Aqua took a deep breath. After her graduation ceremony from the academy, she was assigned to the BPD. It was both exhilarating and frightening at the same time. It was no secret that the BPD Others Unit had their hands full of only the highest priority cases. Others also had a higher rate of being discriminated against by humans because they were different, more powerful and some toeing the very line of dangerous. But with her head held high, she walked into the precinct. She was almost knocked right back out of the door because of how many people were running around in the office. Officers bringing in suspects, people being booked, and paperwork was as scary as some of the felons based on how high some of the desks were stacked.
"Excuse me," Aqua asked one of the nearby officers, "Where is the bull pen?"
"That way," the officer said, gesturing over his shoulder rather vaguely.
Aqua sighed. Very well. It would seem she would have to do things on her own. So she walked in the direction that he had gestured. Luckily she found the room with ease, despite his less than upfront directions, but only after weaving her way through the chaos of the floor. Apparently there had been a riot nearby after an elected official was accused of taking bribes in office to create anti-Others legislation, which with luck would not come to pass.
The bull pen, or basically mission assignment room, was just as full as the busy office floor. Aqua managed to find a seat nearest the window. It was raining pretty hard outside. She was never one to mind the rain too much. Personally, she liked it. Humans just liked to play up the meaning of rain in their little stories, as if it were something tragic and something to be wary of because it was a sign bad things were coming. Aqua just found rain to be refreshing. Like it was washing things away and there was a clean start after it was over.
"Okay, let's get to business here, we have some new recruits," a higher ranking officer said, gathering the attention of the small space with ease, "We'll be assigning each rookie to an older officer. This is your partner for the next year. Get to know each other and watch each other's backs."
Aqua winced. He made it sound like they were going off to war. Maybe they were at a war with crime but this officer gave these officers the impression they were going off to battle. She remembered bits and pieces of the Black War. Mostly, she just remembered all of the adults she had been around were sad. She had been young, whisked away to the safety of an orphanage untouched by the outside world – for the most part. Because she was an Other, she was never adopted, so she aged out of the program and joined the police academy. She worked hard, earned top marks in her class and graduated at a record rate.
She sat, waiting anxiously for her name to be called so she could meet her partner. She watched as many of the people in the new Others Unit were partnered off. A harpy partnered with a troll. There was a nymph that partnered with a pyraid. A satyr was partnered with a demon. The partnerships were odd, but it seemed like they would work. The duos had strengths and weaknesses. Together they could accomplish what they could not accomplish alone. Hopefully they would get along despite these differences.
"Aquamarine Malone."
She jolted, nearly fumbling to stand. Her chair made a loud scraping noise against the floor in her haste. Her hands clenched at her side as she tried to hide any signs of nervousness. This was her partner for an entire year. This could be a defining moment for her, depending on who she was partnered with. She was one of the last people left in the bull pen, since the partnerships had left as soon as they were assigned. She had to fight the urge to search the remaining faces for her soon to be partner. She kept her eyes ahead, at her directing officer.
"You're with Terrance Nova."
Only then did she turn to face the other officer. A man was standing, not too far from her. To her surprise, he was human. Just human. There wasn’t anything special about him. He was just human. The thought circled in her head. Human. Human. Human. Impassive blue eyes found hers. She smiled, but it wasn’t returned. Her smile wavered a little after that. Did he know she wasn’t human? She looked at her hands. Her glamour magic was working just fine. She looked human. Did he have something against non-humans?
"Come on. We’ve got work to do," he grunted.
Aqua nodded quickly. She moved her chair back in and followed after him. Terrance didn’t wait for her. He just kept walking, even as Aqua had to all but sprint to catch up to him. This wasn’t starting out the way she had hoped. She would have at least thought her partner would have been an Other like her or at least someone who could tolerate an ‘Other’ partner. This was going to make things so much more difficult for her. All she wanted to do was make sure she could fulfill her job to the fullest. Protect and serve.
"Also, it's Terra. Not Terrance." He said.
"It's nice to meet you Terra. I'm Aqua."
"Whatever."
