from. "Adeline!" She called out as she came closer. Hopefully, her speaking didn't startle the other girl like it did last time.

Adeline glanced up when she heard a voice call her name. To her surprise, it was Jenna, and she was looking a bit perky. Maybe she was just in a good mood? Adeline wished she could feel the same. Still, she gave a little smile and a wave. "Hey Jenna," she greeted. "Looks like you're having a good day."

Jenna's tail started to wag like a normal dog would do, at being recognized. "Just clearing my head." She said with a huge grin. She tilted her head as she picked up on Adaline's mood. "Something on your mind?" She asked sitting down beside the young girl. "Anything you want to talk about?"

Adeline gave a sigh as she leaned her head back against the tree. Jenna asking if there was anything she wanted to talk about was a pretty broad question. Where should she start? She was quiet for a long moment before finally giving an answer. "You remember how I told you about those dreams I was having?" she asked. "Where the mystery woman kept popping up? And I couldn't figure out who she was?" She wrapped her arms around her knees. "Well, that finally came to a head not too long ago. And the local reporters have been having a field day with it."

Not wanting to interrupt the young girl, Jenna kept silent. She simply nodded in response to the questions. She remembered chatting about Thrax and Pitch. She also remembered telling Adaline what she was. Her mind snapped back to the present conversation at the mention of the press. "I tend to not pay too much attention to the media." She admitted. "They tend to jump to a conclusion and only report things that support that." Noticing Adeline's body language, she gently put a paw on her friend's shoulder. "What happened? If you're in trouble, I'd like to help."

Adeline swallowed. Jenna had no idea. She'd have to tell her herself. Her stomach churned as she tried to find the right words. "The mystery woman turned out to be...an ex-girlfriend, of Thrax's. She blamed me for his death and wanted to kill me in revenge." She let out a breath before continuing. "I tried everything, Jenna. I tried convincing her that Thrax was an asshole and never really loved her. I tried running away. I tried telling her not to fight. She wouldn't listen. And I..." She swallowed again. "I ended up killing her. My demon side came out and I just...threw everything I had at her. I killed her in the most brutal way possible. I literally crushed her heart with my bare hands as she begged me to stop." Her voice shook and her fingers clenched tightly around her arms. She could still feel her magic and demon power pulsing through her entire body. She could still feel the way Ariel's heart had burst like an overripe orange. And it made her feel sick.

As Adeline talked, Jenna's eyes widened with each new revelation. She waited a few minutes so she could process what her friend had told her. The way she saw it was that she had killed in self-defense. True it was a very brutal way to kill, but if Jenna was being honest, she had seen and done worse when she was with her pack. Taking a deep breath she began to speak. "It was in self-defense Adeline. You shouldn't blame yourself for that. As for crushing her heart, I've seen and done worse with my pack when I was younger. I'm not trying to pretend that it's nothing, because it's not. I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through." She said hoping her friend would see that she was trying to ease her guilt and make her feel better.

Adeline was quiet for a moment. At least Jenna understood, and had apparently done worse. But she wasn't sure if that would help her feel better. "I know I had to do it," she said softly. "But I still feel so torn up about it. She was like that because Thrax manipulated her and abused her. I probably had a good chance of ending up like that if I went with him. She was...someone I could have become." If things had turned out differently, if Adeline had given in and just let Thrax take her, she could have easily ended up just like Ariel. And that haunted her.

For a few seconds, Jenna didn't say anything. What could she even say to help comfort her friend after a statement like that? After a few more seconds of thought, she decided to take a page out of Jim Colt's book. "Well, the good news and the important thing is that you didn't become that. Which tells me that you are stronger than you think." She said turning her ears toward Adeline to listen to her heart like she was listening for the bravery.

"That's the other bad part," Adeline said, her stomach clenching. "I didn't even do it out of anger or fear. I did it...to protect someone." She paused for a moment, realizing that she hadn't even told Jenna yet that she and Pitch were together. Maybe she already knew. Axel certainly did. She only hesitated for a moment though before continuing. "She threatened Pitch. She wanted to go after him after she was done with me. And...I just couldn't let that happen. My demon side came out not for me, but for him. I killed her to keep him safe." She gave a shudder. "People always use the expression that they would kill for someone they loved. It's not just an expression for me anymore. I literally killed for him. And my power was so much stronger because of that."

While Jenna hadn't known whether Adeline and Pitch were an item, she had her suspicions. When she had first met Adeline, and Pitch had been brought up, she had heard how Adeline's heart had skipped a few beats. "How is using your powers to protect someone a bad thing?" She asked tilting her head in confusion. "I mean aside from the whole killing aspect."

"I know, it's stupid," Adeline sighed. "I know I shouldn't feel this way, and I know I had no other choice. I just can't help...but feel guilty about it all. Confronting Ariel made me realize that I would literally kill for someone I cared about. And that...scares me." God knew this wouldn't be the only time someone would threaten Pitch. And any of her friends could be in danger at a moment's notice. Would she go postal every time their lives were in danger? Would she have to continue to get blood on her hands in order to keep her loved ones safe? Adeline had never imagined herself to be a killer. She always thought she was human enough to resist it. But this whole thing with Ariel had proved otherwise. And it made Adeline worry that maybe she wasn't as removed from her demon side as she once thought.

Jenna nodded in understanding when Adeline said that she was scared about what she was able to do. She could empathize with that. "Sometimes it can be scary to see the extent of your powers." Again she turned her ears towards Adeline's chest. "But, if it makes you feel better, I can hear more human than demon." She said with a smile. While that didn't necessarily mean that it would be the same when she used her powers when she was mad, Jenna believed that her friend was stronger than her demon side.

Adeline gave a little laugh, although there wasn't much humor in the sound. "Thanks," she replied. At least Jenna thought she wasn't turning into something horrible. If anything, she probably knew what real monsters were, and if she didn't think Adeline was one...that made her feel a bit better. She and Pitch were similar in that way. They'd both seen horrible enough things that they could recognize good when it came across their path. Adeline could see the good in others. She was constantly telling Pitch that he was a good man at heart. She just had trouble seeing it in herself sometimes.
