"This is BULLSHIT!" Shadow growled, punching the side of his desk. The whole plan had been set. The discovery of the La Llorona Killer being back meant it was good time to exercise any newcomers to the field. The Others Unit had been called to identify the bodies. And what did they get for the blood, sweat and tears that they shed when assisting in the case years ago? A request from the chief for the Others Unit to stay out of it, and according to the files, there was technically no trace evidence of it being a supernatural case. "This is the thanks we get for recovering a new case?"
Sunshine bit her lip. When Shadow was angry, it was difficult to say anything without getting yelled at. It had never happened to her, but she had seen him do it before. She wrung her hands, looking at the clock, knowing the other members of their team would be coming in soon. "Well, it's not like they told us to really leave it alone...I mean, the plan today was, what, review slash teach?"
Shadow was gripping his desk at this point. The grip was so hard that his own knuckles were starting to shake, and his inhibitor rings were beginning to glow. If he let loose, they would have gone flying and the office would have been a wreck. But instead of making them fall off, Shadow took one quick, shuddering breath. The rings cooled to their gold metallic sheen, and his grip released. Sunshine was right. All he wanted to do was get everyone on the same page as to what was going on. They couldn't go in blind. He opened the file and began pinning pictures on the case board. They included a photograph of the killer's mark, the beer stained newspaper article he had collected from yesterday, an article dated a few years ago, and a few artistic interpretations of the killer and the legend this sadist was named after.

As Shadow went to work pinning the various photographic evidence to the board, a light knock came from the door before it was opened by Pitch. He had received the time and date of when the BPD Others Unit was to meet and discuss the latest string of child murders. As always, he had arrived exactly on time but paused when he looked at Sunshine and then Shadow. From the mood of the room it was clear that his fellow Other detective was agitated.
"Shadow. Sunshine."
Pitch gave a small frown at the feelings that still radiated off of Shadow despite his calm and collected façade. However, he merely moved over to one of the open seats and turned the chair to watch as each picture was added to the board, his yellow eyes darting around each photograph and the slight frown still present.

Aqua pushed the door open carefully. She was carrying a to-go tray of coffee and tea for everyone that was working the case. She had gotten an assortment of things because she didn't know how long they would be working this one. Caffeine was always appreciated in this line of work because they worked odd hours. She set the hot beverages down on the table, far from the files in case there was any accident.
"So, where are we on this?" Aqua asked.
After Anna was done with the children, parents would be called if they had filed missing children reports. For the few mangled children, Namine might be called in to sketch their appearance without the gator bite marks. Aqua feared for the few children who had no one to report them. Her thoughts drifted to the little bear that she had found, which was being sorted out in forensics in case the bear held any trace evidence.
There was an obvious tension in the air, particularly around Shadow. He was upset about something. Aqua frowned. Was it about the case? Had they messed something up in evidence? She bit her lip, afraid to ask. But someone had to. Things weren't going to solve themselves without the four of them working together on this with the forensics team.

Jim and Dimitri were a few seconds behind Aqua. Neither of them looked like they had gotten much sleep, but that was usual for them. "So what do we have so far?" Jim asked taking a seat beside Shadow.
"What's eating you?" Dimitri asked Shadow sitting beside his brother. He shot a glare at Pitch. He didn't trust demons even if they, supposedly, were on the same side.

"We've got a nice kick to the ass," Shadow snapped at the people coming in. The victims would be described by Anna later, and he was too angry to even give the lecture he planned on giving. He threw the note from the chief on the desk at the center of the room, which was no longer occupied. "Pass that around. It's better than me cursing up a storm." He sunk into his desk and began twirling one of the inhibitor rings.
"But why dismiss us from the case when we were involved with finding the new bodies?" Sunshine asked. "It's...kind of unfair!"
Shadow shook his head. "Anna got an ID on one body. Johnny Samos, aged 7. All thanks to DNA found on the bear Aqua found. The other two...are still being examined."

A soft noise of disbelief left Aqua's lips. She picked up the note from the desk. Indeed, city hall wanted them off the case without investigation. She could think of a thousand things they could do to get leads. This case wasn't even cold yet! And they didn't know the murderer's cooling off period. For all they knew, they could already have the next set of victims. Time was on the clock. The longer they sat there, the more of a chance the killer would strike again. It was hard enough this go round to fish these poor children out of the water.
"That's... We haven't even launched an investigation yet!" she protested. "We don't stop this killer now there will be more little kids in that bayou any day now! We would basically give this person a free pass!"
Johnny Samos. Only seven years old. It made Aqua's heart sting. Only seven. He should have lived much, much longer than that. Because of this person's heartlessness, he was struck short. She wouldn't let this one go. So what if she was already working her own cases? This could cost her the badge if city hall found out, but who cares? Her job was to protect and serve. How was she protecting anyone if she let a killer walk free among them?
"I won't quit this case."

