Aqua was beyond seething. She had just been informed that she had been on the force long enough that she was to get a new partner - a rookie no less and her first ride along partner. They would be together for a year before her partner would stand on their own. Despite every attempt to put this off, assure the chief she did not need a partner, her last encounter with a double arrest had proven otherwise since Pitch Black had to step in, taking time out of his day to assist her. If there was ever a time her colleagues wanted to avoid her, it was right now as she waited for this new guy to show up in the bull pen. Perhaps this was what her ex-partner felt when he was saddled with her. This absolute annoyance.
A ride along cop was no better than becoming a glorified babysitter until the rookie learned the ropes. It didn't matter if he was the top of his class or not. She had been and she was pretty much the screw up of the force. Worst of all, the chief had given her the day off to get to know this guy. Aqua didn't want to know him. She didn't want a partner. But it seemed no one cared about what she wanted at work. She could feel a headache starting to form and had to bite back a groan. This was going to be a long day.

Riku walked through the station to the bullpen the way he walked to anything; with confidence and purpose. He refused to let anybody see just how nervous and excited he was, though his lips kept twitching into a little smile every few minutes out of sheer joy that he was finally realizing his dream of becoming a cop. He paused long enough to ask who Aqua Malone was and once he got his answer he walked over to her.
“Ma’am” he said, though she looked barely older than he was. He blinked cornflower blue eyes at her and quirked an eyebrow at how bad-tempered she looked. Must have had a bad day. He rather hoped it wasn’t because of him. That would tip everything over into a bad encounter, and the bad vibes that would come from that was bad juju, which he would rather avoid. “I presume you are Officer Aqua Malone, correct? I’m Riku LaFayette” he hoped she wouldn’t recognize his last name and ask about his family. He didn’t want to talk about it.

Aqua closed her eyes and let out a slow breath. She heard her new partner introduce himself. If she just kept her eyes closed a little longer she could just pretend he wasn't talking to her, but she was struck by her own guilt. She had been so terrified walking through the doors her first day. Her ex-partner had been so harsh to her that she dreaded coming into work for weeks until he got used to her, or at least enough to be civil. She wasn't putting her best foot forward by ignoring the man.
So she opened her eyes. She looked over at the man. He was much taller than her. That was the first thing she noticed. Secondly, she noticed he was about her age. No wonder they assigned him to her. The older cops tended to be stuck in their ways. Perhaps she was still stuck in her own old ways. There was nothing she could do about it now and taking out her annoyance on the new guy wasn't going to make things easy for either of them. He didn't ask to be assigned to her.
"That's right." she said, aiming for polite. "So... Riku? Did they issue you your shield and piece yet?"

She looked equal parts annoyed and guilty and he wondered what about. He was really hoping it wasn’t him that she was annoyed with. Or getting a partner. But if she was there was nothing he could do about it. He couldn’t help but note that she was neutrally polite. Not angry but not happy either. That just could not be a good sign. She must be annoyed by him. So he refrained from commenting on how tiny she was to him. A pint sized cop. A Teacop. He had to literally bite his tongue from laughing at his own joke. He had a feeling the little blue haired woman wouldn’t appreciate the joke. When he trusted his own voice he shook his head at her question, and shrugged. “No, not yet. I figured I would meet you first and then go get it”

"Let's go then," Aqua said. "Can't have you running around without those."
She started to walk towards the security office, motioning for him to follow her. The office wasn't too busy today. A lot of her fellow officers were already out in the field, doing their work, but she and Riku would be doing the basics. Paper work, get his badge and gun, lockers, showing him to the desk which was right next to hers, show him their shared squad car, and lastly a tour of the place. At least it wasn't raining. It had been raining when she met her last partner and she thought it was a good sign...
"Just so you know, I have a bit of an... iron allergy, so to speak." Aqua explained in a professional manner. Allergy was mildly put. Iron burned her skin like hot oil to french fries but she wasn't going to scare her partner off with that right off the bat. "We're going to have to find an alloy that doesn't irritate the either of us in case we have to use each other's equipment in the field."

Riku followed Aqua and couldn’t help but look around as he did so. It wasn’t very busy in the place today, which probably meant that officers were out doing their jobs. Riku felt a thrill of excitement that he was finally completing his dream and joining the police department, even if it meant he had had to sacrifice the support of his family. He just couldn’t do what they wanted him to do. At least it had been a clean break, not even his sister talked to him anymore. He was kind of grateful for that at least. “An iron allergy? Oh like Faeries” was she a faery? He had never met one before, that would be pretty sweet. “I don’t have any allergies so to speak, but I don’t know why I need a gun. I have a sword and my powders and stuff...” he realized he might have spoken out of line as soon as the words left his mouth.

