The first thing Aqua learned was that she had to have special equipment, much to the annoyance of her partner. The gun, the cuffs, her badge, it all had to be custom for her. When her equipment was issued to her, she hadn’t even thought to check the material and was sorely burned by the iron that they were made of. So she sat in their shared cubicle with her hands dipped in ice water. Terra was doing their paperwork. On top of that he had to put in the order request form for new equipment for her that was not made of iron so she could actually do her job without burning her skin. Terra had shown no sympathy for her, other than getting her the bowl of ice water and carefully setting it on the desk, most likely to avoid spilling it over their work.
"I'm sorry."
"You've said that already." He grunted.
"I know," she replied.
They lapsed back into silence, with only the scratching of Terra's pencil to fill the void of conversation. Aqua bowed her head. Only three days in and she was already counting the days until her sentence with this guy was up. Who would have thought she was the one who felt like a prisoner in this partnership? It was almost as bad as a jail sentencing. She would be tempted to show a little mercy on the people they arrested if they really weren't thugs and criminals.
"So the burn thing…" Terra said slowly, "That happen all the time?"
"Just with iron," Aqua said. "I guess it's the human equivalent of an allergic reaction."
"What are you?" Terra asked but then he seemed to realize what he had just asked. "Er, if that’s okay."
"I'm a faery."
Aqua removed her hands from the ice water. It looked like Terra was about to protest when she dried them off on her jacket. She smiled and held out her hands for him to see. The injuries were gone much to his surprise. To her surprise, he dropped the pencil in his hand and took her hand within his to inspect the healed skin. Her hand tingled as he ran his warm fingers over the chilled skin. The look on his face was sheer awe, as if he had never been around magic before or seen it happen in front of him. Was that what was holding him back and keeping him so distant?
Lots of humans hated Others on contact, merely because they were afraid of them. Terra hadn't looked like he was afraid of her, but maybe she was just reading his reactions to her the wrong way. It was possibly they both assumed the worst of one another. Aqua's smile became a tad sheepish. You know what they say about assumptions… And it seems she had fallen right along into that category.
"Iron burns are pretty easy to heal with a little bit of magic."
"But it was just water."
"And I use water magic." She explained.
She was tempted to show off a little bit, but restrained herself. He was apparently still getting used to the fact that yes, indeed, his partner wasn't human. It was probably a lot to take in. She knew she would have been a little shocked if her partner healed himself with just water (if it weren’t already a common occurrence for Aqua). It wasn't the time or the place to start acting like a child at a talent show. Besides, it's not like his praise meant anything to her.
"Show me?"
At least, until she got that request.
