Yang cursed under her breath as she hurried through the park. She hadn't meant to stay out so late, but things had just kind of dragged on today. She had been trying to get any info on this La Llorona killer all day. Sure, she could have gone to the police, but she wasn't about to ask for their help. They probably wouldn't have given her inside information anyway. Instead, she had hit the streets, asking some of the shadier folk what they knew. They didn't have much info though, and that got Yang a little frustrated. Until this killer was caught, she would be worried anytime her kids went out somewhere without her. f she didn't get back to her hideout soon, they would probably start looking for her themselves, and that was the last thing she wanted. She didn't want their names headlining the obituaries.

Vanitas was enjoying his freedom after his short stint with the police. One night was enough with them and he was more than happy to return to his shadows to lick his wounded pride. This was his domain once the sun went down, as did most of the slums when the light was snuffed out. Lots of people tended to avoid going out at night. So he was quite surprised to see a familiar shape darting through the dark of the park. He smirked as he sat on the park bench, draping his arms over the back of it. "So, have a good time hanging out with the kiddies?" he asked mockingly.

Yang didn't even notice Vanitas was there until he spoke to her. And when she did, she instantly narrowed her eyes at him and curled her hands into fists. Vanitas was number 1 on her Shit List, and just the mention of him could put her in a bad mood. So, anyone could imagine what she must have felt when seeing him in person. "Why am I not surprised to see your ugly mug at this hour?" she sneered.

"You're no fun," Vanitas sighed. "Not even a 'how do you do, Van? It's been a while.' Talk about no manners." He looked up at her impassively. He actually wasn't looking for a fight for once. It wasn't because of the police, but just because he wasn't in the mood for one, which was odd, even for him. Or rather odd especially for him. "What has you out so late, little girl? You look like you're afraid the big bad wolf is going to get you."

Yang rolled her eyes as she ran a hand through her hair. "Bozos like you don't deserve good manners," she replied. Vanitas seemed to have an inkling of what was going on, as he commented about how frazzled she looked being out this late. "I can handle myself just fine. It's others I'm worried about," she said. "With somebody like the La Llorona killer running around, any kid is fair game. He might even be creepier than you."

"No one said the killer was a he." Vanitas shrugged. "The victims are kids after all. But it's not like it's any of my concern." The La Llorona killer had not gotten involved with any of his businesses so he wasn't particularly pressed to get tangled up in that hot mess. Not with the cops crawling all over it. "Just think about it. The name is Spanish. La is a feminine title. Loosely translated... Our killer is called the Moaning. Wonder why that is..."

Yang raised an eyebrow. "The ratio of male serial killers to female is 19 to 1. The odds of this freak being a woman is unlikely." She hated to admit Vanitas had a point though. There was a chance that the killer could be female. But, the chances of that were pretty low. She shrugged. "I don't know why people come up with these freak names. All I know is that there's been plenty of victims and the police haven't found jack squat." She sighed. "Typical of them," she muttered.

"Yeah well, let's just say that they're not exactly being allowed to flex their muscles." Vanitas shrugged. "So who has the cops in their pocket? That's the real question." He happened to know for a fact that there was someone high up with lots of power, trying to make this case go away, swept under the rug like the nameless kiddies left in the morgue with no one to ID them. "But really? What's it matter if a few kids disappear, am I right?"

"What, you think someone's pulling the strings on this whole investigation?" Yang asked. She wasn't much for conspiracies, but the idea of some jerk in charge of the police who decided that some cases weren't important was enough to get her blood boiling. She wouldn't be totally surprised if that was the case, though. She had seen first-hand some of the scumbags that had managed to become police officers. She had lost faith in them hiring good, honest people years ago. She glared at Vanitas. "What matters is that they're supposed to be kept safe and they're not," she replied vehemently. "If people can't protect something as innocent as a little kid, then what good are they?" In a way, Yang felt the same way about herself. If she couldn't use her strength and skills to protect the kids under her wing, then what good was she?

"Like I said. Not my problem if they are." Vanitas said. This was all just something for him to lean back and watch. Entertainment, if you will, watching the cops and civilians panic as a murderer lurked in their midst. "Look where innocence got you," Vanitas said, gesturing to her. "Pretty much mother of unwanted brats. Can't go off and do your own thing. Lose your mind if something happened to the little annoyances. Just like last time."

Yang sighed. How could Vanitas be so passive about this? It infuriated her. "They're not unwanted if they're with me," she replied. "Everyone needs someone to look after them, and that's what I'm gonna be for them." She never saw herself as held down by the kids she took in. She made them happy, and they gave her a purpose, something to do with her life. It wasn't like she was the only one doing this, anyway. Duncan took in strays he found too, and Omar admired what she was doing. When Vanitas mentioned the "last time" though, that was when she got really mad. "Don't remind me of that," she snapped, her fingernails digging into her palms. "I don't know how you got fun out of making me do bad things, but it's not happening again."

"Lucky them." Vanitas said. He leaned back against the park bench, closing his eyes. He was tired. He hadn't slept since his arrest. That stupid demon cop had done something to him, screwed with his head. He didn't know what the other demon did but he would make him pay. Him, that blue faery and that stupid troll would all pay for what they did. He leaned up to smirk at her. "Yeah, yeah, we both know it's not going to happen right now, but who knows what the future holds?"

Vanitas didn't seem very intimidated by Yang's temper. Then again, he never was. What does it take to scare this guy? she thought. Everybody was scared of something, weren't they? "Screw the future," she replied. "The present's all I'm living for." Yang never asked herself how long she could keep her little operation going, or what might happen if the police found out where here hideout was. Any thoughts like that were locked away so they wouldn't cross her mind ever again. She couldn't afford to worry about stuff like that.

"Well that's boring," Vanitas complained. "But so are you." He leaned his head back again now that he lost interest in her again. Her and her kids were boring. At least for now. He didn't have the energy to possess anyone or stir up trouble right now. He was just getting by on pure sass alone. "You had much more fire in you when we first met."

"Trust me, there's plenty of fire in me," Yang replied. "And after hearing about what you did to Omar, it got really stirred up." She was tempted to start a fight right now, but Omar had cautioned her against that, saying that it would be pointless. All it would do was just make things worse. Still, that didn't mean that Yang didn't want to. She hated people who messed with her friends.