Aqua looked up at him quietly. So he knew about faeries. One step above her old partner - No! She had to stop thinking about that guy. Her partner was gone. This was her new partner. She remembered asking her partner why she needed a gun too. She could use magic. She had a weapon she preferred. She thought that it would be enough to handle anything on the streets. And worst of all, for her, she found herself giving the same explanation he did when he told her why she would need a gun.
"Not like a faery, I am a faery," Aqua said, patiently. "And the gun is for situations in which you cannot rely on... outside abilities. Gun first, then magic if you have it. In case you're arresting humans not... Others. Nice thing is, they've already got me on file so you won't have to jump any special hoops to get clearance for a different gun."
Her partner was gifted. That would be a nice change of pace. Her last partner had just been human.

Riku smiled. So his new partner was a faery? that was way cool. He nodded at the explanation, accepting it as it did make a lot of sense. "So a gun without iron. Alright" at least he didn't have to jump through special hoops to get the special gun. That was nice. "Do you think I could use my powders in combat? they're sleeping powders, confusion and temporary paralysis" nothing that would permanently harm the criminals, just things that would make it easier for capture. But it might be difficult to use the powders while chasing criminals. So he wanted to know what his new partner thought. She would more than likely have an idea and good input.

Aqua bit her lip. That was a bit of a grey area. There were things that they should do and things that they should try to avoid simply because it could create bad press for the BPD. The BPD wasn't exactly the best in anyone's books right now, particularly the Others Unit. But this new guy was trying. Aqua had become so weary with her job she had fallen into the motions of trying to keep the peace instead of actually keeping it because she wanted to.
"Perhaps. But only in the case of absolute emergency. We don't need anything falling back on our offices in case someone has a bad reaction." Aqua said. "It'll have to be a judgment call on the situation."

She looked hesitant for a moment before she answered and Riku nodded as she explained. Unconsciously, his hand went to his belt pouches where he kept the powders and various good luck charms, and safety charms for good measure. He figured on this job he needed all the good luck and safety he could get. "What type of gun should I get?" He asked causally as they made their way towards the area he would receive it. "Since iron is out of the question while I'm your partner"

"Well that depends on what you feel comfortable carrying," Aqua said. "I prefer a Smith and Wesson. But most of the other people in the office carry a Glock 19 or 22. Whatever you pick, they'll have it 3D printed." Each gun had pros and cons. Most people decided by the weight of the gun, what felt comfortable after firing and the number of bullets per magazine. Aqua personally didn't like guns. She preferred a non-violent route and a partner who tended to chose the same path was preferable. She stopped at the back desk where he would pick his gun. Someone brought out the choices for Riku. Laying out the three guns that Aqua told him about. "We can take them to the gun range if you want to fire them." Aqua offered. ((Going to leave this here so you can use this as gun references. It explains the different guns: www.criminaljusticedegreehub.com/popular-guns-for-law-enforcement/ ))

He nodded, already familiar with the three she mentioned from his days at the academy learning about them. "If they have a Beretta 92 I would like to carry that" Said Riku immediately. He enjoyed the feel of the gun and the look. It was also an aluminum alloy and had been used in the academy during shooting practices. He'd gotten comfortable with the gun and when they got to the counter politely asked if they had the Beretta as well. Lucky for him, they had one. He offered it to Aqua to hold. "It's aluminum alloy so it shouldn't burn you if you have to use it" He told her with a crooked smile. "It's light and durable too. I just prefer my powders but I could see myself firing this gun" He nodded when she offered to take him to the shooting range to shoot the gun. It would probably be best so he could see if this was really the gun for him.

"A Beretta should work." Aqua said.
This was an odd moment for Aqua. It was like she was being forced to let go of her ex-partner by taking on the new guy. It was both saddening and liberating at the same time. Aqua smiled, if only for Riku's sake, and she took the gun from his hand. She lifted it, as if she were going to fire, but it wasn't loaded. It was a nice, balanced gun. She had avoided the model because prior officers complained it was too bulky and heavy. She liked her gun because of the rail beneath the barrel where she could attach a flashlight. She cleared her throat and put the gun back on the counter for Riku.
"Let's hit the range." she suggested, before she started feeling any sentimentality about the situation.

Aqua seemed a little conflicted and Riku wondered why, and if they would ever become close enough to where she could feel like telling him. He picked up the gun after Aqua had set it down and nodded for her to lead the way. This was so exciting! "Wait though, shouldn't I get my badge first?" he asked suddenly and looked at Aqua questioningly. "It would probably be the best idea before we do anything else" He smiled at her and looked around, rubbing the back of his head. "Do I get it here or do I go somewhere else to receive my badge?"

Aqua stopped, then she sighed, not because of annoyance with him, but with the attendant who had just left to put the guns that Riku hadn't want away. She walked back to counter and rounded it. She then went digging through the cupboard in the back until she found his badge. She held it up to show Riku she found it. She then went back around the counter. Aqua held the badge out to Riku.
"Honestly, they'd lose their heads if they weren't attached." she said. "It's all yours."
