Weiss felt like there had been plenty of buzz about her when she'd left her parents and all the horrible abuse they'd done over the years finally came to light. It almost seemed to pale in comparison to the buzz going on around her now. She was the youngest person ever to be nominated for Voodoo Queen, and that made everyone feel excited and curious about the upcoming trials. Not to mention, Weiss was a bit different from the other candidates when it came to actually serving the community and helping those in need. Weiss felt like eyes were on her wherever she went, and it was starting to make her feel antsy. Normally, this would be when she'd throw herself into sword training or brush up on her voodoo spells. But Riku had been keeping an eye on her to make sure she didn't overwork herself, and he'd probably tell her to relax if he caught her training right now. Instead, she headed to the waterfront, hoping it would help her calm down a bit. She leaned against a railing, listening to the sound of the water lapping against the boardwalk and watching the boats go by. People hurried by, either with fish they'd just caught or hoping to catch one of the touristy steam boats to get a nice view of the bayou. All the noise might have been overwhelming for others, but Weiss felt like it provided a nice distraction from the worry she was feeling.

Wally had rarely made his way to the waterfront. It wasn't that he hated the place, it didn't bring him bad memories or anything like that, it was more of that his modeling jobs and catching bad guys never took him to that part of the area. Today though, it felt like it was almost a too perfect of a day. No criminal acts, and no modeling gig. What was he supposed to do with his time? He was sure that if he looked hard enough he could have found something interesting to work on, an old science thing or even work on some new fighting moves to help with the whole hero thing. That wasn't what he wanted to do though.
He had found himself out on the waterfront, just by accident. His feet just took him there, a simple walk had led him somewhere he had never thought about visiting. It was certainly a nice place, a bit crowded but nothing that seemed too tourist attraction like. His green eyes went to the view of the ocean and he whistled.
"Now this is what i call a nice view."

Despite the fact that Weiss had been zoning out, her head still perked up when she heard a familiar voice. It belonged to the only person who made her heart flutter like a humming bird's wings. She turned around, and there he was. "Wally, hey!" she said enthusiastically as she waved. She hadn't seen him in a long time, not since she'd realized that she'd fallen head over heels for the guy. He'd been on her mind a lot though, especially after she'd told Elsa about him and how she liked him. She was still trying to figure out how to tell when would be the right time to tell him how she felt, if there ever was a right time. The very idea of confessing to him nearly made her quake in her boots. Still, she couldn't help but feel happy to see him.

His heart went up to his throat at the moment he heard her voice. "Weiss!" he smiled with a big goofy grin. He was trying not to make himself look stupid. He had to make an impression on everyone lately and what with his modeling gig, he had to be careful in case word got out. he wasn't as big as Adrien but he could never be careful. Especially with Weiss's reputation. "What brings you out here?" he asked, making his way up to her.
"I figured you would be singing or somethin'."

"Singing might have to take a backseat for a little bit," Weiss replied. "A new Voodoo King or Queen is gonna be chosen soon. And I...kinda got nominated." Truth be told, she did feel a little bad about putting off doing work with the Bilge Rats. For a while, they'd been only to do small-scale stuff when Omar was in the hospital. Now, she had to face the trials in becoming the new Voodoo Queen, if she could pass them and get enough votes. The band pretty much agreed that that took priority over practice right now. Besides, if she did win, she could do even more stuff with them in the future. Just imagining the kind of charity concerts they could put on with her new title made her excited. She just had to win first.

He wasn't sure that his smile could get any wider or his eyes getting any wider. "Shut up!" he said with excitement, "That's amazing!" Voodoo King and Queen, that wasn't something that made any sense to him, but he dared not voice that kind of thing since it was something that Weiss had dedicated her life to. Some day maybe he would ask her to explain it all. "What do you have to do to win?" It sounded like a big deal and a bit dangerous too. Would she be okay? Would there be any fighting involved?

Wally seemed pretty proud of Weiss for getting the nomination. And she couldn't help but smile at the praise. Despite all her nervousness, she knew this was the best chance she had of making some good changes around here. And she was going to give it her all. Wally asked what she had to do to win, and she brushed a lock of hair out of her face before answering. "It's three tests, I guess you could say," she said. "One tests mental fortitude, another tests your voodoo skills, and then the last event is a debate between all us candidates. After that, whoever gets the most votes from the voodoo community wins." She stood up a little straighter. "A Voodoo King or Queen has to be proficient at spells, potions, and some combat. They can be called on to deal with some pretty nasty spirits or possessions, and you gotta be pretty damn good at voodoo to pull it off. And they have to be strong of mind as well. You can't have a Voodoo King or Queen that buckles too easily under pressure or wimps out all the time." Really, the tests were created to find someone that was good at voodoo, could be confident in their position, and had good plans in mind to help the community. Of course, ever since rich snobs had gotten a hold of the game, they had different definitions on what was good for the community. Weiss was hoping to change that.