Esme was in the corner inwardly seething not only had the killer murdered kids but he murdered one of her girl's daughters. Her eyes flashed the yellowy red of her abilities as her hands coat themselves in fire. She didn't need to speak for her righteous fury was palpable to feel in the air in their office space. Keeping away from the others so she didn't accidentally flambe one of them on accident. Then the only words she spoke since all of this happened were uttered "Shadow... he murdered one of the girls little ones.. and I don't give two shits about what the city hall has to say... He hurt my family and he will pay with blood."

Pitch's eyes had only briefly darted away from the board as each member of the gathered team expressed their outrage and disbelief at being informed they would not be continuing on the "La Llorona" case. Even he couldn't deny that the announcement caused a rise in his own emotions, although he kept them off of his face for the moment.
Aqua and Esme had offered their own feelings on the subject and Shadow's quiet anger hung over the space like a thunderstorm threatening to break. However, when there was a moments lull in the sudden outbursts, Pitch spoke.
"Putting personal pride and morals aside, it also doesn't make sense. By removing us from the case, the BPD are losing those who were present at the crime scenes, located the bodies and are already familiar with what information we have on the murders. It is not only a waste of resources that could easily be utilized but an idiotic move."
Despite the insult, Pitch's voice had remained calm and reasoning throughout the time he spoke. And even now he couldn't help but wonder why they had been removed from the case. Something else was at play here.

"But that's the thing, Pitch," Sunshine argued, "normal cops were at the crime scenes, too." She put her hands on her hips with her green eyes glittering with unshed tears. "they're kicking us out because they think there was nothing supernatural about the crime!" Maybe she was overreacting, but it was just how she was feeling. It was unfair to get the boot so early in the case. She took a quick, shuddering breath, wondering when other cops were coming in. "I can't believe the rest of the team isn't here!"
Shadow just shrugged. "Their loss. Korra would blast everything on fire." He glanced down at the case file. Sunshine was right; they were getting the boot because the evidence of drowning meant nothing to do with supernatural encounters. There were no dyrads in the area, the ides of it being a drowning by mermaids was out of question - although the earliest documents of the La Llorona Killer did leave that up to debate. The only mystery was who left the burning. "And solving this case for the sake of revenge is just being selfish, Esme! Last I checked, we were a team." He pulled out several pictures and posted them up on the analysis board. "and since we are a team, we should talk about this case since this isn't the first time we've seen it."
Sunshine's eyes widened. She knew Shadow had been on the force for a while, but did that mean he had been around with the first La Llorona killings? What other members of the Others Unit knew about this. "So...when did this start?" she asked.
"I thought it'd be easier to talk about over time," Shadow admitted. A photo labeled 'LLK 2014' of a dead body was posted. "This was the very first killing. Penny Margory, age 7. She was found drowned with the mark on her hand. Two other kids were found, but we couldn't get any IDing." he made a shuddering sigh. "We got the nickname from this," he took out a scribbled piece of paper in a plastic bag allowing the detectives to pass it around, "the writer called themselves the La Llorona Killer. An intern at the time translated it as 'the weeping woman', which meant we had a primary target..." he paused, waiting to see if anyone could continue.

"You believed a woman is killing these kids?" Aqua asked.
It technically wasn't impossible but statistically female serial killers were marginally slim compared to killers who were men. But with a alias like the weeping woman it was hard not to draw the conclusion. Hence why it was a bad idea to make the killers because they tended to make cops bias in interrogations. Female killers typically showed some level of remorse unless it was a crime of passion. But this wasn't love gone wrong, particularly when children were involved but these three, no six, were dumped where the elements would clean away evidence and rot away at the little bodies. There was no remorse, no mercy and no hesitation in the death of these children. They had been left where animals could eat them!
"Did we have any suspects the first time around?" Aqua asked.
The case has started when she was just a rookie cop, fresh to the streets and still on her ride along with her ex-partner. She wouldn't have been let into such a high profile case like that straight out of academy, best test scores or not. There were plenty of things classes didn't teach you that the experience of her patrols did. She had been through a lot her first few years with her shield.