Wow. It sounded like being a Voodoo King or Queen was serious business. Debates, mental and psychical tests. It almost sounded like high school. Too many tests. "Sounds like you would be like a modern day ghost hunter. Which sounds pretty legit." he replied, dealing with possession was not something to take likely. Even if he hadn't believed it, the idea of having something like a ghost take over was creepy and uncomfortable. It set shivers up his spine.
"I think you got it though, you seem pretty composed to me." he frowns slightly. "Do you get to meet the other candidates?"

Weiss gave a little laugh. "We'll change the title from Voodoo Queen to Voodoo Ghostbuster," she joked. That was certainly one way of looking at it. In a way, it was true though. Voodoo priests getting rid of a bad spirit was kind of like the Ghostbusters, minus the ghost-sucking vacuums. Wally asked if she would meet the other candidates later on and she gave a nod. "Yeah, at some point. I mean, they'll probably have us all in the same place for the tests. Whether that means we'll actually get to watch each other, I don't know." It certainly sounded intimidating, facing the tests with all the other candidates judging you. Weiss doubted any of them were big fans of hers. Sure, some would probably still be nice to her face, but others probably wouldn't. "Outside of the tests though, we usually stay away from each other. Less chance of someone getting a person riled up and starting a fight or something, you know?" Of course, that was strictly forbidden. If one candidate attacked another, they would be disqualified in an instant. Weiss had read some accounts of candidates trying to get around that though by hiring others to do the attacking for them. It had been quite the controversy back in the day.

He laughed slightly at the joke and then nodded at the explanation. It sounded very real, the idea of a bunch of voodoo queens and kings being around each other did sound a bit like trouble waiting to happen, especially if they all had different morals and of course, not all people were willing to play cleanly in such a way. Some competitors would play dirty and may try to get means by erasing the competition.
Not that any of them were going to try to do that, and he was sure that Weiss would make sure she was protected. "Sounds like a real dangerous competition."

"It can be," Weiss replied. "But I want to do what it takes to earn the title. I mean, if I'm not strong enough to get through whatever they throw at me, then I certainly can't handle being Voodoo Queen." Weiss kept telling herself that she'd lived through way worse, but this whole thing still gave her the heebie-jeebies if she thought about it too long. "Us LaFayette's have had a couple of people from our family hold the title over the generations, and it was always something my parents wanted to try and make happen again. They wanted to try and prep my brother to do it, when we were younger. My dad had the famous last name, my mom had a reputation for being an accomplished voodoo priestess, it would have been easy for them. Riku didn't want it though, never did." She remembered Riku having many fights about that with their parents. At the time, Weiss hadn't understood why he'd choose being a police officer over possibly becoming Voodoo King one day. She'd just felt like he was causing more strife in the family than there already was, and it had made her bitter for a long time.

"Wow. Sounds like a lot of pressure." Wally said after a few moments of silence. He was mainly trying to process all that had happened between now and then, and he was slowly coming to more terms to Weiss's world was much more different than his. His mom and him had never had the easiest life, moving place to place but she had never had a reputation that he felt like he had to follow. At least the girl in front of him was not complaining about it. In fact, he was surprised to see that she was embracing that. But it made him a bit more determined to support her.

"It was," Weiss agreed. "Although...honestly, it wasn't always like that. In the beginning, at least." She hesitated for a moment, her eyes looking down at the water rather than Wally. She hadn't really told anyone this before. But after letting out a breath, she continued. "When Riku and I were really young, my mom didn't like how my dad treated us. She actually stood up for us, got onto him for the bad things that he did. Although that didn't really make him stop. That just made him hurt her as well as us. She kept trying, though. I think she just really wanted to keep the family together at all costs, and she thought that if she kept pushing hard enough, things would get better. But..." She went quiet again. This next part was hard to talk about, and for a moment, she wasn't sure if she could do it.

Weiss's mom sounded a lot like his own. Just by the way she stood up for him when he got into trouble and it always bothered him that he felt like a burden to her. The fact that Weiss's own father had hurt them that way was awful and he could tell it pained her to talk about it. "Hey, you don't have to talk about it." he said gently. "We all have things in our past that we don't like to talk about."
He didn't want to push her into something like that, right before competing. Past wounds and things could weigh on a person for a long time and it could effect them in the wrong ways. "Thank you for telling me though."

"No, I want to," Weiss insisted. Sure, she might feel a little scared about it, but if there was anything she'd learned since leaving her parents, it was that opening up about things that hurt you was the first step in feeling better about them. And if there was anyone she felt like she could open up to, it was Wally. "There was one night, my mom got into a fight with my dad. I don't...even remember what it was about, really. I think it might have been about me and Riku. But, she went too far, made me dad really mad. He hit her and...she was right next to a set of stairs." Weiss let out a breath. "She lost her balance and fell, got a pretty nasty gash on her face. That's where that scar on her face came from." Her hands tightened around the railing. "I think that was what finally broke her. She had a choice. She could either keep trying to fight my dad, and end up getting hurt again. Or she could go along with whatever he wanted so she could avoid his anger. And she chose the latter, deciding to become as hateful and spiteful as he was to save her own skin." She looked up towards the sky. "If anyone asked about her scar, she just said she tripped and fell down the stairs. She never said anything about how my dad helped caused it. And...Riku and I never really talked about it with anyone. Until now, that is."
